24、Dear Victor,
I have received your loving letter from school and I am glad to know that you are becoming responsible(有责任的) enough to decide on your career(职业).
You are now in the final year of high school and are going to start further education in college. You know that we belong to different times, and my social life is different from yours. However, all I can say as advice is that you must choose a career wisely. The first consideration is your interest. You can only succeed and feel happy when you do something you enjoy. You must get a job which not only provides you with something useful, but also you are pleased with. Then, you must read a lot in the field(领域) you are aiming at. Also, you should get to know the men and women who work in that field, when mind and heart work together, success is inevitable.
No career is more or less important. I think your interest may be in the field of making TV programmes. Your good communication skills, your taking an active part in school plays and the prizes you have won in speech competitions all lead you to that direction. So a career in Mass Communication and TV film production will bring luck to you. If you succeed in that field, you will become famous and rich.
Think a thousand times before making any final decision about your career. After all, we want you to be a man of success.
We all know that you are old enough to think for yourself.
With all the best wishes !
Your loving father

At the horse fair there was a man with a gentle voice and kind grey eyes. He offered twenty-three pounds for me, but they refused, and he walked away. Then a man with a very loud voice came. I was afraid he was going to buy me, but he walked off. Then the grey-eyed man came back again and said, “I will give twenty-four for him.”
“Done,” said the salesman. “He’s a quality horse and if you want him for cab work, he’s a bargain.”
Half an hour later we set off for London along country roads, until we came to that great city. There were streets to the right, and streets to the left. We went into one of the small streets, and then into a very narrow street, with small, old houses on one side, and stables on the other.
My new owner stopped at a house and whistled. The door opened, and a young woman, a little girl and boy, came out They all looked at me. “Is he gentle, father?” “Yes, Dolly, as gentle as a kitten; you can pat him.”
Dolly, the little girl, patted my shoulder without fear. It felt good! They led me into a comfortable, clean stable, with plenty of dry straw, and after a delicious me all lay down to sleep.

Her cat was ill, but it was not serious enough to take it to the vet. She also thought the illness was so little that it was not easy to describe to the vet, but still she worried. I finally said to her, “You must do something.” “But there’s nothing to do, ” Anna said. “Call the vet and talk to him, ” I said.“That doesn’t make sense because the vet won’t know anything from what I tell, and he may ask me to take my cat to see him, and I know it’s not that serious, ” she said. “Yes, I understand, ” I said. “But you need to do that for you, not for the cat. By not doing anything you are worrying yourself. ” “Okay, ” she said. “I see what you mean, ” When she called, the vet quickly found the problem. He told her to bring the cat in. And if he was right about the cat, he could treat it right away.

28、任务型阅读
阅读下列短文,根据短文信息完成文后表格,每空一词。
Making a public speech is the thing that most people don’t want to do. The reason is that we are all afraid of making mistakes in front of others. The more important the speech is, the more frightened we will be. But forget it now. Public speaking is easy. It’s just a simple talking, Although I’m a shy man, I’ve been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more than 30 years. Anybody who can talk can speak in public. Here are some of the lessons I have learned:
Keep your speech simple. Your audience can’t take all of your main ideas, and they can only remember one or two of them, not ten or twenty. So you should prepare one or two of your main ideas very well. But if you can’t express what you want to say, then your speech will not be paid attention to. And if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to say, your audience won’t, either.
Organize your speech well. No matter how long or short your speech is, you have to organize your speech—how you are going to open or begin, what main points you want to make and how you’re going to close or end. A strong close is usually very important and critical(关键的): the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember. If not, they will be confused.
Keep your speech not long. The standard length of a speech is usually 12 minutes. Most people can’t put their minds in one thing for too long time, which will make them tired and lose their interest. If you pay no attention to your audience’s reaction(反应),the audience will get bored. Of course, your speech will fail.
Following these suggestions above, you can make a good speech in public, and you will be an excellent speaker, I think.
Title: How to make a 【1】 speech | ||
Technique | Reasons | Requirements |
