  • 24、John Bramblitt is an artist who learned to see through his paintbrush. He got blind at the age of 30 because of epilepsy (癫痫). He had never even painted before that, but now his works are talked about around the world, and his experience is encouraging millions.

"When I first lost my sight I was really angry. I couldn't leave my-home by my own. I couldn't read, I couldn't write anymore," he said. Losing his sight was a turning point in his life. He calls it "the deepest, darkest hole." But he finally climbed out of that hole by picking up the paint brush.

During the course of painting, he realized that every shade of colour has its own special textures(质地). He found out how to mix colours by feeling the differences between textures in the oils. Through just his touch, he can see his subjects.

"Different colours of paint feels different. White is very- thick and black is runny like oil. So if I want gray, it's halfway in between. I can mix the white and the gray until the texture feels a little bit thick and a little bit runny."

He has never seen his own wife or his young son, but it is clear that he knows exactly what they look like. Bramblitt's art is popular around the world. He can often be found in museums or at schools, teaching what he has learned about life and colour to children.

  • 27、Not every exploration in history is successful. An explorer will sometimes leave on a journey and never be heard from again. The mystery remains, and the world is left wondering just what may have happened to him or her. The following are some of the names we should remember.

Amelia Earhardt was one of the most recognizable (容易认出的) faces in America. She was a university teacher and writer, but she became famous after setting records for flying across America and the Atlantic Ocean by herself. In 1937, Earhardt was attempting to fly right around the world. With only 7, 000 kilometres left to travel, her plane disappeared over the Pacific Ocean. Even the most expensive search and rescue mission in US history could not find her or the plane. Percy Fawcett was a British who loved exploring jungles. Like many other explorers of the1920s, he believed that there were lost, ancient cities with great treasures to be found. Fawcett was certain there was an ancient city of gold “the lost city of Z”, hiding in Brazil. In 1925, he went into the Brazilian jungle with his son and one of his friends. The group never returned. The widespread belief is that Indians in the jungle killed the men because they were passing through their private land. Others think the men decided to spend their lives living in the jungle.

Born in Guangdong province in 1925, Peng Jiamu was a Chinese biologist and explorer. Already a famous scientist, Peng gave up his chance to study abroad in 1956 when he was given chance to explore the Lop Nor desert in1980, he led team of explorers into this desert again. He disappeared outside of the team’s camp, after leaving a note saying that he was going to find water. The bones of six bodies were found between 2005 and 2007, but none belonged to Peng. There are many other theories about what happened to these lost explorers, but they are just guesses. Anyway, these people will always be remembered for their heroic explorations.

【1】What did explorers once believe about the jungles?

A.They were good places to make homes.

B.They were too dangerous to be fully explored.

C.Lost cities of treasures were hiding there.

    D.Many different animals lived there.

【2】Why did Fawcett go into the Brazilian jungle?

A.Because he was interested in the culture of Indians in the jungle.

B.Because he wanted to build a city in the jungle.

C.Because he would like to spend his life living in the jungle.

D.Because he wanted to find “the lost city of Z”.

【3】What did Peng give up in 1956 to explore the Lop Nor desert?

    A.The chance to study abroad.

    B.His chance to start family.

C.A position at a top American university.

D.His plans to move to the UK.

【4】Which of the following is true according to the article?

A.Peng Jiamu led a team to explore the Lop Nor desert in 1980.

B.Peng Jiamu disappeared inside the team’s camp.

C.Peng Jiamu left a note saying that he was going to find food.

D.Peng Jiamu’s bones were finally found.
