24、Father’s Day has a very short history. It was started because there was a Mother’s Day, and just because some Americans thought that if we had a Mother’s Day, we should also have a Father’s Day. Father’s Day has become important in North America. And shopkeepers(店主)found it was a good way to get people to buy presents for their fathers, presents from their shops.
By the way, very few countries have a Father’s Day, though some have children’s Day, or a special day for boys and another for girls. More and more countries are having Mother’s Day, so maybe Father’s Day will also become popular before too long. Now, what do people in North America do on Father’s Day? The newspapers, radios, and TV tell children what they should do-buy a Father’s Day present for your father. They even tell a wife to buy a Father’s Day present-not for her father but for her husband, even if he is a not yet a father. 25、Dear Matt,
I'm a volunteer at our local animal rescue center . Recently, I've been wanting to adopt a dog that I really like, but my parents won't allow me to. They think keeping a pet is a waste of time . How can I make my parents agree with me ?
Kate
Dear Kate,
It's great that you're volunteering at an animal rescue center! You're already showing your love and responsibility for animals. However, I can understand why your parents don't agree to bring a dog into their home . I'm sure they've already told you that caring for a pet is a huge responsibility.
One of your first jobs as a new dog owner would be to potty train it . It will take time and patience to teach your dog to do its business outside. You can research this topic and prepare a plan to show to your parents that you've given it a lot of thought and are ready .
You're a student, which means that you're going to be in school most of the time. Who will take care of your dog then ? Will your parents have to take on that responsibility ? What's more , A ? It will need dog food , toys —and most expensive of all —visits to the hospital for checkups and medicine. For example, my mom's dog has seizures so he needs to take medicine and eat a special type of food. Neither of these is cheap.
Most dogs need to be walked frequently. This is very time-consuming, but you must do it for your dog's physical and mental health. Another thing to think about: Dogs love to bite things. My mom's dog will gladly make a meal out of any books, paper or even wooden furniture in the house. As long as you understand the never-ending responsibilities of being a dog owner and communicate this with your parents, you might have a chance! Good luck.
Matt

26、Look at the pictures. Can you guess what they are used for? Are they toys? Well, if you think so, think again. These cute “rabbits” are actually huabobo. It has been a popular traditional food in Shandong Province for more than 300 years.
Usually, huabobo is four or even six times bigger than mantou. It has become a necessary part of some important events. Local women use tools like knives, scissors and pens to shape the dough (生而团) into ducks, dragons, peaches, etc, before having them steamed. Then they color them. Their bright and beautiful colors are generally considered to express good wishes.
For example, huabobo in the shapes of rabbits and tigers is usually given to children to express the wish that a boy will be as strong as a tiger and a girl as lovely and clever as a white rabbit. And huabobo in the shape of man darin duck (鸳鸯) represents the wish that a newly-married couple will live happily together to an old age.
Huabobo is normally sweet in taste. The way to make huabobo has been passed down from generation to generation in Shandong Province.
Huabobo tastes good, but most huabobo shops only serve it locally. That detail caught the attention of Zang Chaiyuan, a 25-year-old girl from Yantai. She wanted to introduce huabobo to more people.
Zang’s love for huabobo has also led her to create new shapes. She also uses natural fruit and vegetable juice to color huabobo. What’s more, she has found a way to store huabobo for over two months, making it more convenient to send it to other cities.

27、Salted fish is a common food that is popular in the south of China. It is chewy (有嚼劲的) and adds a salty taste to other dishes. But eating too much salted fish can give you cancer (癌症), according to a list of cancer-causing foods that was recently published by the China Food and Drug Administration.
Salted fish is produced with a large amount of salt, which later turns into nitrites (亚硝酸盐).When nitrites reach our stomach, they turn into another kind of chemical (化学物质) that can cause cancer, Huang Yufang from the Cancer Center of Guangzhou Medical University told Xinhua News Agency.
So does this mean we can’t eat salted fish anymore?
“People don’t need to worry too much. It has to do with how often you eat certain foods and how much of them you eat,” Huang said. If you really like eating salted fish, you can eat a small amount once or twice a month. At the same time, you should also eat more fruit and vegetables that are rich in vitamin C, as this can help to prevent the formation (形成) of nitrites.
In fact, there are many foods we often eat that are thought to cause cancer, such as pickles (咸菜), areca palm (槟榔), certain fried foods and even red meat, such as pork, lamb and beef.
Although these foods can possibly cause cancer, it doesn’t mean a person will get cancer just from eating them, according to the World Health Organization.
Cancer is caused by many different factors, such as one’s genes (基因), environment, lifestyle and eating habits. As long as one has a balanced diet, one doesn’t need to avoid cancer-causing foods totally, Fang Yu, a doctor from the Beijing Cancer Hospital, told People’s Daily.
