  • 25、   A few days ago, my pet dog died. But before you feel too sorry for me or my dog, you should know that Matty-we named her after the famous baseball player Christy “Matty”. Mathewson-was about 17 years old. She lived a long, happy life before she got so sick that we had to put her to sleep.

I have to say that when we first saw Matty, I did not want a pet. But Matty turned out(结果是) to be a wonderful dog. Matty was a big part of our family life for years.

That’s a good lesson. Sometimes things don’t turn out the way you thought they would. They turn out better. See if this sounds familiar to you. You join a sports team. After some practice or games, you find you don’t like the team as much as you thought you would. Maybe you don’t like the coach or the other kids. Or perhaps you find out you’re not going to be the next LeBron James or Mia Hamm. You want to give up, but your mum and dad say you have to at least finish the season. You don’t want to, but you stay with the team. And, surprise: Things get better. You make a friend or make a few good plays. Maybe the coach tells you you’re going to be a good player.

Most kids and adults (成年人) are pretty sure they know exactly what they want. For example, I was positive years ago that I didn’t want a dog. But life is full of surprises. We change with time. That’s why it’s important for us to try new foods, new hobbies and new sports.

    1Mia Hamm is probably an)________.

    A.movie star B.sports star C.animal doctor D.school teacher

2The underlined word “positive” in the last paragraph means “________” in Chinese.

    A.sorry B.lucky C.disappointed D.certain

3Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Matty was an important part of the writer’s family.

B.The writer didn’t want Matty when he first saw her.

C.The writer learned a lesson from his pet dog.

D.Most kids know exactly what they are good at.

4By telling the story of his dog, the writer wants us to________.

    A.have a pet B.try new things C.join a sports team D.care our pet

  • 27、Some people have a kind of magic. They will make you comfortable while they are around. You feel at ease while talking to them. How is it done? Here are several skills that good talkers have. If you follow the skills, they’ll help people feel relaxed and make friends with them quickly.

First of all, good talkers ask questions. Almost anyone, no matter how shy he is, will answer a question. One well-known businesswoman says,“ At business lunches, I always ask people what they did that morning. It’s a common question, but it will get things going.” From there you can move on to other matters—sometimes to really personal questions. And how he answers will let you know how far you can go.

Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen to the answers. This point seems clear, but it isn’t. Your questions should have a point and help to tell what kind of person you are talking to. And to find out, you really have to listen carefully and attentively. Real listening at least means some things. First it means not to change the topic of conversation. If someone insists on one topic, it means he’s really interested in it. Real listening also means not just listening to words, but to the voice. If the voice sounds bored, then, it’s time for you to change the topic.

Finally, good talkers know well how to deal with the moment of saying good-bye. If you’re saying it, you may give him a handshake and say,“ I’ve really enjoyed meeting you.” If you want to see that person again, don’t keep it a secret. Let people know your thoughts.

1Asking questions might be a quite good and suitable way   .

    A. to make more and more new friends.

    B. to begin your business talks

    C. to get things going

    D. to make a deep and lasting impression on others

2After asking somebody a question, it’ll be polite of you to   .

    A. agree with what others say all the time

    B. listen to his reply attentively

    C. change the topic

    D. go on asking him more questions

3Generally speaking, good talkers are persons who   .

    A. are good at answering questions

    B. never talk too much or too little

    C. always speak in a gentle way

    D. know when they should change the topic of the talk

4If you really want to meet someone again,   .

    A. you may take him as your lifelong true friend

    B. it seems necessary for you to let him know it

    C. it’s proper for you to give him a second handshake

    D. it’ll be helpful for you to have further understanding of him

Worrying about the future is a _______ part of life. From time to time, everyone wonders what would happen if something doesn’t go to plan: “What if I make a mistake?” or “What if everyone _______ me?” These “what-if” worries focus on a negative result. Spending a lot of time thinking about “what-if” makes you feel anxious(焦虑的)and worried. For example, you might feel upset and it can make it hard to focus on what you’ re doing.
