21、Smoking for Life
In Europe, over 215 million people smoke every day. It is a bad thing. Everyone knows they shouldn't smoke because smoking is really bad for the health. So why do people do it? The truth is that nearly 95% of adult(成年人) smokers started when they were teenagers(青少年). People don't usually start smoking after the age of 20. But because smoking is very addictive(使人上瘾的), it's hard to stop after you start. So if you start smoking as a teenager, you'll find it difficult to give up as an adult. And almost every adult who smokes wishes they had never started.
Although people know about the dangers of smoking, psychologists(心理学家) and parents still can't find a way to .stop teenagers doing it. In the United States, about 3,000 teenagers try their first cigarette every day. That's one million new teenage smokers every year.
Teenagers understand that smoking is bad for them but just don't use their common sense. Many teenagers believe that smoking makes them "cool" and "adult(成熟的) ". Some do it just because their friends are doing it.
"Unfortunately(不幸的), when an adult sees you smoking, it's like wearing a big 'I'm a Stupid Teenager' sign(符号.指示牌) around your neck," says Marshall Brain in his book, A Teenager's Guide to the Real World. "Adults don't decide to start smoking. If you start smoking as a teenager, you'll have a habit that i.s dirty, expensive, unhealthy and unwanted for the rest of your life. "
The good news is that the number of teens who smoke is falling. I am very happy about it. Today, in the US, only about 22% of teenagers smoke, down from 36% just 7 years ago. I hope the number will continue to fall.
