Making a stand for what is right

What do you know about the past system of segregation（种族隔离）in the US? What do you think of it?

There was a very strict system（制度）of segregation in Atlanta, US. As a black child, I couldn’t go to some public parks and schools, because they were white-only. In many of the stores in my city, I couldn’t go in to buy a hamburger or a cup of coffee.

In my childhood, two things happened that had a big influence on me. The first was the empty seats that my dad and I sat on one day in the front of a shoe store. A young white man who worked at the store came up and said, “I’ll be happy to wait on you if you’ll just move to those seats in the back.”

My dad replied, “There’s nothing wrong with these seats. We’re comfortable here.”

“Sorry,” the man said, “but you’ll have to move.”
