四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Noah Webster was born on October 16, 1758, in the West Division of Hartford.

Few people went to college at that time, but Noah loved to learn so much that his parents let him go to Yale, Connecticut’s only college. Noah graduated(毕业) in 1778.

Noah did not like American schools. Sometimes 70 children of all ages were crammed(挤满)into one-room schoolhouses with poor books and untrained(未受训练的)teachers. Their books came from England. Noah thought that Americans should learn from American books. So in 1783, Noah wrote his own textbook A Grammatical Institute of the English Language. Most people called it the “Blue Backed Speller” because of its blue cover.

When Noah was 43, he started writing the first American dictionary(词典). He did that because Americans in different parts of the country spelled, pronounced and used words differently. He thought that all Americans should speak in the same way. He also thought that Americans should not speak and spell just like the English. Noah used American spellings like color instead of the English colour and music instead of musick. He also added American words that weren’t in English dictionaries like skunk and squash. He spent over 27 years writing his dictionary. When Noah completed his dictionary in 1828, the first American dictionary came out.

When Noah Webster died in 1843, he was thought to be an American hero.

  • 25、When a consumer finds that an item she or he bought is faulty or in some other way does not live up to the manufacturer’s claims, the first step is to present the warranty, or any other records which might help, at the store of purchase. In most cases, this action will produce results. However, if it does not, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction. A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the “high up” his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer’s favor, assuming he or she has a just claim.

Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they can’t get to the place of purchase, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter.

Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer can demonstrate what is wrong with the item in question. If this can’t be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example, “The left speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear" is better than "This stereo does not work.” The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the manufacturer. If so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and firmly as possible. If a polite complaint does not achieve the desired result, the consumer can go to a step further. She or he can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a private or public organization responsible for protecting consumers’ rights.

【1】When a consumer finds that his or her item has fault in it, the first thing he or she should do is to ________.

    A.complain personally to the manager

B.threaten to take the matter to court

C.write a firm letter of complaint to the store of purchase

D.show some written proof of the purchase to the store

A.Explain exactly what is wrong with the item.

B.Threaten to take the seller to court.

C.Make polite and general statements about the problem.

D.Avoid having direct contact with the store manager.

【3】According to the passage, which of the following is suggested as the last alternative that consumers may turn to?

  • 27、American Mark Levine wears many hats in China—educator, writer, volunteer, musician, cross-cultural (跨文化) communicator, Chinese “green card” holder since 2016 and, most noticeably, winner of the Chinese government’s Friendship Award.

Levine has performed hundreds of times in 15 provinces, including on TV, on the Great Wall. He even performed in the 115th birth anniversary of New China’s first premier, Zhou Enlai. Because he lived in Huai’an, Jiangsu province, Zhou’s hometown, when he first came to China in 2005.

The 73-year-old is perhaps best known among the Chinese public for writing American country music-style songs about China. He often sings and plays his guitar to the accompaniment (伴奏) of the erhu played by his friend, Fu Han, in their musical duo (二重奏).

Fu says, “If people can listen to these songs, they will better understand China.” That’s why she helped him record a CD at the end of 2008.

Fu still remembered she first saw Levine playing the guitar in a well-known bar in Beijing’s Houhai area and joined him onstage with her erhu. Many foreigners were interested in the Chinese instrument. That was when Levine moved from Huai’an to Beijing at the beginning of 2008. Then they became band mates.

A few years later, Fu became his agent. And they have been performing as a band named “In Side Out” all over the country. She is glad to see that Levine has written over 70 pieces of music so far.

His latest song, The Future Is Very Bright Ahead Led by the CPC, celebrates the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (中国共产党,缩写CPC).
