二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、I try not to get into the habit of telling my kids they’re smart.

This habit doesn't mean that I think they have low intelligence. It's just because praising their talent can strengthen the idea that natural ability is all that matters.

In a study of Carol Dweck, a Stanford psychologist, kids who were told they were smart were more likely to rely on their intelligence and ignore the importance of effort. They were always keeping up being "smart” rather than trying to learn new skills. However, the kids who were told that they were doing well because they worked hard were more likely to take risks and try increasingly difficult problems. When they made mistakes, they worked hard to learn from them.

So it is not praise that's the problem; it's praise for the wrong thing. If your kids think their rare intelligence is something they're born with, then they will rely on it. When that happens, they expect to “get it" easily and then they don't “work for it". If they fail to develop the habit of hard work by developing their intelligence, then their accomplishments will be severely lessened.

After we realize the importance of using words around work, we must apply the lesson practical must have a bit of a script with our words to retrain ourselves to confirm effort over intelligence.

Every word and action is sending your child a message. Describe the effort, attitude and strategies your child is using, not just the achievement. Using this "descriptive praise” gives children daily appreciation and approval. You can add negative comments to praise. The magic ratio is five positive comments for every negative.

【1】The passage is possibly written for ____.

    A.teenagers

    B.teachers

    C.parents

    D.researchers

【2】What does the underlined word "that" in paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.Praising children.

    B.Children's intelligence

    C.Depending on intelligence

    D.Developing a good habit.

【3】What is the best tile for the passage?

    A.Stop Praising Your Children!

    B.How to Praise Your Children

    C.My Ways to Raise Children

    D.Descriptive Praise

  • 27、 Technology is making life easier for some dairy farmers. They use robotic systems to milk their cows. These systems are designed to reduce labor and increase milk production.

Cows are trained to follow a series of paths that lead to the milking stations. Only one cow at a time can enter the station. Once insidethe cow is rewarded with food. As the cow eatsa robotic arm cleans and connects the animal to the milking machine. A few minutes laterthe milking is completed. The gate is lifted. The cow leaves and the next cow enters. The robotic systems are designed to operate twenty four hours a day. Cows are milked on average about three times a day. Some are milked four to six times a day. The cows wear collars(颈圈) around their necks that identify them to the system. A computer keeps records on their eating and milking. A cow is released from the station if the computer decides it should not be milked. The system also measures the temperature and color of the freshly produced milk. Milk is thrown away if it does not pass the tests. Cows need two to four weeks to learn to use the robotic milking systems. Once trainedthe cows no longer require human assistanceunless something goes wrong.

Professor Plaut heads the Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University. She believes the systems will attract especially the next generation of farmers who are more interested in technology and less interested in working all the time on the farm. Stillshe says the price of robotic milking systems will continue to limit their use. Doug Suhr has more than one hundred milking cows on his farm. Last year it became the fourth farm in southeast Minnesota to get a robotic milking system. A recent story in a local agricultural newspaper said the first robot cost $175000 and the second cost $150000.Doug says the increase in milk production reaches a high of more than 6kg per cow per day.

1Under robotic milking systems______ decide(s) whether a cow is suitable to be milked.

Athe robotic arms Bthe dairy farmers

    Cthe cows themselves Da computer

2When is human assistance needed during the milking?

AWhen the cows enter the milking station every morning.

BWhen a robotic arm connects a cow to the milking machine.

CWhen the cows are trained to use the robotic milking system in the first two to four weeks.

DWhen the temperature and color of the freshly produced milk are measured.

3Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the last paragraph?

ASince Doug got the robotic milking systemmilk production on his farm has increased.

BThe price of milking machines decreases $25000 every year.

CDoug has the largest farm in southeast Minnesota.

DThere are four farms in southeast Minnesota that have robotic milking systems so far.

4It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

Athe price of robotic milking systems will greatly decrease

Brobotic milking systems are still too expensive to be popular

Cmost farmers are too old to use robotic milking systems

Drobotic milking systems don't need to work at night

  • 28、This has been a year full of natural disasters, like hurricanes, wildfires and floods. Behind many of them, though, is an unfolding event that shows no sign of stopping: climate change. Here we meet some students who have been using science to help people deal with the effects of the changing climate. Their research places them among 30 finalists at the 10th Broadcom MASTERS, a research program open to middle-school investigators.

Ryan Honary, a 12-year-old student in California, has personal experience with wildfires. One day, he was with his father at a tennis tournament when he saw wildfires raging across his home state on TV. “I called my mom and asked if she was okay.” Ryan recalls. Once he knew that she was, he asked his dad why wildfires got out of control so often. “We’re planning to send people to Mars but we can’t detect wildfires,” Ryan says.

That’s when Ryan decided to create a way to detect wildfires early — before they get out of control. He linked together a series of mini computers that had sensors to detect smoke. When smoke was detected, data was transferred wirelessly to another computer, which served as a mini meteorological(气象的) station.

Ryan brought his entire system to a park and tested it by holding the flame from a lighter in front of each sensor. When they sensed a fire, they informed the detector. It then alerted an app that Ryan built for his phone. While creating that app, Ryan talked with Mohammed Kachuee, a graduate student at the University of California. He helped Ryan use machine learning to train his app with data from 2018 Camp Fire, the most destructive fire in California history. The app took lessons from how this fire had traveled over time. Using those data, the app “learned” to tell how flames at future events might spread.

Someday, Ryan hopes his sensors might be used throughout his state. “Five of the worst fires in California just happened in the last three months,” he notes.

【1】What is the function of the app Ryan built for his phone?

    A.To transfer data about campfires.

    B.To detect smoke from wildfires.

C.To predict how a fire might spread.

D.To show how we can prevent a fire.

【2】Which of the following best describes Ryan?

    A.Caring and creative.

    B.Brave and optimistic.

    C.Ambitious and demanding.

    D.Hardworking and intelligent.

【3】What is the text mainly about?

    A.The effects of changing climate.

    B.A boy’s experience with wildfires.

C.A research program open to students.

D.A student’s scientific research on wildfires.

  • 29、Bad news for people who frequently use the emoji(表情符号): It is no longer cool.

In recent weeks, two generations have been debating in videos and comments on Tik Tok over the symbols of millennial(千禧一代) culture that are now considered uncool by Generation z (born after 1996). The symbols include the popular laughing crying emoji that some millennials (born in the 1980s), including me, use hundreds of times a day, or more.

“Face with Tears of Joy”, the official name for the laughing crying emoji, is currently the most-used emoji on Emojitracker, a website that shows real-time emoji use on Twitter.

“What’s wrong with the laughing crying emoji?” one user asked in a Tik Tok comment. Another responded, “It’s so off.” In a different video, a woman says she’s cut back on using it after learning kids don’t.

“I use everything but the laughing crying emoji,” 21-year-old Walid Mohammed told CNN Business. “I stopped using it recently because I saw older people using it, like my mom, my older sisters and just older people in general.”

For many Generation Zers, the emoji has become a popular replacement for conveying laughter. It’s the visual version of the slang phrase “I’m dead” or “I’m dying”, which means something is very funny. Other acceptable choices—the emoji officially called “Loudly Crying Face”, or just writing “lol” (laughing out loud) or “lmao”.

“Tears of Joy was a victim of its own success,” said Gretchen McCulloch, the author of “Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language”. “If you express digital laughter for years and years in the same way, it starts to feel insincere... It gets worn out through continued use,” she said. That’s why Generation Zers may be looking to fresh and novel ways to signal they’re laughing in different ways.

“Older generations tend to use emojis literally while younger people get more creative,” said Jeremy Burge, the chief emoji officer of Emojipedia, an emoji dictionary website. Generation Zers told CNN Business they like to assign their own meanings to emoji, which then spreads to others, often through social media.

【1】What is the author’s attitude to the use of the laughing crying emoji?

    A.Curious.

    B.Favourable.

    C.Uncaring.

    D.Impatient.

【2】What message does the author try to deliver by giving some examples of Generation Zers?

A.They are fond of using emojis.

    B.They use emojis very scientifically.

C.The Loudly Crying Face emoji is very popular.

D.The laughing crying emoji is losing its charm.

【3】What can we infer about 21-year old Walid Mohammed?

A.He wants to set himself apart from older people.

B.He is seeking to be perfect.

C.He is unwilling to accept something new.

D.He sticks to his own idea.

【4】What’s the problem with “Tears of Joy” according to Gretchen McCulloch?

    A.It isn’t funny enough.

    B.It isn’t creative enough.

C.It has been used too much.

    D.It hasn’t received much attention.
