二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Famous Irish poet Oscar Wilde(1854-1900) once wrote: “Ah! Realize your youth while you have it.” He pointed out the important truth about how precious youth is in one’s journey through life.

However, the popular internet slang word foxi or “Buddhist” is challenging this norm by encouraging young people to remain calm and peaceful and avoid conflict as much as possible.

The phrase was reportedly created in Japan in 2014 to describe young men who no longer bother to start relationships with women or follow someone else’s life path. They prefer to stay in their own peaceful world without being disturbed and care little about passion and success.

Now, Chinese internet users are pairing the phrase with other words to describe a similar mindset. For example, “Buddhist students” are those who study just the right amount—they don’t cut class, but they don’t burn the midnight oil, either. There are also “Buddhist parents”, who interfere little with their children’s lives and let them develop however they like—the opposite of “helicopter parents”.

In this fast-changing and competitive world, it’s only natural that people are seeking a spiritual anchor(支柱).

However, some would compare foxi with “demotivation culture”—a phrase that describes young people who feel aimless and powerless. They say that foxi actually reflects the reality that young people are losing their will to fight. They are pretending to keep a healthy and wise attitude toward failure simply because they’re incapable of succeeding.

But no matter what, there is one thing that “Buddhist youngsters” should keep in mind: You may want to keep a calm mindset regarding failure, but you should also be passionate and positive about school, work and life.

After all, Wilde also wrote: “Live the wonderful life that is in you! Let nothing be lost upon you. Be always searching for new excitements. Be afraid of nothing.

1The author begins with the poet Oscar’s words to ______.

    A. bring in the main topic

    B. stress the importance of youth

    C. advise readers to enjoy youth

    D. introduce a famous poet to readers

2What may be the behavior of “helicopter parents”?

    A. They give few suggestions to their children.

    B. They interfere their children’s life as they like.

    C. They hope their children can do what they are into.

    D. They don’t push their children to burn the midnight oil.

3Why does the author refer to “demotivation culture” in the sixth paragraph?

    A. He simply wants to compare it with Buddhist.

    B. He likes foxi better than demotivation culture.

    C. He wishes young people to know more about it.

    D. He indicates the negative effect of foxi on young people.

4What advice does the author give to “Buddhist youngsters”?

    A. They should confront life positively.

    B. They should be a true Buddhist person.

    C. They should keep calm in face of failure.

    D. They should be full of passion about everything.

  • 22、   Stop wasting your time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.

The seeds and the power to grow them are contained in the human mind. Success is a choice but not a chance. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.

You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem (自尊心).Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for whatever happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident while successful people realize that they are responsible.

Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we consciously choose to accept and believe. Thoughts and beliefs cause behavior. Our attitudes and actions are a result of habits rooted in us over a period of time. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success depends upon our level of confidence.

If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks.

In short, in all areas of your life, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.

1Which could be a good title for the passage?

A.Cause and Effect. B.No pain, no gain.

C.Success is a choice. D.Failure is the mother of success.

2We can learn from the passage that _____.

A.You'll succeed as long as you develop your self-esteem

B.Proper control over yourself contributes to building self-esteem

C.Associating with negative people is likely to bring success

    D.Success sometimes isn't a choice but a chance

3Which of the following is NOT a "cause and effect"?

A.One's habits, attitudes and his actions.

B.One's thoughts, beliefs and his behavior.

    C.One's confidence and his success.

    D.One's expectations and his responsibilities.

  • 23、   Imagine being a business that regularly takes huge quantities of your own products worth millions of pounds and burns them up. Your stock literally goes up in smoke. It sounds crazy, but the practice is common for some of the world's biggest clothing manufacturers .They argue that it is the most cost-effective way of maintaining their brand's exclusivity (独特性).

The clothes that are burned are those that do not sell at a high enough price. Rather than watch them go on sale, the companies would set fire to them and regain a small amount of energy.

Nobody knows exactly how much unsold stock is burnt annually by those fashion houses, but burning clothes has various negative impacts on the environment. For example, burning clothes made from artificial fibers may release plastic microfibers into the atmosphere, which worsens global warming. A U.K. parliamentary committee report on sustainability and the fashion industry advises the government to ban the burning of unsold stock if it can be reused or recycled.

Actually, there are other approaches. What if those companies had a section tasked  with taking back unsold clothes, redesigning them into new products, and shipping out the new products to the market once again?

There is also now an opportunity to focus on biodegradable (可生物降解的)fabrics. Clothes that break down faster might not have to be burned. They would also appeal to those who care about the environmental impact of their own wardrobes.

Additionally, we have an over-production problem. According to the World Bank, while clothing sales have risen steadily since 2000, clothing utilization has fallen at roughly the same rate. For every extra T-shirt that is sold, it will be worn roughly half as much as it would have been 20 years ago. That means better forecasting market trends would in theory result in less waste.

Burning clothes won't happen simply through fashion firms. The scale of fashion production has to change. And it's important to recognize that these consumer-focused brands will only go where the market takes them. If protecting the environment really matters to the public, they have to make clear that they want more sustainable clothing in the first place. Without consumers demanding that, it won't change.

    1Paragraph 3 mainly talks about   .

    A. how important the U.K. parliamentary committee report is

    B. why fashion firms should end burning unsold stock

    C. why fashion firms burn unsold clothes in large numbers every year

    D. how artificial fabrics will contribute to global warming

2The underlined expression "clothing utilization" in the 6th paragraph means .

    A. how long clothing lasts B. how well clothing sells

    C. how often clothing is used D. how clothing is designed

3All the following possible solutions are mentioned in the passage to deal with unsold clothes except

    A. Making consumers feel better about their purchases.

    B. Redesigning and making them into new clothes.

    C. Conducting research on market demand before production.

    D. Making clothes out of environmentally-friendly materials.

4What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A. Burning clothes is a better option for every fashion firm.

    B. Consumers play a key role in stopping burning clothes.

    C. The secret that some fashion firms burn clothes is well kept.

    D. Today's clothes are better than those two decades ago.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.

Brainpower: Use It or Lose It?

Where brainpower is concerned, the old rule of ‘use it, or lose it’ holds true from the start. Babies who receive love and encouragement from their parents develop the neural (神经的)connections they need to get on in life. But what happens to those who fail to get this support?

It would be comforting to believe that such children escape long term damage by being too young to speak, or know any different, but the evidence suggests otherwise.

At a recent meeting of the Royal Society of Medicine, the participants were shown slides taken with a powerful scanner comparing the brains of ‘normal’ three-year-old with those who had been raised in poverty or in orphanages. The work was done by Bruce Perry of the Child Trauma Academy in Houston, Texas. The scans showed that the frontal-temporal areas of the brain, those responsible for personality and enabling a person to display and regulate emotions, showed little activity.

For years it has long been known to scientists that animals brought up in enriched environment have larger and more complex brains than animals that grow up in disadvantaged situations, so experts like Perry assumed that the same would hold true for humans. However, it is only now, thanks to powerful scanners that allow this theory to be put to the test, that the damage is clearly visible. Perry explains the reason for the abnormality is that the brain develops in a ‘use-dependent’ way, growing, organising and working according to experience. With the right stimulation, the brain makes the connections it needs. Without it, synapses (突触), junctions between the neurons used to transport the brain’s messages, actually dissolve. “Negative experiences play a vital role in organising the neural system in the developing brain,” says Perry; in other words, ill-treatment in infancy leads to faulty wiring in the brain.
