24、Can kids do housework? Different people have different ideas. Some people think doing housework makes kids learn useful skills, others think kids are busy doing homework and they must have a good rest. I think doing housework is good for kids.
Whether they’re making their beds, sweeping (扫) the floor, or helping out around the house, doing some housework gives them a feeling of accomplishment (成就). Doing housework also helps kids feel they’re part of the family. Scientists say children doing housework are more independent (独立的) when they grow up.
For preschool (入学前的) children, they can begin to learn how to pick up their things and put away their dishes after a meal. When children begin to go to school, they have to go on with housework. For example, they have to put away their shoes and bags when they get home from school.

25、What keeps us healthy and happy as we go through life? What if we could study people from the time that they were teenagers all the way into old age to find the answer?
The Harvard Study of Adult Development may be the longest study of adult life that has ever been done. Since 1938, we’ve tracked the lives of 724 men, year after year, asking about their work, home lives, health, and other aspects (方面). With good luck and the hard work of several generations of researchers, this study has survived. About 60 of our original 724 men are still alive, still taking part in the study.
The clearest message that we get from this study is: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Over these years, our study has shown that the people who fared(成功) the best were the people who leaned into relationships, with family, with friends, with community.
We’ve learned three big lessons about relationships. First, social connections are really good for us, and loneliness kills. It turns out that people who are more socially connected to others are happier, physically healthier, and live longer than people who are less well connected. Second, the quality of your close relationships matters. Living in the midst of conflict is really bad for our health. Third, good relationships don’t just protect our bodies, but also our brains. When people are in their 80s and in relationships, their memories stay sharper longer. If people in relationships feel they really can’t count on the other one, they experience earlier memory decline (下降).
The answer is clear: The good life is built with good relationships. But it’s not easy to have good relationships. Relationships are messy, complicated (复杂的) and hard work. Building good relationships is also a lifelong task. It never ends.
So why not start working on it right now?
【1】What can we learn about the study?
A.It focused on adult development.
B.Most of the 724 men were born in the 1930s.
C.It was once stopped due to lack of researchers.
D.About 60 researchers have taken part in it.
【2】Which of the following does the study NOT teach us?
A.We should have good social connections.
B.Loneliness helps us live longer and more healthily.
C.We should make sure to have good close relationships.
D.Good relationships are good for our brains.
【3】What happens to people in relationships if they can’t count on the other person?
A.They won’t remember their early relationships.
B.Their memories will stay sharper than others’.
C.They can remember things longer than others.
D.Their memory will decline earlier than others’.
【4】What does the speaker suggest to us?
A.Staying away from messy relationships.
B.Building good relationships with others.
C.Working hard to solve health problems.
D.Trying to live a long and happy life.
