21、 Rushing to work, watching the stock (股票) market drop daily working long into the night on a project, all of these situations can build up stress. Stress in such situations means pressure, conflict, loss of control, and uncertainty. These feelings can lead to a variety of problems. 【1】
What is stress? Stress is your body's physical and psychological response to anything you regard as overpowering. This may be viewed as a result of life's demands, and your lack of resources to meet them. 【2】 This additional energy cannot be destroyed. If not used, it creates an imbalance within your system. Somehow the energy must be channeled into responses to regain a balance.
【3】 Without some stress you would lose your energy for living. You will do well on certain amounts; but too much or too little stress will limit your effectiveness. Ideally, you find your best level of stress---the balance at which you are most motivated.
【4】 It can make you spend your efforts on not being unhappy, rather than on being happy. You can become negatively influenced in your attitudes and feelings about your life more easily.
In addition, medical research estimates as much as 90 percent of illness and disease is Stress-related. 【5】 High blood pressure and heart disease have been linked to stress factors. Most health professionals agree stress can be a contributing factor in making existing medical problems worse.

22、March 3 is World Wildlife Day, an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful diversity of plants and animals on earth. This day also marks the 50th anniversary of an international agreement between governments to ensure the trading of wild animals and plants—which is estimated to be worth billions of US dollars globally—doesn’t threaten species’ survival.
The voluntary deal, called the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora(CITES), provides varying degrees of protection to more than 37,000 species globally. The text of the convention was agreed at a meeting on March 3,1973 and it came into force in 1975. It provides a framework for 184 participants to ensure sustain-able trading of wild species for products such as food, fur and medicines.
“Without CITES, we’d lack a vital mechanism to turn off the ever-flowing and sorrowful deal of species driven by market demand,” said Abigail Entwistle at conservation charity in a press release.
The mountain gorilla is one species benefiting from a total trade ban under CITES in partner ship with this charity. Since this began, the population size has risen fourfold to more than 1,000 individuals. The pygmy hippos(侏儒河马)are also protected by CITES. They are found in the forests and swamps of West Africa, with most living in Liberia. Recently, conservationists have confirmed that pygmy hippos have a wider distribution than previously thought.
Grenadines pink rhino iguana(犀牛鬣蜥)is a striking species, which is threatened by hunting, because it still lacks CITES protection. Since 2016, the charity has been working with local and international partners to protect this species. The important point is that it works. The charity says“a CITES listing would be the logical next step”to better protect its survival.

23、Many of us have reached in our pockets, feeling a vibration (振动), wrongly believing our mobile phones have just rung. The phenomenon even has a name: 'phantom vibration syndrome' -and found it is surprisingly common.
Now scientists believe that we are so alert(警觉) for phone calls and messages we are misinterpreting slight muscle spasms (痉挛) as proof of a call. Robert Rosenberger, an assistant professor at the Georgia Tech Institute of Technology has studied the delusional calls. He said sufferers describe a vague tingling feeling which they think is their mobile phone indicating it has received a text message or call while on ‘silent’. But when the device is retrieved, there was no one on the other end.
Dr. Rosenberger said "I find so many people say, ‘This happens to me, but I thought I was the only one. I thought I was odd. "It seems that the syndrome particularly affects people at the beck and call of mobile phones or pagers. A 2010 study by Michael Rothberg and colleagues found that nearly 70 per cent of doctors at a hospital in Massachusetts suffered phantom vibrations. A more recent study of US college students found the figure was as high as 90 per cent.
While the odd feeling is widespread, it does not seem to be considered a grave problem. Dr. Rosenberger said: "it's not actually a syndrome in a technical sense. That's just the name that's got stuck to it." He added: "Only 2 per cent of people consider it a problem.”
While widespread, the scientific community has not yet invested much effort in getting to the bottom of why we suffer phantom calls.
Dr. Rosenberger said: "People are guessing it has something to do with nervous energy. The cognitive (认知的) scientists are talking about brain chemistry, cognitive pathways changing. But it's not like they have brain scans to go on." He said: "We have a phone call in our pocket all the time and it becomes sort of an extension of ourselves. We have this sort of readiness to experience a call. We feel something and we think, OK, that could be a call.”
【1】Why do some people mistake slight muscle spasms for a call?

24、Are we in the middle of a workplace revolution?
Pool tables, nap-pods and free food. They sound like things at an all-inclusive hoilday resort(度假胜地) rather than in an office. However, digital tech companies have redesigned the office and provided unusual benefits to make the workplace a more pleasant and productive place to be. For these companies, the days of individual work area where people would work on their own for eight hours a day are no more.
This trend is now spreading outside Silicon Valley. Bob Randell, director of MiCareer, says, “Everyone’s realizing that tech companies don’t provide fancy benefits or games areas in order to seem cool and trendy. They want their staff to feel good about themselves and their jobs. Happy employees are less likely to leave to work for a competitor and, most importantly, they are more productive.”
This new kind of workplace also encourages people to cooperate and to be creative. Playing table tennis with league you rarely work with can lead to new ways of working and fresh thinking. Thinking over a problem while lying in a hammock(吊床) might be the best way to find its solution.
However, this doesn’t mean employers should immediately offer free ice cream, replace desks with sofas or let staff bring pets to work. “Firms have to make sure their benefits are of real interest to their employees, and that they can afford them for the long term.' If a company stops offering a benefit, staff happiness goes down and people are less satisfied,” says Anna Tang, head of HR at DigitalFore.
We advise our managers to monitor the effects of the benefits carefully. We now offer free breakfasts instead of free lunches. This persuades people to arrive early and to start work with good energy levels, which makes them more productive. Large free lunches just made them feel sleepy.
This revolution in the workplace is unlikely to slow down. As Randell says, “All businesses can improve by increasing creativity, cooperation and happiness at work. The most successful ones do exactly that, and which companies don't want to be successful?”
