二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Very few people look forward to and enjoy exams. That doesn’t have to mean that you should be afraid of them, though. The following tips will help you get through that terrible exam period.

Here are eight steps to help you during exams:

    1. Make sure you know how much time you will have in the exam, and how many questions there will be. Then you can divide your time among the questions to make sure that they all get answered.

    2. When you’re doing an exam that involves (涉及) long answers, it is a good idea to leave some space at the end of the answer so that you can add any extra comments that might come to mind when you reread your paper.

    3. Don’t spend all of your time only on questions that you know the answer to because you will get a worse mark for answering some questions very well and some not at all.

    4. It is worth taking a little extra time to make sure that your handwriting is neat. Then the examiner will be able to read it! Try to avoid spelling mistakes too!

    5. The more prepared you are, the more likely you are to succeed.

    6. Keep calm. If you feel yourself getting worried, take a deep breath.

    7. Don’t try to discuss the exam after you’ve finished it. If you’ve got different answers from your friends, there’s no point worrying about it.

    8. Once an exam is over, just forget about it. There is nothing more you can do about it. The best thing you can do is to go home and prepare for the next one.

【1】 You can get a better mark if ______.

    A. you spend all of your time on questions that you are not good at

    B. you discuss the answers with your friends after exams

    C. you go over your notes carefully for the exam

    D. you spend most of your time on questions that you know well

【2】 The passage is probably written for ______.

    A. people who mark exam papers

    B. people who take exams

    C. high school teachers

    D. language learners

【3】The underlined word “avoid” in the passage most probably means “______”.

    A. check out

    B. go over

    C. think about

    D. prevent something from happening

  • 27、The pace of today's working life blurs(使模糊) the line between personal time and work time, and it increasingly mixes personal lifestyle and work style. And as companies are trying hard to attract and keep young people for their technical skills and enthusiasm for change, office culture is becoming an extension of youth culture. This may be no bad thing. For most of human history the middle-aged have ruled, but in the future, they will have to share power with fresh-faced youths.

There have been a number of reasons for this change and the most dramatic of these is technology. Children have always been more expert than their parents at something, but usually a game or a fashion, not the century's most important business tool. The Internet has started the first industrial revolution in history to be led by the young. Though there have been youth revolutions before, none of them made a big change the way the Internet has. Throughout the 20th century, if a young person wanted to enter an American company they needed to leave their youth behind. They got a haircut, and probably a suit or at least a tie. Now the same hair, same clothes, even nearly the same hours apply to office and home.

If it had not been for the Internet, this change could not have happened. However, it did not happen because of the Internet only; the corporate restructurings(公司重组) of the 1980s and 90s broke down traditional hierarchies(等级制度). In many companies, seniority-based(基于资历的) hierarchies have been replaced by hierarchies based on performance. The abilities to please your superiors are no longer the most valued skills. Today's employees stay with companies only as long as they feel challenged and rewarded; moving from job to job is now a sign of ambition.

The rise of the young is a good thing because it gives them more opportunity to put their ideas and energy into practice at their most creative stage in life. Nowadays youth and youth qualities seem to dominate, but the experience and maturity of older employees should be put to good use, too.

【1】A company tries to attract young people for their ________.

    A.office culture

    B.modern lifestyle

    C.changing attitude

    D.technical abilities

【2】In the 20th century, to enter an American company, a young person needed to________.

A.work in the office and at home

    B.have an eye-catching hairstyle

    C.dress in the business style

    D.leave the business tool behind

【3】Why is the rise of the young a good thing?

A.They become more energetic in life.

B.They have taken over the companies.

C.Their creativity can be put to good use.

D.Their ideas appeal to a great many people.

【4】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Young people will lead in fashion.

B.Young people will have more power.

C.Older people will step off the historical stage.

D.Older people will continue to be the main force

  • 28、“I really want to, but I can’t because...”

It hurts every time I hear it. I see it for what it is—an excuse. Every one of us has hopes, dreams and goals. We talk about how we will achieve them, but when it’s time to do them, we use that sentence.

When I was a teen girl, I felt stuck. I wanted to learn so many things and achieve my wildest dreams, yet I couldn’t. Living in an underdeveloped country, we suffer from a lack of water, electricity and other resources (资源). And, we don’t have training courses, libraries or clubs, and the Internet is slow.

One day, I decided to create the future I dreamed of. I set my mind on getting the Japanese Monbusho Scholarship (奖学金). I found articles and books online to become fluent in Japanese. In a few months, I was able to hold a simple conversation in Japanese.

I realized that I would need money. I set out to build a hedgehog (刺猬) care website. Every day, after school, I would research hedgehogs and write detailed articles about them. I studied Japanese and wrote about hedgehogs for three years.

I’m sure you’re expecting a happy ending where I travel to Japan and live off my website. That’s not how this story ends. The fact is, I didn’t even get the chance to apply for the scholarship. I failed, Unwilling to accept the facts, I started an online university the next year. And the hedgehog website made me a total of $60.

I can tell you that I tried, but it didn’t work out. It did—just not the way I expected.

I’m not in Japan, but I know how to speak Japanese and have met many interesting people along the way. My hedgehog website didn’t succeed, but I created a new one that s even better with the experience I gained.

I didn’t let my difficulties stand in my way, and I created my own opportunities. Anyone can embrace (欣然接受) the cards they’ve been given and create their own way to make them into a winning hand.

  • 29、No one is sure where and when the expression “apple-pie order” began. It’s said that the housewives of New England liked to cut their apples in pieces. Then they filled pie pans with them in an organised way, row upon row. As one writer said, the women of New England loved to have everything in its place. This perhaps explains why it is generally believed that “apple-pie order” began in New England.

Another old expression, “apple of discord”, comes from ancient myth (神话), however. The myth says that all the gods and goddesses were sitting around the table to celebrate the marriage of Thetis and Peleus. One of the goddesses—Eris was a troublemaker. She threw a golden apple on the table to be given as a prize to the most beautiful goddess. It was not an easy decision to make. How could they choose among Hera, Athena and Aphrodite? Paris was given the task of deciding. He decided to give the golden apple to Aphrodite. Hera and Athena were very angry and threatened him. This, the myth says, began the long Trojan War.

At one time, the tomato was called a love apple. That was a mistake. In the sixteenth century, Spain brought the tomato from South America. Spain then sold the tomato to Morocco. Italian traders carried it on to Italy. The Italian name for the tomato was “pomo di Moro”—apple of the Moors. When French growers brought it in from Italy, they thought “di Moro” meant “d’amour”—the French word for love. And so “pomo di Moro” became the apple of love.

People believe many things about the apple. One belief is that it has great power of keeping people healthy. A very common expression is “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

Another belief is based on fact. The expression is “One rotten apple spoils the barrel.” When an apple begins to go bad, it ruins all the other apples around it in the box. The expression has come to mean that one bad person in a group can cause everyone to act badly.

【1】Which of the following is TRUE about the phrase “apple-pie order”?

    A.It began in New England.

B.Nobody’s sure where and when it began.

C.Everyone is sure where it began.

D.It has been put into use recently.

【2】What’s the meaning of “apple of discord”?

    A.Cause of disagreement.

    B.Situation of danger.

    C.Everything in agreement.

    D.Everything in good order.

【3】What’s the purpose of the third paragraph?

A.To show us a mistaken idea.

B.To tell us a love story about apple.

C.To explain how the tomato was called the apple of love.

D.To show how the tomato was brought in from South America.

【4】Which of the following expressions is about health?

    A.Apple of discord.

    B.Apple-pie order.

C.One rotten apple spoils the barrel.

D.An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
