二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   The lights go down, music plays, and a young woman on a bike at the front of the class encourages students to spin faster and harder. When the lights go back on, the students on the bikes pull out their notebooks, and it's clear that this is not Soul Cycle. Instead, it's a first-of-its-kind business school course at Fordham University that is taught on spin bikes in a university.

“It's the first class that I mention to anybody when anybody asks me what classes I'm taking,” said Amanda Vopat, 22, a business administration major. “I think people are really excited about it.”

The 75-minute, twice-weekly course is the brainchild of Julita Haber, a business school professor at Fordham. “I have been introducing movement and fitness in my classes for the past seven years,” she said. “I found the spin class would really allow students to exercise while a professor lectures at the same time.”

The course the students are taking while cycling is no joke. Managing Professional Relationships is an upper-level business school course taken primarily by juniors and seniors. The students are fully instrumental in each class, selecting the music, leading stretches before and after class and leading the intervals during the class.

Haber stops her lecture every 20 minutes throughout the class. While one student turns off the lights, another student turns up the music and a third student goes to a bike in the front of the class to lead their classmates in high-intensity interval that lasts two to three minutes, just enough to re-energize the students. “It's a wonderful way of engaging students and as a professor, as a teacher, that's really gratifying,” she said. “They don't have their smart phones, and they don't have laptops so they are physically engaged and also mentally engaged in what is being said.”

The course is the first of its kind at Fordham, and Haber believes it is also a first across the United States. She has authored research on the unique classroom approach, which she calls fitness integrated(综合的)learning.

Donna Rapaccioli, the head of Fordham's Gabelli School of Business, described how students were “energized” by the class and said Fordham was open to expanding it to other courses. “Definitely,” Rapaccioli answered when asked if Haber's course represents the future of learning.

  • 27、The men of influence in our lives are our fathers, brothers, grandfathers, uncles, and friends and they play an important role in our lives. They lead by example, teaching us how to move physically through our world, how to be strong in the face of adversity, how to be wise, and how to provide for ourselves and our families.

My dad taught me how to have natural fun, playing baseball in the middle of the street, in his stocking feet. Today my dad continues to influence me in positive ways. He has faced a challenging health problem over the past few months and has carried on with his life in much the same way as he did before his illness, going about his daily business a bit slower and needing to take more rests but still living his life the way he wishes to.

My grandfather taught me the value of being trusted. My father-in-law influenced my life in a different way. He was quiet, loving and a man of power. When he spoke, I listened, as he did not speak unless he had something to say.

My loving husband has encouraged me to be strong and independent, to think for myself, and not to look to him for permission. My husband has also taught me to adapt with him to the ever-changing reality of his journey with illness, and he has met each one with courage and dignity. I have learned much from the men who have had an influence on my life. For all that I have learned and for the role they played and continue to play in my life I am forever thankful.

  • 28、Classical musician Titcomb feels strongly about Symphony No. 2 and its composer, Mahler. “Mahler is just... It’s so remindful. It’s so emotional and maybe it is a cheap thrill, but to me it is a deep emotional work.”

Titcomb played the trombone (长号) professionally for more than thirty years. He says it was a difficult decision to stop playing and to do something else. “When I had to decide to stop my career as a player and move on to just the organizing of an orchestra, it was my heart and soul to play in orchestras and after a 30-year career I think I have done my part and wanted to move aside. Now I’m semi-retired. I only play the trombone in my wife’s rock and roll band, but for 30 years I was a member of the New York City Opera Orchestra and I also played very often with the Metropolitan Opera and various other organizations and the New York City Ballet as well.”

Now Titcomb is the Managing Director for PONY, which hopes to bring new audiences to classical music and aims to make performances higher-tech and more affordable. PONY is composed of many New York’s finest musicians and many of them continue to work in the major companies at Lincoln Center including Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic. And musicians come together shortly after some big events, such as natural disasters.

Mahler Symphony No. 2 music is reflective of a project dear to Titcomb’s heart. Titcomb has worked effortlessly on bringing the Philharmonia Orchestra of New York, which aims to use performances to support disaster relief, and to give people in disaster some inspiration to continue to deal with their troubles. Seeing an orchestra of 90 players on the stage and making music together with a chorus of 200 made him smile.

  • 29、Do you raise fish in your classroom at school? Do you ever have classes while going down a river in a boat? Do you ever throw your school lunch leftovers (剩饭) into a compost bin (肥料箱)?

Probably not. But It’s all part of a normal school day at Barnard Environmental Studies Magnet School in Connecticut, US. The school is known as a “green” school. Being green means “everything in the building is designed with the environment in mind,” said Marjorie Drucker, who teaches at Barnard. For example, the lights go off when people leave the room. Then special windows provide light. It helps cut down on the need for electric lighting.

Saving energy is not all students do. Students found out there were fewer and fewer salmon (鲑鱼) in rivers. They decided to do something to help out --- they raised more salmon. In the classrooms there are big fish containers filled with salmon eggs. When the young salmon have grown, students put them into the river.

Composting is another part of taking care of the environment at Barnard. Students throw the lunch leftovers into a compost bin in a greenhouse. There the food becomes rich soil and can be used to help grow plants.

Most students’ dream jobs are about helping the environment.

“When I grow up I want to be a scientist, because I want to study different kinds of animals.” said Crystal, a girl.

【1】How does the writer start the passage?

    A.By listing reasons.

    B.By giving opinions.

    C.By asking questions.

    D.A night school.

【3】Why did the students raise more salmon in the classrooms?
