  • 26、Smartphones, iPads and computers are keeping children and teenagers awake at night — even when they’re not in use, according to a new research. The researchers say that technology devices (设备) are causing kids to sleep less and influencing the quality (质量) of their sleep. As a result, they can have trouble staying awake the next day.

After studying children and teenagers aged 6 to 19, the researchers found a strong connection between the use of technology at bedtime and poor sleeping. The reason is not just that kids are staying up too late with their devices. Using a computer can overstimulate (过度刺激) the mind and emotions (情绪), the researchers say. A smartphone or an iPad also sends out a light that influences the body’s natural timing. All these can lead to poor sleep quality. And many kids could be at risk. According to the research, 72% of all children and 89% of teenagers have at least one device in their sleep environment. Most of these devices are used near bedtime.

Many kids get less sleep on school nights than they should. According to the National Sleep Foundation, kids aged 6 to 13 should get between nine and eleven hours of sleep a night. Getting enough sleep is especially important for learning subjects like math and foreign languages.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises kids to stop looking at screens at least half an hour before bedtime. This helps their brains slow down and gets their bodies ready for sleep. The AAP says bedrooms should be “screen-free”.

If you can’t help picking up a technology device at bedtime, try these relaxing activities instead:

Keep a diary: Writing your thoughts on paper can clear your mind.

Try a mind exercise: Close your eyes and count backward from 100 to 1.

Just relax: Breathe in and out slowly and deeply. Sweet dreams!

    根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。

【1】What is the result of the new research?

A.Technology devices put kids in danger.

B.Using technology devices at bedtime causes poor sleep.

C.Kids spend too much time on technology devices.

【2】How does a technology device influence a kid’s sleep according to the passage?

    A.By catching a kid’s attention.

    B.By making noises.

    C.By sending out a light.

【3】According to the passage, getting enough sleep is very important for us to learn ________.

    A.English

    B.history

    C.science

【4】According to the passage, which of the following sentences is TRUE?

A.Kids aged 6 should get at least 11 hours of sleep a night.

B.A few teenagers use at least one technology device in their bedrooms.

C.Kids should stop using technology devices at least 30 minutes before going to the bed.

【5】At the end of the passage, the writer gives some advice on how to ________.

    A.improve sleep quality

B.make good use of technology devices

C.avoid using technology devices at bedtime

To: Aggie@ yahoo. com From: Joe@heinfo.Net

    Subject: Help!   Date: 21/ 10/ 2006 10:02 a. m.

    Dear Aunt Aggie,

I’m having a problem with my classmate, Rena, at school. The other day I wrote an e-mail to another classmate, Beth, in which I said some things about Rena that perhaps weren’t very nice. Unluckily, when Beth was writing back to me, she accidentally forwarded(无意间转发)the message to Rena! Now Rena is really angry with me and won’t talk to me, and Beth is unhappy as well. She’s said sorry to me a hundred times already, but the harm is done. I feel bad, because I never would have said those things to Rena’s face, but how can I get her to forgive(谅解)me? What should I do?

    Joe

To: Joe@ heinfo. net From: Aggie@ yahoo. com

    Subject: Some advice  Date: 22/ 10/ 2006 10:45 a. m.

    Dear Joe,

This problem is more common than you might think! E-mail is very useful, but also very dangerous, as you don’t know where your message might end up! First of all, you should say sorry right away to Rena. Explain that it was a mistake, and that you didn’t mean to hurt her feelings. It may take time for her to be able to forgive you, but that’s up to her. Then you might want to do something nice for her. Perhaps send her some flowers to show that you’re truly sorry. Also, you should remember that old saying: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. And good luck!

    Aggie

【1】What is Joe’s problem in the first e-mail?

    A. Joe made Rena unhappy and he felt very sad.

    C. Joe received a wrong e-mail from Rena and became angry.

    D. Joe’s friend, Beth, is unhappy because Joe sent her an angry e-mail.

【2】After Rena’s feelings got hurt, what did Joe do?

    A. He emailed her and said sorry.

    B. He asked Beth what he should do.

    C. He emailed Aunt Aggie for help.

    D. He said sorry to Rena face to face.

【3】What does the underline sentence mean in the second e-mail?

    It means “______.”

    A. because you don’t know who the e-mail is for

    B. because you can never know who will get your e-mail at last

    C. because you don’t know where your e-mail was written

    D. because you never know where the message is from

【4】What advice did Aggie give Joe?

    A. Joe, Beth and Rena should have a talk together.

    B. Joe should wait for some time before saying sorry to Rena.

    C. Joe should ask Beth to explain that to Rena.

    D. Joe should say sorry to Rena, and then send her some flowers.

    【5】From the e-mails, we know that ______.

    A. Joe, Rena and Beth study at different schools

    B. Beth didn’t forward the message to Rena
