“I feel great!” said Wang Yaping when she came out of the Tiangong space station, waving (招手) back to the earth.

On Nov. 7, the 42-year-old made history. She became China’s first female spacewalker! Wang, together with astronaut Zhai Zhigang, completed a 6.5-hour spacewalk. They adjusted (调整) the station’s robotic arm. They also tested the safety of their spacesuits. These spacesuits were made by China. Wang’s space dream started in 2003, when China sent its first astronaut Yang Liwei into space. At that time, Wang was a pilot in the Chinese army. After having safe flights for 1,600 hours over nine years, Wang was a strong candidate (候选人) to become an astronaut in 2010. She pushed herself hard, getting the same training as men.

Wang said that as astronauts, women have their own advantages. Women may be more patient and can deal with loneliness better. Women’s hearts are also easier to adapt (适应) to the weightless environment, making them more suitable for long-term missions.

Wang Yaping went a long way before becoming the first woman to enter the Tiangong space station. She sets a good example for all women who dream of going to space.

  • 25、You either have it, or you don’t — a sense of direction. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map while others can lose themselves in the next street?

Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it.

“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around.” says Jim Martland, research director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.”

Jim Martland also emphasizes that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:

·If you are using a map, turn it so that it relates to (与……有联系) the way you are facing.

·If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree — something easy to recognize. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.

·Simplify (简化) the way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or wells in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are.

Now you will never get lost again.

【1】Which of the following things cannot be used as landmarks?

    A.Tower blocks.

    B.Hills.

    C.Wells.

    D.Bikes.

【2】What is true of seven-year-old children according to the passage?

A.They never have a sense of direction without maps.

B.They should never be allowed out alone if they lack a sense of direction.

C.They have a sense of direction and can find their way around.

D.They can develop a good sense of direction if they are driven around in a car.

【3】What does the underlined word “emphasize” mean in the passage?

A.To give special importance to something.

    B.To express thanks for somebody.

C.To understand or become aware of a fact.

    D.To admire somebody.

【4】What may be the best title of the passage?

    A.A research on direction.

    B.A sense of direction.

C.People’s ability of finding the way.

    D.Scientists’ research on skills.

  • 27、In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors.

The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning (挣得) $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants (佣人), Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours.

It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.

Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.

People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.
