四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、To celebrate his friend’s birthday, Luke Fortune drove from a small town in Central Oregon to Portland, where he parked his car in a paid garage overnight. The next morning, he discovered that the car’s window had been smashed, along with his dreams for the future: His backpack and computer were gone.

“Everything important to me was on that computer,” said Fortune, 21, who is studying to become a paramedic.

Two days after the theft, another young man was standing outside his apartment, also in Portland. Masoud Almazrouei, 29, was an exchange student from the United Arab Emirates. He had been approached by a man who said he had a computer for sale. Only $200. Almazrouei, who had been in the United States for only a year, admits now that he was naive(天真的). But he needed a computer so he bought it, took it home, and turned it on. Within seconds, he saw files and photographs.

“I wondered who would sell a computer with all of this on it,” he said. “I realized it could be stolen.” Almazrouei found what appeared to be the owner’s cell phone number and called it.

Fortune didn’t trust this guy with a thick accent and thought it was a seam.

Soon after, a police officer called Fortune to say that a man had dropped the computer off and bad said he was sorry. He passed along the man’s number.

Fortune called and thanked Almazrouei and insisted on paying him a reward of $200, the money he was out. Almazrouei refused. He said it was his mistake to buy the computer from someone he didn’t know. More important, he said, it was his honor and duty as a Muslim to return the property to the rightful owner. “I saw a photo of this man in his paramedic uniform,” Almazrouei said. “They help people. He is a good man. I don’t want my money back.”

Still, the encounter produced its own kind of rewards. For Fortune, it was a lesson of cultural awareness during the sometimes terrible national argument about immigrants(移民), especially from the Arab world. “I’m from a small mainly white town,” Fortune said. “I’ve never met a Muslim(穆斯林).To my surprise , he’s a good man.”

Almazrouei’s lesson was perhaps beyond words. When a story about the two young men’s encounter made it to the local papers, Almazrouei received a call from Wim Wiewel, the president of Portland State University, where Almazrouei is studying economics.

“We thought since you gave back the laptop, we should give you a laptop so that you’ll have one,” Wiewel told him. “We’re very proud of you. It was a great story, but you did the right thing.”

【1】What is the correct order of the events that happened?

①The computer was stolen in a paid garage.

②Almazrouei found a lot of files and photographs in the computer.

③Unsuspecting, Almazrouei bought the computer at $200.

④Almazrouei called Fortune but it didn’t work.

    A.①②③④

    B.①③②④

    C.③④②①

    D.②①③④

【2】The underlined word “seam” in Para. 5 is closest in meaning to “________”.

    A.trick

    B.game

    C.mistake

    D.accident

【3】What does the author mean by saying “Still, the encounter produced its own kind of rewards” in Para. 8?

A.Kindness will eventually pay off one day.

    B.Almazrouei entered a famous university.

C.Fortune could realize his dream with his computer back.

D.Both of the young men learned something in their own way.

【4】What can be inferred from the passage?

    A.Theft is common in Portland.

    B.Almazrouei was short of money.

C.Fortune could not realize his dreams without his computer.

D.Fortune used to look down on Muslims.

Bad luck! A lot of apples has already been carried there when they arrived. A few days later they had to sell them at a low price (价格)。They felt unhappy and returned to their village.

  • 26、Many years ago, on my first day of college, a roommate of mine turned to me for help. He took a bottle of soda out of his bag. The lid, he said, was too tight. I (quite easily) opened it for him, and he thanked me.

One week later, we started to receive military training (军训). We had to gather (集合) at 5:30 a.m. every day. One morning, I was still in dreamland at 5:20. That roommate of mine woke me up. I sincerely (诚挚地) thanked him. Luckily, neither of us was late for that day’s training.

Later that day, I had a chat with that roommate. I said that we were no longer just classmates; we had already become friends. Perhaps, I added, we didn’t have to mind our p’s and q’s so much around each other. He thought over my words and nodded. Over the next four years, we continued to help each other quite often, but we almost never said thank you.

I always feel thankful when someone offers me a helping hand. But I was often too shy to say thank you out loud. And I always felt embarrassed (尴尬的) whenever someone thanked me for a small favor (帮忙) .

After I started to work, however, my attitude towards thanks changed. A thank you is often just a polite ending to a conversation. However, it is important. Saying thanks directly lets the other side know that I’m thankful. It also makes the office a lovelier place.

Thanks is a powerful word. Whenever you feel thankful, say it.

    A.He thought it’s not necessary.

B.He didn’t feel thankful for others.

C.He was shy to express his thanks.

D.He felt embarrassed to be thanked.

【3】What does the writer advise us to do?

    A.Express our thanks directly.

B.Understand the power of thank you.

    C.Be thankful in our lives.

    D.Help others whenever possible.

    【4】How is the text organized?(①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2……)

  • 27、   Have you wondered how your pets are feeling? When your dog wags (来回摇摆) its tail, does that mean it is happy? A new app called Happy Pets can tell you what’s going on.

The app uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze (分析) the facial(面部的) expressions of cats and dogs. Then it can tell you what kind your pet is and how it is feeling. It can show the five most common feelings — happiness, anger, neutral (中性的) feelings, sadness and fear.

Researchers at the University of Melbourne in Australia developed the app. The key technology used in the app is facial recognition, a common use of AI. We can unlock our mobile phones or enter train stations with facial recognition readers. But this is the first time that the technology has been used for animals.

The app’s AI was first taught to recognize a picture of an animal. Then, it was taught to recognize the facial features of cats and dogs. Next came the most important step — teaching it to detect (察觉) emotions (情感) according to certain facial features. For instance, if a dog closes its eyes and mouth while changing the position of its ears, this means the dog is scared. To master this skill, the AI program “saw” and “read” thousands of example images.

Are the results correct? The researchers think they are believable since the app has been tested many times. Interestingly, they have found that cats are harder to read than dogs. In the future, the app might also be able to analyze a pet’s body to make its readings more correct.
