二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、“Is data the new oil?” asked advocates of big data back in 2012 in Forbes magazine. By 2016, with the rise of big data’s fast-growing cousin deep learning, we had become more certain: “Data is the new oil,” stated Fortune magazine.

Amazon’s Neil Lawrence has a slightly different comparison: Data is coal. Not coal today, though, but coal in the early days of the 18th century, when Thomas Newcomen invented the steam engine. Newcomen built his device to pump water out of the southwest’s rich tin (锡) mines.

The problem, as Lawrence said, was that the pump was rather more useful to those who had a lot of coal than those who didn’t: it was good, but not good enough to be able to buy enough coal in to run it. That was so true that the first of Newcomen’s steam engines wasn’t built in a tin mine, but in coal works near Dudley.

So why is data coal? The problem is similar: there are a lot of Newcomen in the world of deep learning. New companies are coming up with revolutionary new ways to train machines to do impressive tasks, from reconstructing facial data from images to learning the writing style of an individual user to better predict which word they are going to type in a sentence. And yet, like Newcomen, their innovations are so much more useful to the people who actually have large amounts of raw material to work from.

But there is an ending to the story: 69 years later, James Watt made a nice change to the Newcomen steam engine, adding a condenser (冷凝器) to the design. That change, Lawrence said, “made the steam engine much more efficient, and that’s what triggered the industrial revolution.”

Whether data is oil or coal, then, there’s another way the comparison holds up: a lot of work is going into trying to make sure we can do more, with less.

“If you look at all the areas where deep learning is successful, they’re all areas where there’s lots of data,” points out Lawrence. That’s great if you want to classify images of cats, but less helpful if you want to use deep learning to diagnose rare illnesses. “It’s generally considered unacceptable to force people to become sick in order to acquire data.”

It’s not as impressive as teaching a computer to play a game better than any human alive, but “data efficiency” is a vital step if deep learning is to move away from simply taking in large amounts of data and giving out the best correlations (关联) possible.

【1】The first of Newcomen’s steam engines wasn’t built in a tin mine because________.

A.its operation required a lot of coal

B.it would lose its function in a tin mine

C.it was in greater demand in coal works

D.the rich mines required more advanced aids

【2】According to the passage, in which situation is deep learning the least successful?

    A.Reconstructing facial data.

    B.Predicting a word in a sentence.

    C.Classifying images of cats.

    D.Diagnosing rare diseases.

【3】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Watt’s condenser helped the steam engine consume less coal.

B.Data involving patients is often collected through immoral ways.

C.Teaching machines to learn is a vital step towards data efficiency.

D.Thomas Newcomen’s steam engine had revolutionary applications.

【4】Neil Lawrence compared data to coal to indicate that________.

A.acquiring data is as complex as mining for coal

B.a change is required to make more out of less data

C.data is the new fuel to start an information revolution

D.a larger amount of data is needed to accomplish something

  • 27、So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to  undertake to do for what only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing  reading on to them. It is certainly not endless  hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas  insists that "reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible."

Teaching and learning are two entirely different  processes. They differ in kind and function. The  function of teaching is to create the conditions and  the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity: It can be seen and observed.

Learning to read involves all that each individual does not make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny. If teacher and learner  roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done  through teaching will aid the child in  knowledge. Smith has one principal rule for all  teaching instructions. "Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful,  enjoyable and frequent experience for children."

When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner  fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are  given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.

1The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that____.

    A. it is one of the most difficult school courses

    B. students spend endless hours in reading

    C. reading tasks are assigned with little guidance

    D. too much time is spent in teaching of reading

2The word "scrutiny"(Para.3) most probably  means____.

    A. inquiry   B. observation

    C. control   D. suspect

3The main idea of the passage is that ____.

    A. teachers should do as little as possible in helping students learn to read

    B. teachers should encourage students to read as widely as possible

    C. reading ability is something acquired rather than taught

    D. reading is more complicated than generally believed

  • 28、   Ignore what they say about TV rotting your brain — our research found that many people are using television shows as both a form of entertainment and a way to help them learn English. One of the best ways to teach and to learn how to speak the English language is to actually watch American and British television shows and some learning channels.

We were interested in discovering what English learners are watching to help them improve their skills outside of the classroom. US political drama series House of Cards was the most popular TV show among our 6,000 global survey participants, particularly in China, South Korea and India. British period drama Downtown Abbey is the favourite of Russian and Japanese respondents, however, learners in Mexico, the USA, Turkey and Brazil prefer Breaking Bad.

The rise of on-demand streaming services has enabled viewers all over the world to watch shows without having to wait for them to be broadcast in their country, which explains why shows created especially for online providers, such as House of Cards, have become so universally popular.

Perhaps one of the biggest surprise success stories is Downtown Abbey, which is one of the most-watched British TV shows of all time. The show, which explores the lives of an aristocratic (贵族的) British family and their servants during the early twentieth century, has been watched by more than 120 million people worldwide. Downtown’s creators didn’t expect the subject matter to resonate (引起共鸣) so well with global viewers, but most of the stories are about emotional situations that everyone can relate to, no matter where they are in the world.

Television programs may be a fun way to improve vocabularies and build familiarity with genuine dialogue and different cultures, but in recent years there have been complaints (抱怨) that actors are mumbling (含糊地说) their way through their lines. Even native English speakers are struggling to understand what they are watching on screen. This is partly down to the desire for actors to appear “genuine” and capture the true feature of a character.

1Why has the drama series House of Cards become so popular?

A.Because it is only shown on TV.

    B.Because its stories interest everyone.

C.Because it is about the life of the British aristocracy.

D.Because audiences can watch it online without waiting.

2What has been the problem with language learning through television programs in recent years?

    A.The actors’ terrible acting.

    B.The actors’ unclear lines.

    C.The dramas’ bad plots.

    D.The dramas’ bad lines.

3We can infer that the purpose of the research is to ______.

A.show that people like American and British TV shows

B.introduce viewers to the world’s most popular TV series

C.prove that television shows are helpful in learning English

D.explain the function of television shows

4What is the text mainly about?

A.A fun way to learn English.

    B.How to learn English better.

C.Where to find popular foreign TV shows.

D.The disadvantages of watching TV shows.

  • 29、As a young boy, I knew what people said was not always what they meant or were feeling. And I knew it was possible to get others to do what I wanted if I read their real feelings and responded suitably to their needs. At the age of eleven, I sold sponge rubber door-to-door after school and quickly worked out how to tell if someone was likely to buy from me. When I knocked on a door, if someone told me to go away but their hands were open and they showed their palms, I knew it was safe to continue with my show because they weren’t angry or threatening although they may have a cold attitude. If someone told me to go away in a soft voice but used a pointed finger or closed hand, I knew it was time to leave.

As a teenager, I became a pots and pans salesperson, and my ability to read people earned me enough money to buy my first house. Selling gave me the chance to meet people and study them close and to know whether they would buy or not, simply by watching their body language.

I joined the life insurance (保险) business at the age of twenty. And I went on to break several sales records for my company, becoming the youngest person to sell over a million dollars’ worth of business in my first year. This achievement allowed me to become a member of the well-known Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT). I was lucky that the skills I’d learned as a boy in watching body language while selling pots and pans could be used in this new area, and were directly related to the success I could have in any business closely connected with people.

【1】What does the author seem to share in Paragraph 1?.

    A.His present feelings.

    B.His positive life attitude.

    C.His language ability.

    D.His earlier experience.

【2】What does the underlined part “this new area” in the last paragraph refer to ?

    A.The life insurance business.

    B.The pots and pans industry.

    C.The study of body language.

    D.The work of the MDRT.

【3】What was the key to the author’s success?

    A.Listening to customers.

    B.Arguing with customers.

    C.Studying customers’ words.

    D.Reading customers’ body language.

【4】How does the text mainly develop?

A.By following the order of space.

B.By following the order of time.

    C.By giving examples.

    D.By giving reasons.

Being a suspect in the disappearance of girl in France

One of the funny adventure stories that I have is from the time I found a 5-month housesit in the middle of the French countryside. It sounded idyllic (悠闲的), and perfect for me and my girlfriend at the time who had just started out as digital natives.

In reality, it wasn’t quite as idyllic as advertised. The biggest issue was the lack of Internet; something which was supposed to have been installed by the time we arrived. But, we made do. We bought French sim cards with 3 GB of Internet each (the max we could get at the time) and vowed never to look at YouTube or anything that might use lots of data for the entire 5 months.

It was all going perfectly until one day there was a knock at the door and two local French policemen were standing there. They began asking us what we were doing in the property and where the owners were. In the best French, I could manage, I explained the concept of house sitting but I could see it wasn’t going over.

Then, they showed us a picture of a girl who was missing. We hadn’t seen her and, in fact, we didn’t know anyone in the town. We apologized that we couldn’t be of more help, thinking that was that.

It wasn’t. One of the policemen then pulled out a printout of a forum conversation between the missing girl and someone who they believed was her biological father. Then in the forum (论坛) conversation, they showed me a mobile number: my French mobile number.

I didn’t know how to explain it apart from saying that it must be a mistake, but that wasn’t good enough. They asked to see my computer and began looking through the search history. Then, obviously not buying my house sitting story, they asked where the owners were again.

    Paragraph 1

Unsatisfied, they told me to come into the police station that afternoon for more questioning at 2 pm.
