Maria Sibylla Merian
Until the 1670s, scientists thought that caterpillars(毛虫) and butterflies were two totally different creatures. Thanks to Maria Sibylla Merian, we know the truth about these winged insects. She began collecting, studying and drawing them when she was young. She was one of the few naturalists of her time who actually studied live insects. It was through her study of caterpillars that she discovered the truth about their life cycles.
Lucy Stone
If you know a woman who keeps her own family name after marriage, you should know that it's a tradition started by Lucy Stone. She initially changed her name, but decided to change it back a year later. She held the belief that "a wife should no more take her husband's name than he should take hers". She became the first American married woman to keep her own family name for her entire life. Both she and her husband also fought the popular idea that husbands had legal control over their wives.
Nellie Bly
Nellie Bly, a famous journalist, was born in 1864 in Pennsylvania. When a Pittsburgh Dispatch journalist wrote an article saying that working women were unacceptable, Bly wrote an argument that got her a job offer from the newspaper. What made her well-known was that she spent some time living in a mental institution to expose the conditions the patients faced. In 1889, she set out to travel around the world. And she made it.
Alice Coachman Davis
Alice Coachman Davis was the first African-American woman to win an Olympic gold medal. She grew up in Georgia, where females were not allowed to join sports teams. So she trained on her own. 22、A Canadian professor. Karl Moore, has written two articles on the role of different personality types in business. In one article, Moore estimates that around 40% of the population is introverts(内向的人), 40% is extroverts(外向的人)and 20% is ambiverts who can show both characteristics. In another paper, he finds that extroverts are 25% more likely to be in a high-earning job than the introverts who are less outgoing. This study also finds that the children of richer families are more likely to be extroverts.
Although it is easy to assume that the extroverts are most likely to go further in their lives, it is possible that working in a highly-paid job makes people more confident and outgoing. Or it could simply be that children who grow up in richer homes are less likely to face the kind of stressful events that hurt self-confidence. People with higher self-confidence may apply for more demanding jobs and may be more likely to believe that their efforts will be rewarded. Those with less confidence may feel it is not worth trying too hard.
But introverts should not give up hope of climbing the slippery social ladder. His study also finds that once appointed as CEOs, the introverts are more likely than extroverts to surpass the expectations of bosses and investors, because they usually expect less from the introverts.
Any advice for the introverts and extroverts?
Moore suggests that the introverts must try to show enthusiasm, or make an inspiring speech, when the situation calls for it. And extroverts, who have a tendency to speak the loudest and most often, need to shut up and listen to their teams—not just because when the bossy speaks first, others will be unwilling to disagree.
Eventually, Moore puts his hope in the ambiverts. He finds that they can be good salespeople because they are not only able to listen to their clients and understand their needs but also have the energy to sell their firms' goods and services. Moore thinks that successful CEOs have to become ambiverts at times in order to succeed.
【1】What has Karl Moore found about the extroverts?
A.They usually come from poorer families.
B.They are less confident than the introverts.
C.They are more likely to earn more money.
D.They account for a quarter of the population.
【2】What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The hope for the ambiverts.
B.The problems with the extroverts.
C.The importance of self-confidence.
D.The reasons for the extroverts' success.
【3】Which of the following can replace the underlined word "surpass" in paragraph 3?
A.Live up to.
B.Go beyond.
C.Adapt to.
D.Take control of.

24、 In the winter of 1664-65, a bitter cold fell on London in the days before Christmas. Above the city, an unusually bright comet (彗星) shot across the sky, exciting much prediction of a snow storm. Outside the city wall, a woman was announced dead of a disease that was spreading in that area. Her house was locked up and the phrase “Lord Have Mercy On Us” was painted on the door in red.
By the following Christmas, the virus that had killed the woman would go on to kill nearly 100,000 people living in and around London — almost a third of those who did not flee.
In The Great Plague (瘟疫), historian A.Lloyd Moote and microbiologist Dorothy C.Moote provide a deeply informed account of this plague year. Reading the book, readers are taken from the palaces of the city’s wealthiest citizens to the poor areas where the vast majority of Londoners were living, and to the surrounding countryside with those who fled. The Mootes point out that, even at the height of the plague, the city did not fall into chaos. Doctors, nurses and the church staff remained in the city to care for the sick; city officials tried their best to fight the crisis with all the legal tools; and commerce continued even as businesses shut down.
To describe life and death in and around London, the authors focus on the experiences of nine individuals. Through their letters and diaries, the Mootes offer fresh descriptions of key issues in the history of the Great Plague: how different communities understood and experienced the disease; how medical, religious, and government bodies reacted; how well the social order held together; the economic and moral dilemmas people faced when debating whether to flee the city; and the nature of the material, social, and spiritual resources supporting those who remained. Based on humanity (人性), the authors offer a masterful portrait of a city and its inhabitants attacked by — and daringly resisting — unimaginable horror.
【1】What can we learn from paragraph one?
A.A comet always follows the storm.
B.London was under approaching step threat.
C.London was prepared for the disease.
D.The woman was the beginning of the disease.
【2】What do the Mootes say about London during the great plague?
A.The people tried a lot in vain. B.The rich area didn’t experience the plague.
C.The city remained organized. D.The majority fled and thus survived.
【3】Why do the Mootes focus on the nine individuals?
A.They were famous people in history. B.They all manage to survive the plague
C.They united by thinking and acting as one. D.They provided a vivid story of humanity.
【4】The purpose of the text is__________.
A.to introduce a new book B.to correct a misunderstanding
C.to report a new study D.to show respect to the authors
25、How to help your kids find a purpose? You don’t have to start with the really big questions. Quick, what’s the meaning of life?” Many of us may not be able to answer that, but that doesn’t ______ our kids don’t have questions or need answers.
“The sense that your personal life is ______ to you is a basis of psychological well-being,” says Michael F. Steger, director of the laboratory for Meaning and Quality of Life at Colorado State University. Not only that,it is tightly tied to being happier, more positive, more ______, more caring, more helpful, more resilient (坚韧), and more satisfied in your life, relationships, and work.
But helping your kids find meaning doesn’t mean parents have to ______ all life’s ancient mysteries, Steger says. The ______ is to understand the difference between the meaning of life and the meaning in life.
“We do not have to start with the biggest and most troubling questions about our lives,” Steger says. “We can start with trying to ______ how, today, right now, we are going to do one thing that makes the story of our lives more positive, or makes a positive difference to someone else.”
With kids in ______ school, Steger says, “At the most basic level, our best hopes for our children are that they feel their lives matter and that they ______.” To start conversations along those lines, says Steger, “You can ask questions about what they think their best ______ or strengths are, whether they have good relationships with other people, whether they care about others. You can ask them about times when they have made a difference, made someone feel better, felt ______ for doing something, or helped someone out. All of these kinds of questions can start a conversation about your kid’s ______ way of being in and contributing to the world.”
In middle school, says Steger, “Kids are being exposed to ideas, behaviors, assumptions, and priorities that might be ______ different from the ones they have always assumed were true.” So for kids this age, parents can start conversations focusing on how your children’s sense of who they are, how they related to others and what life is has been ______.
By high school, according to Steger, “We hope our children see how much their lives matter, see that they are at the beginning of an exciting and strengthening life story, and have some slight ideas about ______.” But the question of what you want to do with your life is too big for a single conversation, says Steger. Instead, he encourages parents to have ______, smaller conversations with their kids about how they view themselves and their lives, and what kind of impact they would like to make.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Eduardo reached into his backpack, searching for his cell phone. He was scared of having to spend the spring break at Aunt Letty’s farm. Although he had protested, his parents decided that spending time on the farm would be a great experience for him. They grew up on a farm and believed that responsibility, hard work and respect for the land were valuable lessons.
“So, have you ever ridden a horse?” Aunt Letty asked, trying to turn his attention away from his phone. “Hmmm, no.” he answered. “Well, we’ve got a nice calm horse I think you will like. Hercules----sounds like a beast, but he’s basically a gentle giant-big but kindhearted!” she said, smiling. Eduardo glanced at his aunt, annoyed that he was expected to work. He tried to text a friend, but there was no cell reception.
The next two days were busy. The crow of the roosters woke them up, and they had breakfast before dawn. Then they went out to the barn to get the feed while animals waited to be fed. The afternoons were filled with transporting hay, cleanup, and caring for the animals. At dusk, when the farm was finally quiet, Aunt Letty stretched her arms out and breathed. “Just take a deep breath of that sweet country air!” Eduardo, exhausted from the chores, was unable to appreciate his work.
On the fourth day, without warning, Aunt Letty announced, “It’s time to meet Hercules.” She led him into the stable (马厩). Aunt Letty was right. Hercules was remarkable.
Aunt Letty held her hand open for Eduardo to take. Unwillingly, he let her guide his hand toward Hercules and allowed the magnificent creature to sniff his palm. Softly, Hercules rubbed his nose and mouth against him.
“It feels like velvet (天鹅绒)!” Eduardo beamed. An hour later, he couldn’t help scratching Hercules on his neck and offering him carrots. Magically, a bond between them formed. That night, as they headed toward the house, Eduardo was inspired. His arms spreading wide, he inhaled and said, “Take a breath of that sweet country air!”
