二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Do you have a spare room in your house? What about a driveway for your car? Both of these can help you make money. Many people who are feeling the pinch are taking advantage of what’s been called the “sharing economy”.

Perhaps the best-known example of a company in this field is Airbnb---an American web business which allows you to rent out your spare room to holidaymakers. It says it operates in 34,000 cities and it has over 1,500,000 listings. It seems to have concerned the market!

A British company is doing something with parking spaces.JustPark’s founder, Anthony Eskinazi, says ,“When I had the original idea,Ispotted a driveway close to a sports stadium. It would have been so convenient if I could have just parked in that driveway rather than in commercial car park.” And he has a big clientele(客户):around 20,000 people have advertised their spaces on the site, and he says around half a million drivers use it.There are other sites doing very similar things, like Uber and Lyft---these let drivers share their cars with other passengers.Any driver knows how valuable a place to park is .A church near Kings Cross in central London has apparently made over £200,000 by renting out space in its yard to travelers!

Because this is a new business world, those rules aren’t there yet and many people are happy to share...as long as it pays!

But the sharing economy has its critics:the competitors of these new companies.People who run things like traditional B&B, commercial car parks and taxi services are afraid of ending up out of pocket. And there is another issue:regulations on these new business are unclear. How will renting out your driveway affect your neighbor?

1What does the underlined phrase “feeling the pinch” probably mean?

    A. Lacking in money   B. Full of curiosity

    C. Willing to help others   D. Unsatisfied with their life

2Who may be against the sharing economy?

    A. A taxi driver who can’t find a a parking  place   B. A priest in the church near Kings Cross

    C. A traveller who needs accomodiation   D. A well-known high-end holiday hotel

3Why are many people pleased to share according to paragraph 4?

    A. They can gain huge profits   B. They needn’t pay any fee

    C. There are few rules to limit them   D. The new business has no risks

  • 22、Scientists today are making greater effort to study ocean currents(洋流). Most do it using satellites and other high-tech equipment. However, ocean expert Curtis Ebbesmeyer does it in a special way-by studying movements of random floating garbage. A scientist with many years’ experience, he started this type of research in the early 1990s when he heard about hundreds of athletic shoes washing up on the shores of the northwest coast of the United States. There were so many shoes that people were setting up swap meets to try and match left and right shoes to sell or wear.

Ebbesmeyer found out in his researches that the shoes — about 60,000 in total — fell into the ocean in a shipping accident. He phoned the shoe company and asked if they wanted the shoes back. As expected, the company told him that they didn't. Ebbesmeyer realized this could be a great experiment. If he learned when and where the shoes went into the water and tracked where they landed, he could learn a lot about the patterns of ocean currents.

The Pacific Northwest is one of the world's best areas for beachcombing(海滩搜寻) because winds and currents join here, and as a result, there is a group of serious beachcombers in the area. Ebbesmeyer got to know a lot of them and asked for their help in collecting information about where the shoes landed. In a year he collected reliable information on 1, 600 shoes. With this data, he and a colleague were able to test and improve a computer program designed to model ocean currents, and publish the findings of their study.

As the result of his work, Ebbesmeyer has become known as the scientist to call with questions about any unusual objects found floating in the ocean. He has even started an association of beachcombers and ocean experts, with 500 subscribers from West Africa to New Zealand. They have recorded all lost objects ranging from potatoes to golf gloves.

3How did Ebbesmeyer prove his assumption?

    A. By collecting information from beachcombers.

    B. By studying the shoes found by beachcomber.

    C. By searching the web for ocean currents models.

    D. By researching ocean currents data in the library.

4Ebbesmeyer is most famous for ________.

    A. traveling widely the coastal cities of the world

    B. making records for any lost objects on the sea

    C. running a global currents research association

    D. phoning about any doubtful objects on the sea

5What is the purpose of the author in writing this passage?

  • 23、You know the saying “You’re as young as you feel.” Well, there may be some truth to that, according to researchers at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Ellen Langer, a Harvard psychologist who studies how the mind influences the body, and his colleagues reviewed the scientific literature for evidence that a person’s perception (感知) of their age might influence their health. They published their results in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science.

In one study that Langer led, 47 women had their hair done. The women who thought their new hairdos made them look younger did look younger to objective observers, who were shown before-and-after pictures. The women who thought they looked younger also showed a drop in blood pressure. Another study involving 4, 421 men found that those who became bald at a relatively young age were more likely to get cancer and heart disease than men who did not. Similarly, another study involving 2, 017 men found that those who lost their hair early were more likely to develop heart disease. “We believe that the feelings associated with being older than one’s real age account for some of these health outcomes,” the researchers wrote.

The researchers also described studies that found that women who had children later in life were more likely to be healthier and live longer than those who had children early, which they attributed to the fact that these mothers tend to spend more time with younger women. Similarly, people who marry younger partners tend to live longer than those who marry older partners, according to other studies.

Taken together, the research “supports the general mind-body hypothesis (假说) that when a younger mind is prepared, a younger body can accompany it.” While the mechanism remains unclear, the researchers figured that suggestions associated with aging can “make one unconsciously or consciously aware of old age and trigger a series of physiological processes that can have real effects on short-term and long-term health.”

【1】What’s the author’s attitude towards the research results?

    A.Negative.

    B.Objective.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Indifferent.

【2】Which of the following statements is true according to paragraph 3?

A.Blood pressure is highly related to hairdos.

B.Getting cancer or heart disease is the result of baldness.

C.Feeling older than real age may be tied to health problems.

D.The women who love hairdos look younger than those who don’t.

【3】It can be inferred from paragraph 4 that ________.

A.often staying with younger people benefits health

B.the younger one of a couple lives much longer

C.a younger mother is more likely to live longer

D.people who want to live longer need to marry

【4】The passage mainly tells us that ________.

A.getting bald too early is not good for health

B.women had better give birth later in their life

C.feeling younger between a couple is very important to their health

D.people’s feeling of their age may have an effect on their own health

  • 24、Making Peace with Your Parents

As a teen, you’re going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are expanding. 1 Here is the challenge: Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers that are out in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses. Sometimes conflicts can’t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents.

For instance, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted, or hungry. A good time to talk is when you’re all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into an argument, you’d better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation—for now. 2

3 How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you’re going to do. Some teens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget that parents are more than rule-makers—they’re interesting people who like to watch movies, and go shopping—just like their teenagers!

Listen to what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you’re listening.4

What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be rocky? 5 You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend an ear.

Remember you can only change your own behavior; your parents are the only ones who can change theirs.

    A. You may consider seeking outside help.

    B. You can pick it up again when everyone’s more relaxed.

    C. And then you’ll be able to accept what your parents say.

    D. Faced with the challenge, children don’t know what to do.

    E. And your desire to take control of your own life is growing.

    F. It also gives them a chance to clear things up if you’re not on the same page.

    G. You are more likely to get along with your parents if your parents believe in you.
