二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A Japanese company, Next Technology, has created a robot dog that can tell you how bad your feet smell, by using a powerful sensor fixed in its nose. If you feet don’t have a bad smell. Hana-chan will happily wag its tail, if it's exposed to feet that are mildly smelly, it'll start to bark, and if they give off an extremely bad smell, it'll just fall over like the smell caused it to faint(昏倒).

Foot odor (脚臭) is a big deal in Japan, where it’s a custom for people to take off their shoes whenever they enter someone's home. In fact, exposing others to bodily odors can be considered annoyance in Japan. Some of the most brilliant minds in the country's tech industry have been trying to solve this problem. Last year, Thanko started selling axmpit (腋窝) fans designed to keep people's armpits nice and dry Now, we have Hana-chan.

The robot dog has a special sensor for a nose, and can tell you if your feet smell just by sniffing them for a few seconds. According to some media reports, Hana-chan can help solve the problem of extremely smelly feet by spraying them with air freshener, but it's unclear whether this feature comes built-in, or if you'll have to pay extra for it.

According to researchers at NextTechnology, the idea for Hana-chan was inspired by a person who desperately wanted some way to know if his feet smelled. "He told us his daughter had said his feet were smelly, " NextTechnology's Kimika Tsuji said. “But he didn't want to know how bad the odor was because he would feel hurt. That's why we developed this cute robot. "

You may be able to make Hana-chan faint with your smelly feet, but it can have the same effect on budget-conscious people. NextTechnology plans to start selling the feet-smelling robot dog for ¥100, 000 ($9, 280) next May.

1Under what condition will Hana-chan bark?

    A. When its nose is fixed with a sensor.

    B. When it wags its tail.

    C. When it detects mildly smelly feet.

    D. When something is wrong with its nose.

2Why is foot odor paid great attention to in Japan?

    A. Because Japanese have strong bodily odors.

    B. Because Japanese are usually barefooted at others' home.

    C. Because Japanese are especial considerate of others.

    D. Because its tech industry is highly developed.

3What can be inferred about Hana-chan from the text?

    A. It has a built-in air freshener sprayer.

    B. It's already available in the market.

    C. Its idea comes from Kimika Tsuji.

    D. It can recognize foot odor quickly.

4What does the underlined part in the last paragraph imply?

    A. Hana-chan is no cheap thing

    B. People should mind their smelly feet.

    C. People should be careful about their budget.

    D. Hana-chan makes people loosen their budget.

  • 22、Rembrandt van Rijn's most famous work, The Nightwatch was commanded in 1639 by Franz Banninck Cocq, the captain of Amsterdam's civil army, and portrayed him and his 17 members. It was completed in 1642 and spent more than 70 years in the hall of the civil army it was based on.

In 1715, Dutch officials decided to move the painting to the city hall in Amsterdam's Royal Palace. The almost 12 foot by 14-foot art work was too large to go through the doors, so the movers decided to cut the edges. The strips (边条) were never recovered. However, art historians have been aware of the missing items thanks to a smaller copy of the original scene painted by Dutch artist Gerrit Lundens.

In 2019, officials of Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum decided to recreate the missing sections. The team, led by scientist, Robert Erdmann, turned to a new AI algorithm (算法), which helps computers figure out what images may have once looked like. The scientists scanned images of the original and Lundens' painting to the computer. The AI was able to study the painting's perspective. It also recognized the exact colors used by the Dutch master and could even copy his brushstrokes (笔画).

The "missing" strips were printed and added to the painting. The left side included two men watching the event and a young boy running away from the army. A drummer and a barking dog were added to the painting's right side.

"It is spectacular because what Rembrandt painted was Captain Franz ordering his soldiers to march out, and that is now exactly what you see," said Taco Dibbits. "With the addition, especially on the left and the bottom, an empty space is created in the painting where they march towards. When the painting was cut, the soldiers were in the center, but Rembrandt intended them to be off-center marching towards that empty space, and that is the genius that Rembrandt understands: you create movement, a dynamic of the troops marching towards the left of the painting."

【1】Why were some sides of The Nightwatch cut off?

A.To make it easy to be displayed.

B.To get it through the doorway.

C.To place it in the hall of the civil army.

D.To please captain Franz Banninck Cocq.

【2】How can AI help reconstruct the painting?

A.By identifying the colors of the painting.

    B.By grasping the painter's brushstrokes.

    C.By changing the painting's perspective.

D.By finding a copy of the original painting.

【3】What can we learn from Taco's words?

A.The original painting centers on the soldiers.

B.The painting reflects an intention to move.

C.Franz Banninck Cocq is a genius of painting.

D.The empty left of the painting is useless.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.AI Draws a Masterwork in the Flesh

B.AI Brings a Painting Back to Life

C.AI Recreates a Painting from Its Original

D.AI Helps Restore a Painting to Its Original Form

  • 24、They’re WILD animals

    By Ernst-Ulrich Franzen

    March 11, 2010 (3) Comments

The story about the woman who lost some fingers while feeding a bear at a zoo in Manitowoc, after she ignored warnings and barriers(栅栏), reminded me of the story I heard about a couple who put their baby on the back of a wild horse in South Dakota to get a really cute picture. We all do silly things at times no one is immune but treating wild animals as lovely pets has to fall into a special category. Teddy bears and Disney movies aren’t actually representative of real bears.

    1. TosaLeft - Mar 11, 2010 10:46AM

Don’t you think that maybe, just maybe some alcohol was involved?

    2. tk421 - Mar 11, 2010 11:09 AM

It was already approved that alcohol was involved. Stories that begin with a drunk person saying “Hey, I got an idea, watch this!” rarely end well.

    3. Tristan Kloss - Mar 11, 2010 11:41 AM

Alcohol certainly isn’t involved when people decide to keep “pets” like chimpanzees, baby tigers, etc. Stupidity, definitely. Dogs are pets because of thousands of years of domestication. Even farm animals, which have been kept by humans for thousands of years as well, aren’t let in the house. So why keep animals that treat human contact with, at best, indifference(冷淡、不在乎) and, at worst, violence?

1In Ernst-Ulrich Franzen’s opinion, the woman lost her fingers because ________.

    A. the zoo keepers didn’t warn her of the danger

    B. she didn’t know the bear was a wild animal

    C. she was somehow influenced by cartoon characters

    D. she climbed over the barriers and angered the bear

2TosaLeft thinks the wounded woman ________.

    A. may have been drunk

    B. may be a little stupid

    C. was addicted to wine

    D. fed wine to the bear

    3tk421 means a drunk person ________.

    A. should be forbidden to enter the zoo

    B. usually gets himself into trouble

    C. is often fond of making up stories

    D. usually likes to show himself off

4What does Tristan Kloss think of people treating wild animals as pets?

    A. Kind.  B. Illegal.

    C. Loving.    D. Stupid.
