On arriving, he invited me to meet his family. As we walked towards the front door, he stopped at a small tree and touched the tips of the branches with both hands. When opening the door, his face was full of smiles and he hugged his two children and gave his wife a kiss.

Afterwards, he walked with me to the car. We passed the tree. I was so curious (好奇) that I asked him about what I had seen earlier. "Oh, that's my trouble tree," he replied, "I know I can't help having troubles on the job, but one thing is for sure. Those troubles don't belong to my children and wife. So I hang them in the tree every night and ask God to take care of them. Then in the morning, I pick them up again."

  • 22、Moms take care of their children's life and dads bring home food and make the family rules. These are the roles moms and dads fall into when they become parents and it's common among all cultures. But times change and parents' roles seem to be changing, too. More women are bringing home food by having fulltime jobs and men are taking care of their children at home.

The Chinese TV show Where are we going, Dad? provides a closer look at the changing roles of dads in modern family life. The show follows the adventures(冒险经历) of five celebrity(名人) dads who take trips with their young children (aged 4 to 6) and try to complete a set of tasks. It shows how young dads are trying hard to find the best way to raise their children and keep a closer relationship with them. Young dads no longer want to be cold.

Psychologists(心理学家)say that a strong fatherly influence(影响) is important in a child's development. Fathers teach their children skills and encourage them to try new things. They also give them a sense of safety. A child learns that if something goes wrong, he or she can depend on his or her dad to help fix it. The psychologists also say that without a dad, a child is more possible to drop out of school and get into trouble.

A mother's love is important, and so is a father's love. Chen Mo, a psychology professor says, “It takes both parents to raise a child. Children have different needs at different ages and this needs to be considered by both parents.”

1What are the common roles of moms and dads in all cultures?

    C. They are trying to make more money.

    D. They are trying to be cold to their kids.

3Why is a strong fatherly influence important in a child's development?

    A. Because fathers teach their children skills and encourage them to try new things. They also give them a sense of safety.

    B. Because if something goes wrong, a child can depend on his or her dad to help fix it.

    C. Because with a dad, a child can do better in schoolwork.

    C. Because both parents need to consider that children have different needs at different ages.

    D. Because it is the father's and the mother's duty to raise a child.

  • 23、In 2007, Barrington Irving became the youngest person to fly alone around the world. He was just 23 years old—and he built the plane himself. How did he achieve this?

Irving’s interest in flying started when he was 15. He was working in his parents’ bookstore in Miami, Florida. One of the customers was a pilot. Gary Robinson. One day, Robinson asked Irving if he was interested in flying. Irving didn’t think he was smart enough. But the next day, Robinson took Irving to an airport. He showed Irving inside the cockpit(驾驶舱)of a Boeing 777. That experience changed Irving’s life.

Irving really wanted to fly, but flight school was expensive. To achieve his dream, he worked different jobs. He washed airplanes and cleaned swimming pools. At home he practiced flying on a video game. In the end, he got enough money for flight school.

At flight school, Irving achieved his dream of learning how to fly. But he wasn’t finished. Next, he planned to build his own plane and fly alone around the world.

Building the plane was difficult. Irving asked more than 50 companies for airplane parts. Most said no, but he persisted(顽强地坚持)in asking. Three years later, he had parts worth $300,000. Columbia, an airplane company, agreed to build a plane using the parts. Soon, his airplane was ready to fly.

On March 23, 2007, Irving began his round-the-world trip. After 97 days-with 145 hours in the air-he landed back in Miami. A crowd of cheering people were there to welcome him.

Irving saw many young people in the crowd, and this had a powerful effect(影响)on him. He wanted to use his experience to help other young people achieve their own dreams.

“Everyone told me what I couldn’t do.” says Irving. “They said I was too young, that I didn’t have enough money. But even if no one believes in your dream,” he says, “you have to pursue(追求)it.”
