六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It was raining hard and nearing dark. I was late for an appointment in a nearby city that I know only by GPS. And now my phone has died. The usual exits were closed. I didn’t know how to get where I was going or how to let my appointment know I might not make it there.

I stopped at a fast food restaurant in a poor part of town and walked up to a mother and her teen daughter.

“I’m sorry, but is it possible for me to look up a number on your phone and then call the place and let them know I’m lost?” She handed me her phone and then told me I was lucky she had her phone, for it was getting ready to be off because she didn’t have enough money to pay the phone bill. The young girl and the mother didn't pay me much attention when I made a call. The appointment told me how to get there by another road.

Before I left, suddenly, I reached into my wallet where I don’t usually have cash and pulled out all I had a $20 bill. I gave it into the mother’s hand and then turned to leave quickly. I heard her daughter calling after me, “Thanks, sir. You have no idea how you just helped us.” What’s more, they really helped me.

  • 22、My name is Wang Qiang. I am nine years old. I came to America with my mum, dad and little brother from Shanghai, China two years ago. It was difficult to leave behind my friends, but the most difficult thing was learning a new language — English.

Over the last two years, I've got to understand most of the words my friends speak. But I was still often at a loss. And sometimes the words I speak sound quite different.

I think it would be okay if all I had to do was learn to speak English. But I had to learn reading and writing. In English, one letter can make many different sounds.Take the letter C for example (例子). If C is the first letter of a word like “cat”, its pronunciation is “k”, but when it is the first letter of a word like “centre”, its pronunciation is “s”. And think about W. If it is the first letter of a word like “white”, its pronunciation is “w”, but when it's the first letter of a word like “write”, it doesn't make any sound. How can I remember all of these?

Luckily, with the help of my teachers and classmates, I keep getting better. I'm sure someday I will speak English as well as them.

【1】Wang Qiang went to America at the age of ________.

    A.six

    B.seven

    C.eight

【2】What do the underlined words “at a loss” in Paragraph 2 mean in Chinese?

    B.愤怒

    C.困惑

【3】About speaking English, Wang Qiang ________.

    A.doesn't think it's too difficult

    B.doesn't need others' help

    C.thinks it's interesting

【4】By giving examples in Paragraph 3, Wang Qiang wants to tell us that ________.

A.different letters in English can make the same sound

B.one letter in English can make different sounds

C.C and W are important letters in English

【5】The passage mainly tells a story of ________.

    A.living with an American family

    B.moving to a new school

  • 23、Parking lots again came up for discussion in Shanghai. Another 220, 000 private cars will hit the roads this year, and the need to buy a car is still very high among people. More than 270,000 cars have no designated(指定)parking areas at night. In a middle school in Changing District, trees were cut in a green area to make way for car parking. The school had not considered car parking when it was being built,

A private car is used about an hour daily for driving and stays parked for 23 hours. Many private cars are used even less. Car-sharing offers users all kinds of cars. The cars are parked in car-sharing stations, lying throughout the city. Customers of car-sharing can book(预定)a car at any time ( day or night) by telephone or on the Internet. The customer then picks the booked car up at the set time. After finishing his/her business, they return the car to the same place where they picked it up. Maybe, this is one way to solve the car parking problem.

On the other hand, the idea of Park & Ride has been suggested. This means that underground train and city train should be developed quickly. You can leave your cars in car parks nearby subway and bus stations and then you can ride public transports to go to the city centre within minutes—great in wet weather or when you're carrying heavy bags. Park & Ride services can save you a little more time to do something you enjoy: catch up on e-mails, chat with friends, read the paper or simply relax, and prepare for the day ahead. Then the city will cut down the number of parking lots in the city centre.

1Why does the writer mention what the middle school did in Paragraph 1?

    A. To say car parking has been a problem for along time.

    B. To show the car parking problem is becoming more serious.

    C. To warm the middle school didn't care about environment.

    D. To tell people to learn from the school for more parking areas.

2How does the writer like the car-sharing service?

    A. Expensive.   B. OK.

    C. Not possible.   D. Not convenient.

3According to the text, private cars   .

    A. are not useful at all

    B. are not used very often

    C. are responsible for the city train development

    D. help drivers reach the city centre more quickly

4According to the idea of Park & Ride, we can infer(推断)the city will have to   .

    A. build more parking lots near subway and bus stops

    B. offer more cars to the customers in the city centre

    C. encourage people not to drive cars to the city

    D. ask people not to buy more cars

    Painful for Your Ears

Do you often listen to music at loud volumes? You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The human ear has three different parts. The outer ear is the part you can see. The middle ear and inner ear are inside your head. That doesn't mean those parts can't be hurt. They can be harmed by loud noises. Over one billion young people are at risk of hearing loss due to listening to loud noise for long periods of time, said WHO. Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes can harm your hearing.

Sounds are measured in decibels (dB分贝). A whisper is 30 dB. A friend talking is about 60 dB. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB. The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 dB for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes.

Loud noise is harmful to the inner ear. Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells (听毛细胞) in our inner ears. These cells detect (探测) sounds. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. This is what causes hearing loss.

Some people might think that their music isn't all that loud. But this can depend on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable.

What can be done to protect your hearing? Use noise-canceling (降噪) headphones. These headphones get rid of background noise. You don't need to turn up the volume as much. Keep your device volume at 50 to 60 percent. Limit daily use of headphones. Listen to sound on your mobile devices for a maximum of one hour per day.

The less loud noise you hear, the better!

1Listening to loud music causes hearing problems because_______.

A.it can stop our ears from resting

B.it puts our brains under great pressure

C.it can cause hair cells in the inner ear to die

D.it makes people get used to listening to loud sounds

2From paragraph 5, we can know_______.

A.people love to listen to loud music

B.people don't always know how loud their music is

C.it's great to listen to music on the subway

D.it's reasonable to listen to loud music in some places

3The writer probably agrees that _______.

A.people have to wear headphones while walking on a busy road

B.listening to music on TV is better for hearing than on mobile devices

C.young people should set a time limit of listening to music at loud volumes

D.wearing noise-canceling headphones can stop the outer ears being harmed
