Love Can Be Enough
When I was 11, my home burned to the ground in the middle of the night. 【1】 , my parents, brothers and I escaped (逃脱) along with our pets. We had nothing but the clothes we'd been sleeping in. I spent the rest of that summer night with my family【2】 for help. We didn't know what might lie ahead for us.
The next day, my mom brought me a few T-shirts and pairs of jeans that had been given to her by a friend. One pair of jeans was too short and the other pair was too long, but I didn't care. At least I had some clothes again. Meanwhile, my dad returned to our home to see what he could salvage (抢救). The only thing he could find was my mom's wedding ring, but it was【3】 than nothing.
As more summer【4】came, my dad was able to rent us a dusty old house by the side of the road near our old house. As we moved in, I watched as family, friends, and other people in our community donated all they could 【5】us get back on our feet. There were more clothes, furniture, food, money, and even some books for me to read.
Looking back now, I am grateful for everything we went through that summer because it taught me so much about life, love, and people. It showed me that when you have nothing left but love, that can still be enough.

21、In a modern world where time is money, how have our reading habits been influenced? Are we reading more quickly or do we prefer to read short passages? The answer perhaps lies in the kind of text you’re reading.
When we’re reading online, we read quickly to search what we want. Does this mean that as readers we now have far less patience than we used to? Not necessarily. Much of this activity is actually skimming or scanning to check whether something is useful or interesting and whether we want to read on. We’ll slow down and take a bit longer to properly read the text if the headline catches our eyes.
For those writing for an online environment, this means finding more useful ways of catching the readers’ eyes. For example, putting the key information at the very beginning make sit more likely that the time-poor website visitors will find what they want.
But what about when we’re reading literature(文学), are the rules still the same? The average reader works their way through a piece of an article at no more than about 250—300 words per minute, which is generally a page of text. If you try to read through a novel more quickly, then you start to lose a lot of what makes literature such a pleasure. When we read for pleasure, we are much less focused on picking out useful information or key words. Instead, the language itself is as important as the information mentioned. The longer you spend reading a passage, the more vivid(生动) a picture you create in your mind.
Sometimes an escape(逃离) from the fast moving Internet Age is just what we need, so maybe it’s time to slow down and lose yourself in a good book.
【1】Why do people read quickly online according to the text?
A.Because people are becoming less patient than they used to.
B.Because people think the passages on the Internet are boring.
C.Because they need to save time for printing what they want.
D.Because people want to decide whether to read on quickly.
【2】How does the writer organize Paragraph 3?
A.By giving an example.
B.By asking questions.
C.By listing numbers.
D.By showing facts.
【3】What would the writer most probably like to do?
A.Draw some pictures on the book.
B.Enjoy himself while reading slowly
C.Write an article of 250—300 words.
D.Read through a novel very quickly.
【4】Which of the following best shows the structure of the text? (P=Paragraph)
A.
B.
C.
D.
