26、Think about how much reading you do everyday. When you look at it, you might find that reading is the work-related skill that you use most often! 【1】 After all, if we can read and comprehend textbooks, then aren’t we good readers? Maybe not. Given the time that reading consumes, it may be a skill that we can and should improve.
【2】 It means getting faster and more efficient at reading, while still understanding what you’re reading. Although you spend a good part of your day reading, have you ever thought about how you read? How do your eyes make sense of the shapes of the letters, and then put those letters together to form sentences that you can understand?
Reading is quite a complex skill. It was previously believed during reading, both eyes focus on particular letters.【3】 Scientists now believe that the eyes lock onto different letters at the same time, usually two characters apart. Your brain then fuses (融合) these images together to form a word. This happens very swiftly, as we look through pages of text!
Many people read at an average rate of 250 words per minute. 【4】
Imagine, then, if you could double your rate to 500 words per minute. 【5】 You could then spend the saved time on other tasks, or take a few extra minutes to relax. Another important advantage of speed reading is that it allows one to better comprehend the overall structure of an argument. This leads to better “big picture” understanding, which can greatly benefit your work and career.
A.Recent research shows this isn’t the case.
B.Speed reading has a great many benefits.
C.You should practice to improve your reading speed.
D.But what does becoming a better reader involve?
E.You could read all of this content in half the time.
F.It’s also a skill that most of us take for granted by the time we reach age 12.
G.This means that an average page in a book or document takes 1-2 minutes to read.
27、Soft cries came from the back seat about halfway through road trip home. Allison heard her 2-year-old daughter’s voice asking: “Ruff? Ruff?” She suddenly realized her daughter’s favorite toy dog, Ruff, had been left behind at the Doubletree, a hotel in the capital. Allison said she felt terrible about forgetting her daughter Juniper’s comfort companion. As soon as the family unloaded the car that night, she called the hotel and learned that Ruff was in the lost-and-found and would be mailed to them in a day or two.
Three days later, a box arrived at the Allison’s home addressed to Juniper. Inside, next to Ruff, she found a tin of cookies, a note and some photos, which showed how Juniper’s toy dog had spent her solo vacation at the Doubletree. “Dear Juniper,” the note read, “thanks for letting us borrow Ruff for a day! Don’t worry, she didn’t work hard and we gave her plenty of playtime! Hope you and Ruff visit us again soon! Love, Doubletree Team.” The funny photos were taken by front-desk clerk Maria. The photos showed her talking on the phone, using a computer, hanging out at the hotel swimming pool and sleeping in the middle of a king-size bed.
“Juniper couldn’t stop laughing as she looked at the photos,” said Allison, who runs a photography business. “The love and care they put into doing this is unbelievable. A lot of times, when kids lose their toys or toy animals at a hotel, they might never see them again.”
She decided to write a post about the hotel’s kind deed on the Internet. 28、 Today, we complete our story about the influential English writer William Shakespeare. He wrote plays and poems during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, which remain very popular today.
During earlier times, people would probably have learned several ancient Roman and Greek plays. It was not unusual for writers to produce more current versions of these works. For example, in Shakespeare's play The Comedy of Errors Shakespeare borrowed certain details from the ancient Roman writer Plautus. For his play Macbeth, Shakespeare most likely used a work on Scottish history by Raphael Holinshed for information. Shakespeare might have borrowed from other writers, but the intensity(强度)of his imagination and language made the plays his own. While many plays by other writers of his time have been forgotten, Shakespeare and his art live on.
Shakespeare was also influenced by the world around him. He described the sights and sounds of London in his plays. His works include observations about political struggles, the fear of diseases, and the popular language of the city’s tradesmen. Shakespeare's knowledge of the English countryside is also clear. His works include descriptions of deep forests, local flowers, and the ancient popular traditions of rural people.
It would be impossible to list all of the ways in which Shakespeare’s works have influenced the world culture. But the first and greatest example would be his great influence on the English language. During his time, the English language was changing. Many new words from other languages were being added. Shakespeare used his sharp mind and poetic inventiveness to create hundreds of new words and rework old ones. For example, he created the noun forms of “critic”, “mountaineer” and “eyeball”. Many common expressions in English come from his plays, including “pomp and circumstance(装腔作势)”from Othello, “full circle(绕圈子地)” from King Lear, etc. The list of cultural creations influenced by Shakespeare is almost endless. From paintings to television to music and dance, Shakespeare was well represented. Shakespeare's plays have been translated into every major language in the world.
Shakespeare became a well-known writer during a golden age of theater. His years of hard work paid off.
【1】Why are the works of Shakespeare superior to these of other writers of his time?
A.Because he borrowed from other writers.
B.Because his rich imagination and beautiful language.
C.Because he influenced the English language greatly.
D.Because he wrote his plays by himself.
【2】Which of the following is not the reason why Shakespeare influenced the world around him?
A.He described London in his works.
B.He described English countryside clearly in his works.
C.He described the ancient traditions of rural people in his works.
D.He described the popular disease clearly in his works.
【3】What can we infer from the article?
A.Shakespeare influenced the English language greatly.
B.Shakespeare’s works are not very popular in his time.
C.Shakespeare’s success is partly due to the fact that he worked very hard.
D.Shakespeare created many expressions in his plays.
【4】What does the author want to tell us in this article?
A.William Shakespeare is an influential English writer.
B.William Shakespeare lived in a golden age of theatre.
C.William Shakespeare influenced the English language.
D.William Shakespeare is better than other writers of his time.
29、How to Respond when Someone Judges You
Dealing with judgment from other people can be tough, especially when it’s coming from a friend, family member, or colleague. Judgmental people are unavoidable, but you can easily deal with their criticism using positivity and compassion.
Rid yourself of the judgment. Remember that a judgmental person’s words are a reflection of their own beliefs-and not yours. Critical people criticize themselves more than anyone else. 【1】.
Be sympathetic. Practice sympathy to understand the source of this person’s judgment. It could be that they were judged by parents, family, or friends, in which case this person’s critical attitude would be something they learned(and not necessarily intentional). While that doesn’t excuse their behavior, having sympathy can inform your response. Say things like “【2】,” or “I see where you’re coming from, but…” when you respond to someone’s judgment.
Ask for clarification. 【3】. Ask this person to explain what they said, and find out their motivation for saying it. You could ask then, “What are you trying to say? If you have constructive criticism, I’m open to hearing it.” That way, you’re giving the other person a gentle reminder to phrase their words constructively.
【4】. Be polite but firm when you call out judgmental people. If somebody crosses a line and makes you feel criticized, tell them how you feel. If someone is giving you criticism you didn’t ask for, you could say, “【5】, and I have a plan that works for me.”
A.Stop talking like this
B.Set boundaries in the conversation
C.I understand why you feel that way
D.I feel like I need to deal with this in my way
E.I know you want to talk but this is a sensitive subject for me
F.Judgmental people may not know they’re being rude or unreasonable
G.So the judgment they pass isn’t actually about you, though it can feel personal

32、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇 60 词左右的内容概要。
Being a high school student is probably one of the hardest things in the world. From the countless classes to the endless homework, your school may seem stressful some days. So, it’s understandable if you feel under pressure sometimes.
However, by making a few changes, your high school life could become easier. First, as starters, try to build a better relationship with the most important people in your life: your parents. “To succeed, teens need love, acceptance and support from their parents,” psychologist Sara Villanueva wrote on Psychology Today website. With this in mind, try to explain your difficulties to your parents. That way, they’ll understand you better. To do this, simply talk to your parents and share your feelings with them and they may be able to help you. Having a good relationship with your teachers is important too. If you’re finding a certain class too hard, talk to your teachers and ask them for help. It’s teachers’ job to make sure their students understand what they teach, so they’ll be more than happy to help you.
And then, you also should start by helping yourself to become more successful at anything you do. To start with, set yourself some realistic goals, like “I’ll improve my math grade by next semester,” or “I’ll join one more after-school club.” And rather than just tell yourself these goals, plan them out carefully-and stick to them. You can get yourself a calendar, and mark every piece of school work you have on there, for example. That way, you can see exactly what you need to do and when you need to finish it by.
Another thing to remember, however, is that relaxation is just as important as working hard. “It is good to take time to relax during heavy periods of work to stay energized (精力充沛的) and focused,” US student Anna Pohoryles wrote on university website Odyssey. So, if things get too difficult, taking a break may be the best solution of all.
