四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、

Years passed and Dorian remained beautiful and young. From time to time, strange stories about his way of life crept through London. But he looked so innocent (无辜的) that nobody could believe anything bad of him. He often went upstairs to the locked room, opened the door with the key that never left him and stood, with a minor, in front of the portrait (画像) that Basil had painted of him. He looked at the evil and ageing face in the portrait, and then at his beautiful young face in the mirror. The contrast (对比) made him happy. He loved his good looks.

Then something happened. It was on the ninth of November, the night before Dorian Gray’s thirty-eighth birthday. It was about eleven o’clock. Dorian was walking home when a man passed him in the fog. Dorian recognized (认出) the man. It was Basil Hallward. A strange feeling of fear came over him. He walked on, but Basil recognized him.

“Dorian! This is lucky! I’ve just come from your house. I’m going to Paris on the midnight train, and I wanted to see you before I leave. Didn’t you recognize me? ”

“Not in this fog, Dorian replied.” I can’t even recognize my house.

“I’m sorry you’re going away. Will you be back soon? ”

“No, I’m going to be away for six months. Well, here we are at your door. Let me come in for a moment I need to talk to you.”

“Of course, but won’t you miss your train? ” asked Dorian as he walked up the steps and opened the door.

“I’ve got plenty of time,” he answered. Fie train won’t leave till twelve fifteen, and it’s only eleven.”

Dorian looked at him and smiled, “Come in.”

【1】What happened to Dorian according to Paragraph 1?

【4】Which of the following is RIGHT about Basil Hallward?

  • 25、Do you know why different animals or pests(害虫)have their special colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.

Some birds like eating locusts, but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colours of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.

If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of colouring is protecting themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be seen by hunters. This is because they have the colours much like the tree.

Have you ever noticed an even more strange act? A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over, the enemies cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it isn’t strong at all.

【1】From the passage we can learn that locusts _______.

    A. are small animals

    B. are easily found by birds

    C. are dangerous to their enemies

    D. change their colours to protect themselves

2Bears and lions can keep safe because they_______.

    A. have the colours much like the trees

    B. move quickly

    C. like brown and grey colours

    D. live in forests

3 Why can the fish mentioned in the last paragraph live up to now?

    A. Because it is very strong.

    B. Because the liquid it sends out can help it get away from its enemies.

    C. Because the liquid it sends out can kill its enemies.

    D. Because it swims faster than any other fish.

4Which is the best title for this passage?

    A. The Change of Colours for Animals and Pests

    B. Colours of Different Animals and Pests

    C. The Main Use of Colours for Animals and Pests

    D. Some Animals and Pests

  • 26、Should we be afraid of sharks? Maybe not. Some scientists do some research about the causes of shark attacks(袭击)and say that sharks don’t like the taste of humans! In fact, most people who were attacked didn’t die. They usually received only one bite(咬伤). Why is this?

There are many explanations(解释)of why sharks sometimes attack people. One is that sharks are just curious.

We know that sharks are the strongest animals in their environment, so they are not afraid of anything. It means they are curious when they see something unusual. Because they don’t have hands or feet, the only way they can learn about an object is to bite it. It is thought that sharks sometimes bite humans for this reason, and then swim away.

Scientists also say that sharks don’t want to waste energy trying to eat a human, because we have a lot of bones(骨头). It is hard for a shark to eat us because sharks don’t have hands, and they can’t pull the meat off our bones. Maybe that’s why they only bite us once.

Another guess is that sharks attack humans by mistake. Some sharks, such as the great white sharks, may sometimes mistake humans for a seal(海豹). People lying on the sea looks like seals when seen from below. Sharks like seals because they are fat and delicious.

No matter why shark attacks on humans, sharks should be afraid of us. Sadly, we kill almost 40 million of them each year.

【1】The underlined word “curious” means “______” in Chinese.

    A.好奇的

    B.恐惧的

    C.激动的

【2】What might sharks think of humans?

    A.Friendly.

    B.Strong.

    C.Not delicious.

    D.Convenient to eat.

【3】Why does the writer say sharks should be afraid of humans?

A.Because humans have hands and feet.

B.Because many sharks are killed by humans.

C.Because their living environment is polluted by humans.

D.Because there are more humans than sharks in the world.

【4】What would the author write the passage mainly for?

A.To tell surfers to stay away from sharks.

B.To ask people to stop killing sharks.

C.To let us know the reasons for shark attacks on people.

D.To show that humans are much stronger than sharks.
