To: Aggie@ yahoo. com From: Joe@heinfo.Net Subject: Help! Date: 21/ 10/ 2006 10:02 a. m. |
Dear Aunt Aggie,
I’m having a problem with my classmate, Rena, at school. The other day I wrote an e-mail to another classmate, Beth, in which I said some things about Rena that perhaps weren’t very nice. Unluckily, when Beth was writing back to me, she accidentally forwarded(无意间转发)the message to Rena! Now Rena is really angry with me and won’t talk to me, and Beth is unhappy as well. She’s said sorry to me a hundred times already, but the harm is done. I feel bad, because I never would have said those things to Rena’s face, but how can I get her to forgive(谅解)me? What should I do?
Joe
To: Joe@ heinfo. net From: Aggie@ yahoo. com Subject: Some advice Date: 22/ 10/ 2006 10:45 a. m. |
Dear Joe,
This problem is more common than you might think! E-mail is very useful, but also very dangerous, as you don’t know where your message might end up! First of all, you should say sorry right away to Rena. Explain that it was a mistake, and that you didn’t mean to hurt her feelings. It may take time for her to be able to forgive you, but that’s up to her. Then you might want to do something nice for her. Perhaps send her some flowers to show that you’re truly sorry. Also, you should remember that old saying: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. ” And good luck!
Aggie

B. He asked Beth what he should do.
C. He emailed Aunt Aggie for help.
D. He said sorry to Rena face to face.
【3】What does the underline sentence mean in the second e-mail?
It means “______.”
A. because you don’t know who the e-mail is for
B. because you can never know who will get your e-mail at last
C. because you don’t know where your e-mail was written
D. because you never know where the message is from
【4】What advice did Aggie give Joe?
A. Joe, Beth and Rena should have a talk together.

25、Is your TV connected to the Internet? What about your chair, or your fridge? Probably they are not. But in the future, most things in your home may be connected, thanks to the so-called “Internet of things”.
The Internet of things may be coming sooner than you think. Earlier this year, Samsung CEO spent a lot of time talking about the Internet things. He said that four years from now, every Samsung product will be part of the Internet of things, no matter whether it’s a remote control or a washing machine.
So, how do household objects that are part of the Internet of things work? Well, think of a common chair. When connected to the Internet, the chair warms up when it knows the user has just walked into the room and is feeling cold.
An Internet-connected camera could help people feel safer in their homes. It can know people’s faces and has an infrared sensor(红外传感器), so even if it’s dark it can see when someone passes by and send you a message on your smartphone to let you know who’s there. If the person is someone you don’t know, it can tell you that, too.
But according to MIT Technology Review, whether companies are connecting dog food bowls or security(安全)systems to the Internet, there may be some problems. For example, many early connected-home objects don’t have much built-in security, which means they could be hacked. Moreover, it could be difficult to get these new machines to work together especially when they are made by different companies. To fight this, many companies have joined the Open Interconnect Consortium, which had 45 members by late 2015.
So, picture this: you enter your home. The temperature changes to make you feel comfortable. Your favorite music starts playing for you. Do you think that this would be a good thing? It may happen sooner than you think.

You let it be and the water became clean on its own. It is also the same with your mind. When it is disturbed(打扰), just let it be, and it will calm down on its own.”

27、 What will you do if you come across an English word or phrase you don't know? You'd probably look it up in the dictionary, wouldn't you? This, however, was not the case. Although English has a history of over 2,500 years, the first English dictionary didn't appear until the 17th century.
During the 16th century, Europe saw rich developments in science, medicine and arts. People had to "invent" words to express new ideas. Many new English words were borrowed from foreign language. There was also a renewed interest in ancient languages. Some new English words had roots(根)in languages like Latin and Hebrew.
The general public, however, had difficulty understanding these new words. At that time few girls would go to school. Only rich parents were able to afford professional teachers. Robert Cawdrey, an English schoolteacher, wanted to help. In 1604, he published A Table Alphabetical in London. Cawdrey hoped his dictionary would be able to help more people learn to read and write properly.
But Cawdrey's dictionary was not very dependable. The fist edition had only 120 pages. There were only 2,543 words in it. As Cawdrey's focus was on words "hard for the general public," many common words were not included. And for many words, the explanations(解释)were unclear. Take "loaf" as an example. It explained, "A piece of bread." While in today's dictionary, it reads, "A shaped mass of baked bread that is usually sliced before eating." For some words, Cawdrey used only one word to explain each of them. This made A Table Alphabetical more like a book of synonyms(同义词)than a real dictionary. While readers could check the spelling of some words using the book, they had no way of finding out what these words actually meant.
Although Cawdrey's dictionary had many problems, it was quite popular. As the saying goes, ________." In the year of 1604, people finally had something to help them read more easily!

A.Practice makes perfect. B.Where there's life, there's hope.
