25、The tourist trade is booming. With all this coming and going, you’d expect greater understanding to develop between the nations of the world. Not a bit of it! Superb systems of communication by air, sea and land make it possible for us to visit each other’s countries at a moderate cost. What was once the “grand tour’’, reserved for only the very rich, is now within everybody’s grasp. The package tour and chartered flights are not to be sneered at. Modern travelers enjoy a level of comfort which the lords and ladies on grand tours in the old days couldn’t have dreamed of. But what’s the sense of this mass exchange of populations if the nations of the world remain basically ignorant of each other?
Many tourist organizations are directly responsible for this state of affairs. They deliberately set out to protect their clients from too much contact with the local population. The modern tourist leads a cosseted, sheltered life. He lives at international hotels where he eats his international food and sips his international drink while he gazes at the natives from a distance. Conducted tours to places of interest are carefully censored. The tourist is allowed to see only what the organizers want him to see and no more. A strict schedule makes it impossible for the tourist to wander off on his own; and anyway, language is always a barrier, so he is only too happy to be protected in this way.
The sad thing about this situation is that it leads to the persistence of national stereotypes. We don’t see the people of other nations as they really are, but as we have been brought up to believe they are. You can test this for yourself. Take five nationalities, say, French, German, English, American and Italian. Now in your mind, match them with these five adjectives: musical, amorous, cold, pedantic, native. Far from providing us with any insight into the national characteristics of the peoples just mentioned, these adjectives actually act as barriers. So when you set out on your travels, the only characteristics you notice are those which confirm your preconceptions. You come away with the highly unoriginal and inaccurate impression that, say, “Anglo-Saxons are hypocrites’’ of that “Latin peoples shout a lot’’. You only have to make a few foreign friends to understand how absurd and harmful national stereotypes are. But how can you make foreign friends when the tourist trade does its best to prevent you?
Carried to an extreme, stereotypes can be positively dangerous. Wild generalizations stir up racial hatred and blind us to the basic fact—how trite it sounds! That all people are human. We are all similar to each other and at the same time all unique.
【1】What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Tourism contributes nothing to increasing understanding between nations.
B.The stereotypes of people lead to racism.
C.Conducted tour is dull.
D.Tourism has developed at a fast pace.
【2】What is the author’s attitude toward tourism?

【4】The purpose of the writer is to________.
A.inform us of the possible ways to travel
B.persuade us to change the way of travelling
C.entertain us with some travel adventures
D.suggest an alternative of enhancing the understanding between nations

A.It is still very expensive.
B.It’s still tiring and uncomfortable.
C.Package tour made it less attractive.
D.Everybody can enjoy the “grand tour”.
26、The expression “down to earth” means being open and honest. It is easy to get on with someone who is down to earth. A down-to-earth person is the opposite of someone who are important (自负的) or proud.
Down-to-earth people could be important members of society. But they do not consider themselves to be better than others who are less important. While a person who is filled with his own importance and pride is said to have his nose in the air.
Americans use another expression that is similar in some ways to down to earth. The expression is both feet on the ground. Someone with both feet on the ground is a person with a good understanding of reality.
He may have dreams, but he does not allow them to have influence on his understanding of what is real. The opposite kind of person is one who has his head in the clouds. Someone with his head in the clouds is a person whose mind is not on what is happening in real life. Such a person may be called a day-dreamer.
When we have both our feet on the ground, and when we are down to earth, we do not have our noses in the air. We act honestly and openly to others. Our lives are like the ground below us-solid and strong.
【1】A down-to-earth person could be ________.

C.real and important
D.strong and changeable

A.the use of some expressions
B.dreams and achievements
C.the lifestyle of honest people
D.honesty and understanding
27、 A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly. The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.
“It’s extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just the sum of a bunch of individual components (元件),” said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. A few years ago, his team got the go-ahead to start piecing together the components. “The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of those components are off the shelf (现货供应) and so we have to develop them all on our own,” he said.
They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependencie(相互依赖) on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it’s connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation (计算), sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured.
While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off-board (外置的) power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source, so that it might someday perform data-gathering work at rescue sites, in farmers’ fields or on the battlefield. “Basically it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he said.
Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day-to-day basis.”
【1】The difficulty the team of engineers met with while making the robotic fly was that ______.
A.they had no model in their mind B.they did not have enough time
C.they had no ready-made components D.they could not control flight tasks
【2】It can be inferred from paragraphs 3 and 4 that the robotic fly ______.
A.consists of a flight device and a control system
B.can just fly in limited areas at the present time
C.can collect information from many sources now
D.has been put into wide application
【3】Which of the following can be learned from the passage?
A.The robotic flyer is designed to learn about insects.
B.Animals are not allowed in biological experiments.
C.There used to be few ways to study how insects fly.
D.Wood’s design can replace animals in some experiments.
【4】Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.Father of Robotic Fly B.Inspiration from Engineering Science
C.Robotic Fly Imitates Real Life Insect D.Harvard Breaks Through in Insect Study

Technology is a double-edged sword (双刃剑). Liu Haoxuan, 13, used to spend all of his free time on his mobile phone. As a result, his ________ went down and he often failed the exams. Although Liu has dropped his addiction (瘾), he still feels lost. “It’s like something is ________ without my phone,” he said. Smartphones can make our lives more convenient, but they can also cause ________ for people like Liu who has no self-control (自控力).
Some schools have set ________ rules to stop students from using their smartphones too much. However, Sun Zhenyao, a 14-year-old boy, thinks smartphones are ________ in students’ lives. “In my class, students are asked to upload (上传) their math homework on Dingding. We can’t ________ the task without it.” Sun said.
Maybe the best way to solve the problem is to teach kids to use their smartphones ________. For example, Liu and his classmates have agreed to ________ their phones while studying and ask their parents before using them. More importantly, “real world” activities like painting, hiking and riding bikes can make students ________ about their smartphone. So schools and parents can have more ________ for kids to enjoy rather than just ban (禁止) smartphones.
