二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   There were many beautiful buildings in ancient Rome, but the living conditions for ordinary people were bad. Most of their homes were so poorly made that they fell down or were fire hazards (danger) with their steep, narrow wooden stairways. Most people were packed into apartment buildings that rose shakily (unsafely) six to twelve floors above the ground. The apartments were rooms about three metres square, and each building housed about five hundred people.

These tall buildings faced each other across streets only three metres wide, so no sunlight reached the ground. Even so, apartments were costly, though cheaper places could be found outside Rome. But people wanted to be near their work and entertainment. So the streets became crowded and it was hard to move quickly. At night, the streets were filled with noise as food and supplies were brought into the city on wagons and carts.

1In ancient Rome, most people lived in ________ apartments.

A.small and crowded B.clean and tidy

C.spacious and sunny D.tall and big

2The streets in ancient Rome were ________.

A.crowded and noisy B.wide and bright

    C.narrow and dark D.both A and C

3People liked to live in Rome because________.

    A.the apartments were comfortable

    B.the living expenses were low

C.they have no money to build houses outside the city

D.they wanted to enjoy the conveniences of the city

4This passage is mainly about ________ in ancient Rome.

    A.the beautiful buildings

B.the living conditions of ordinary people

    C.the streets and transportation

    D.the food and daily supplies

  • 27、   Few people can resist the lure (诱惑) of a delicious ice cream, especially on a hot day. The only thing that spoils the fun is that the treat is hard to enjoy slowly, often ending up with a sticky melted mess. Now, researchers from Colombia's Pontificia Bolivariana University may have found an unlikely partner to help solve this age-old problem---cellulose fiber(纤维素) extracted from banana plant waste. Bananas, as you probably know, grow in bunches on a tree-like plant. Each bunch is attached to a central stalk, called a rachis(叶轴), which is thrown once the fruit has been harvested. The team, led by Dr. Robin Zuluaga Gallego, began extracting cellulose nanofibrils (CNFS) from powdered rachis. The tasteless, odorless macro fibers, thousands of times smaller than the width of a human hair were then added in various concentrations to 100 grams of ice cream mix.

With the right amount of CNFS mixed in, the dessert lasted longer in its frozen state than conventional ice cream, extending both its shelf life and the amount of time the treat can be enjoyed. Even more exciting was that the fibers increased the stickiness of low-fat ice cream to levels higher than the full-fat one. Since this is what determines the frozen treats’ creaminess and texture, CNFS could help create healthier ice cream without compromising on taste.

The researchers, who presented their findings at the American Chemical Society (ACS) meeting in New Orleans on March 21, 2018, next plan to investigate how different types of fat, such as coconut oil, affect the behavior of CNFS in other frozen treats.

The Colombian researchers are not the only one working on creating a slower-melting ice cream. In 2015, scientists at the University of Dundee in Scotland found that a naturally occurring protein called BSIA(Bacterial Surface Layer A) was remarkably effective in keeping the treat frozen for longer periods of time. With both teams competing to be the first to get to market, the future of everyone’s favorite dessert certainly looks promising.

1What prevents people enjoying an ice cream slowly?

    A.The hot weather.

B.A kind of fiber from banana.

    C.The ice creams’ stickiness.

    D.The ice creams’ quick melting.

2Which is NOT a benefit of CNFS added to ice cream mix?

    A.To improve its flavor.

    B.To make it more healthy.

    C.To reduce its fat content.

D.To make it melt more slowly.

3What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.CNFS are more useful and effective than BSLA.

B.Ice cream with BSLA has been on sale at the market.

C.Slowly enjoying an ice cream will soon become a reality.

D.The Colombian research team has taken the lead in the competition with the Scottish team.

4What's the author’s attitude towards the finding of CNFS?

    A.Positive B.Casual

    C.Defensive D.Suspicious.

  • 29、   I was taking a memory test while lying inside an MRI scanner to see whether the brains of memory champions like me were different from anyone else’s.

When the results were published, the findings were very positive. 1 Instead, what set us apart was what we did when were learning ---- in particular, the way we used pictures, and put our “mind’s eye” to work.

Everyone can get more from their memory. Any formation can be turned into imagery ---- immediately switching on parts of the brain that create rich, multi-layered memories.

Try it yourself. Here’s a list of random words ---- just the sort of information that’s used to test would-be memory champions. 2 Picture them, as vividly as you can.

    MOUNTAIN, TAINBOW, PEA, SOFA,

    SHEEP, SNOWMAN, WINDMILL,

    NEWSPAPER, PIANO, UMBRELLA

As images, rather than words, these items will stay longer in your short-term memory.  3 you’ll boost your chances of achieving even longer-term learning.

Fire up your visual memory and get your brain buzzing. Notice the relative sizes of the items on the list. Look out for any similarities or differences in shapes, colours or textures. And ask yourself if any of the words fall into obvious pairs or patterns.

4  Then, start attaching images to information you want to remember: shopping lists, addresses, brilliant ideas. By doing so, you’ll find that you soon become more observant, better with details, and more confident about recalling the things that matter.

5  and use pictures to help you to set some new “personal bests” for your own memory power!

A.But don’t just read the words.

    B.So learn from the champions,

C.And by letting your brain engage with them in new ways,

D.There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term.

E.After a few minutes, cover the page and see how many words you recall.

F.Thus, remembering can be thought of as an act of creative reimagination.

G.Expert memorisers didn’t have any physical differences between our ears.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?

Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 1 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

In fact, planes 2 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.

When a 3 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 4, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 5 process.

Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 6.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 7, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 8. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 9, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.

But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 10 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

A class pet can be an invaluable experience for elementary school children. The pet can teach responsibility, build a connection to the classroom, serve as a motivator, and be something for the children to love. If the teacher is willing to take on the added responsibility of caring for an animal in addition to all of the children in the classroom, a class pet can be a wonderful addition to a class.

Many factors need to be taken into consideration when choosing a class pet. It cannot be too big, as classrooms generally have limited space. Cost should also be considered since the teacher will likely have to pay for the pet, its food and its habitat. It must also be somewhat hardy (耐寒的). Each particular type of animal has its advantages and disadvantages, and a teacher must weigh these and make a decision about which one is right for his or her class.

Birds are physically more delicate (娇养) than many other animals. They will not survive in drafts (气流) and need a somewhat regulated temperature in their environment. Many birds are quite social and do best with other birds or when being handled routinely by people who can be appropriate with them. Young children are not likely to have the skill to handle a bird without harming it, making it a poor choice for a class pet.

Some reptiles are beautiful to look at but are delicate, afraid of cold, light sensitivity or poisonous and shouldn’t be handled by children. Others are more hardy but require expensive habitats. Most snakes eat rats and mice, which may be a frightening thing for small children to witness.

A hardy fish, such as a betta, is a good low-cost option for a class pet. They are obviously not huggable or able to be caught by children. Besides, they are inexpensive, have relatively long life spans, and can be kept in a simple fish bowl.
