二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Are we in the middle of a workplace revolution?

Pool tables, nap-pods and free food. They sound like things at an all-inclusive hoilday resort(度假胜地) rather than in an office. However, digital tech companies have redesigned the office and provided unusual benefits to make the workplace a more pleasant and productive place to be. For these companies, the days of individual work area where people would work on their own for eight hours a day are no more.

This trend is now spreading outside Silicon Valley. Bob Randell, director of MiCareer, says, “Everyone’s realizing that tech companies don’t provide fancy benefits or games areas in order to seem cool and trendy. They want their staff to feel good about themselves and their jobs. Happy employees are less likely to leave to work for a competitor and, most importantly, they are more productive.”

This new kind of workplace also encourages people to cooperate and to be creative. Playing table tennis with league you rarely work with can lead to new ways of working and fresh thinking. Thinking over a problem while lying in a hammock(吊床) might be the best way to find its solution.

However, this doesn’t mean employers should immediately offer free ice cream, replace desks with sofas or let staff bring pets to work. “Firms have to make sure their benefits are of real interest to their employees, and that they can afford them for the long term.' If a company stops offering a benefit, staff happiness goes down and people are less satisfied,” says Anna Tang, head of HR at DigitalFore.

We advise our managers to monitor the effects of the benefits carefully. We now offer free breakfasts instead of free lunches. This persuades people to arrive early and to start work with good energy levels, which makes them more productive. Large free lunches just made them feel sleepy.

This revolution in the workplace is unlikely to slow down. As Randell says, “All businesses can improve by increasing creativity, cooperation and happiness at work. The most successful ones do exactly that, and which companies don't want to be successful?”

1What trend is spreading among tech companies?

A.Expanding businesses outside Silicon Valley. B.Improving managers' working conditions.

C.Bettering workplaces for employees. D.Reducing daily working hours.

2Which is the major advantage of the workplace revolution?

    A.Stopping people leaving their jobs.

    B.Increasing people' s productivity.

C.Attracting high quality people to the company.

D.Encouraging sharing ideas with different people.

3What should companies that intend to improve do?

A.Serve the staff once and for all. B.Keep offering short-term returns.

C.Control the costs of extra expenses. D.Provide benefits for employees really

4Which of the following might be the best subtitle?

A.Why office life is changing and how to manage it

B.Why workplace revolution is unlikely to take place

C.Why digital technology companies are so successful

D.Why modern offices and unusual benefits are bad for business

  • 22、Searching Venus’ sky

From the moon to Mars, scientists have been hunting for alien life in the solar system for decades.

However, Venus was not regarded as an ideal place because of its hot temperature and dry atmosphere.

But a recent discovery of traces of a gas in the clouds of Venus has excited astronomers, as it may serve as a potential sign of life.

On Sept 14, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada announced that scientists have detected phosphine(磷化氢) in the clouds of Venus. Phosphine is a colorless, toxic(有毒的)gas that has an odor of garlic. Though toxic, it is viewed as a possible sign of life because on Earth the gas is made by microorganisms that live in oxygen-free environments.

“I was very surprised - stunned, in fact,” astronomer Jane Greaves of Cardiff University in Wales and lead author of the research, told MSN. “There is a chance that we have detected some kind of living organism in the clouds of Venus.”

This layer of clouds is about 48 kilometers above the Venus surface, with its temperature ranging from 30 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit (about -1 to 93℃). Scientists have speculated that if life exists on Venus, this cloud deck(云盖)is likely the only place where it would survive.

Scientists went through every possibility that could have led to the formation of phosphine gas in Venus’ clouds, including volcanoes, lightning strikes, small meteorites(陨石)falling into the atmosphere. But they ruled all of them out. It was concluded that there is no explanation for the existence of this gas in Venus’ clouds, other than the presence of life, USA Today reported.

Although the detection of phosphine is not robust(强有力的)evidence for life, this finding is great enough to change scientists’ view on Venus, which is thought to be a completely inhospitable planet.

What signs of life we looking for?

    1. Liquid water: It can dissolve a huge range of molecules needed for life and facilitate their chemical reactions.

    2. Mild temperatures: Temperatures higher than 122 C will destroy most complex organic molecules, and make it almost impossible for carbon-based life to form.

【1】What is the text mainly about?

A.A newly detected gas may indicate possible existence of life on Venus.

B.Scientists found the most hospitable place on Venus.

C.The environment on Venue changed in favor of life.

D.Phosphine formed on Venus means alien life is present.

【2】What can we learn about phosphine from the text?

A.It has no smell at all.

    B.It only exists on Venus.

C.It can be produced by microorganisms.

D.It is a sign of the existence of oxygen.

【3】What can we infer from paragraphs 5 and 6?

A.Various living organisms have been detected on Venus.

B.The higher the cloud is above Venus, the warmer it is.

C.The cloud deck is rich in phosphine.

D.If life exists on Venus, it is likely in the cloud deck.

【4】What did scientists conclude about the phosphine gas detected on Venus?

A.It could be formed as a result of the falling of meteorites.

B.It could be a sign that there is life in Venus’ clouds.

C.It could be caused by volcanoes and lighting strikes.

D.It proves that Venus is another hospitable planet.

  • 23、By CUI JIA | China Daily | Updated: 2022-02-12 Snowboarding pioneer Shaun White took his final bow at the bottom of the halfpipe course (U型槽) at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games on Friday, officially marking the end of his long and storied career as a professional snowboarder. No matter how hard the 35-year-old tried to hold back his emotions, it just got to be too much.

Although he wanted to do his best by performing two 1440s during his final run, he fell while attempting his second double cork 1440. Despite the fall, everyone cheered for the snowboarding legend at Genting Snow Park in Zhangjiakou as he stood back up and continued down the halfpipe. “Siding on my back, I was thinking, this isn’t how I wanted it to go.You don’t always get what you want, but I have to be thankful for everything I do have and what I have gotten in my career and that’s why I’m very emotional. I can’t believe it’s over. It’s wild,” said White, who finished in fourth place.

From a young age, snowboarding was what White wanted to do more than anything. At 19, White took part in his first Winter Olympics in Turin in 2006 and scored gold. The victory changed his life forever and he became the sport’s global superstar.

Meanwhile, he continued to push his limits by landing the first double cork in halfpipe and inventing the double McTwist 1260. Those tricks brought him three Olympic gold medals, as well as injuries, including the brutal (残酷的) crash in 2018 when he slammed his head against the top of a superpipe, leading to 62 stitches (缝合) in his face in the lead-up to the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.

“T’m not competing’ doesn’t mean I won’t be here at the next Winter Olympics cheering on all my friends,” he said. “The future for me is so exciting. There is so much to do and so much to live for. This is just the beginning for me.”

【1】What did White feel when he finished the competition?

A.He was worried about his future.

B.He was proud of his professional career.

C.He was doubtful about the result of the competition.

D.He was satisfied with what he had done in the competition.

【2】Why does the author mention White’s serious injuries in paragraph 4?

    A.To explain why he retired.

B.To describe the rules of snowboarding.

C.To show the hardship before his success.

D.To warn about the possible risks of snowboarding.

【3】What can be inferred about Shaun White from the last paragraph?

A.He will compete in the next Winter Olympics.

B.He will continue to contribute to the ice-snow sports.

C.He won’t talk about his early achievements any more.

D.He will try his best to make more friends in the future.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Final Performance

    B.Emotional Goodbye

C.How to Be a Great Snowboarder

    D.Snowboarding-the World’s Most Dangerous Sport

  • 24、   Across Britain, burnt toast will be served to mothers in bed this morning as older sons and daughters rush to deliver their supermarket bunches of flowers. But,according to a new study,we should be placing a higher value on motherhood all year.

Mothers have long known that their home workload was just as heavy as paid work. Now,the new study has shown that if they were paid for their parental labours, they would earn as much as 172,000 a year.

The study looked at the range of jobs mothers do,as well as the hours they are working,to determine the figure. This would make their yearly income 30,000 more than the Prime Minister earns.

By analysing the numbers,it found the average mother works 119 hours a week,40 of which would usually be paid at a standard rate and 79 hours as overtime. After questioning 1,000 mothers with children under 18,it found that,on most days, mums started their routine work at 7am and finished at around 11pm.

To calculate just how much mothers would earn from that labour,it suggested some of the roles that mums could take on,including housekeeper,part-time lawyer, personal trainer and entertainer.Being a part-time lawyer,at 48.98 an hour, would prove to be the most profitable of the“mum jobs”,with psychologist(心理学家)a close second.

It also asked mothers about the challenges they face, with 80 per cent making emotional(情感的)demand as the hardest thing about motherhood.

Over a third of mums felt they needed more training and around half said they missed going out with friends.

The study shows mothers matter all year long and not just on Mother’s Day.The emotional, physical and mental energy mothers devote to their children can be never-ending,but children are also sources of great joy and happiness.Investing(投入)in time for parenting and raising relationships is money well spent.

1How much would a mother earn a year if working as the Prime Minister?

    A.30,000. B.142,000. C.172,000. D.202,000.

2The biggest challenge for most mothers is from______.

A.emotional demand B.low pay for work C.heavy workload D.lack of training

3What is stressed in the last paragraph?

A.Mothers’ importance shows in family all year long.

B.The sacrifices mothers make are huge but worthwhile.

C.Mothers’ devotion to children can hardly be calculated.

D.Investing time in parenting would bring a financial return.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was a break time at the village school. The bell had rung, and the children had run out into the bright sunshine, wild with laughter and fun. They chased after each other and played heartily, with giggles lingering in the relaxing atmosphere.

All but poor Davy. He came out last and very slowly, but he did not laugh. He was in trouble, and the bright, golden sunlight did not make him glad.

He walked across the yard, and sat down on a stone behind the old maple. A little bird on the highest branch sang just to make him laugh.

But Davy did not notice it. He was thinking of the cruel words that had been said about his ragged clothes. The tears stole out of his eyes, and ran down his cheeks. He closed his eyes to hold back his tears and bit his lips tight.

Poor Davy had no father, and his mother had to work hard to keep him at school. The bell finally rang, indicating it’s time to come home.

At four o’clock that afternoon, he went home by the path that led across the fields and through the woods. He still felt sad. Davy did not wish to trouble his mother; so he wandered a while among the trees, and at last threw himself on the green moss (苔藓) under them.

Just then his teacher came along. She saw who it was, and stopped, saying kindly, “What is the matter, Davy?”

He drooped his head and did not utter a word, but the tears began again to well up.

“Won’t you tell me? Perhaps I can help you.”

Deeply encouraged by her warmth and sincerity, he poured out all his trouble he came across. When he ended, she was lost in deep thought and for a while she came up, gave Davy a consoling pat and said, cheerily, “I have a plan, Davy, that I think will help you.”

“Oh, what is it?” he said, sitting up with a look of hope, while a tear fell upon a blue violet (紫罗兰).

“Well, how would you like to be a little flower merchant?”
