21、We know from research that putting pen to paper has many benefits that can support wellness in this time of digital overload. It has been scientifically proven to reduce anxiety, lift your mood and strengthen your immune system. 【1】 Close your laptop, grab a notebook and pen, open to a blank page, and write down whatever comes to mind.
I’ve been journaling for more than 25 years. When I write by hand, I release feelings and emotions that roll down the tip of the pen and onto the page. Turns out that the art of formatting each letter on the page helps you better keep the information you are recording. 【2】
【3】 There’s no need to worry about the device I am working on being charged up, or being distracted away from the very thing I am working on with the endless noise of incoming messages, or getting the required signal from the Internet.
One weekend, I sat for over an hour and hand wrote three birthday cards. I found myself lost in the writing space and totally engaged in the hand-lettering design that I created on the envelopes. 【4】That was a sharp contrast to the concentration of multitasking. Writing by hand builds your creative muscles, which don’t get stimulated in the same impactful way when you work on a keyboard.
The wise words of Nancy Olson show the benefits of writing by hand: “【5】 It transports us to unexpected places, on wings that require only a small amount of ink to keep them high, destination unknown. And in the process, the mindfulness that writing creates encourages calm and creativity.”
A.So why not give writing by hand a try?
B.Perhaps this is the true magic of the pen.
C.It can also help you organize the thoughts.
D.The act of journaling takes many people offline.
E.The power of focus in that moment was charming.
F.Writing spaces, no matter how short, are like a mindfulness.
G.I love the directness of putting pen to paper without being interrupted.
22、 Financial regulations in Britain have imposed a rather unusual rule on the bosses of big banks. Starting next year, any guaranteed bonus of top executives could be delayed 10 years if their banks are under investigation for wrongdoing. The main purpose of this “clawback” rule is to hold bankers responsible for harmful risk-taking and to restore public trust in financial institution. Yet officials also hope for a much larger benefit: more long-term decision-making not only by banks but also by all corporations, to build a stronger economy for future generations.
“Short-termism” or the desire for quick profits, has worsened in publicly traded companies, says the Bank of England’s top economist, Andrew Haldane. He quotes a giant of classical economies, Alfred Marshall, in describing this financial impatience as acting like “Children who pick the strawberries out of their pudding to eat them at once” rather than putting them aside to be eaten last.
The average time for holding a stock in both the United States and Britain, he notes, has dropped from seven years to seven months in recent decades. Transient(短期的) investors, who demand high quarterly profits from companies, can hold back a firm’s efforts to invest in long-term research or to build up customer loyalty. This has been called “quarterly capitalism”.
In addition, new digital technologies have allowed more rapid trading of equities( 股 票 ), quicker use of information, and thus shortens attention spans in financial markets. “There seems to be an advantage of short-term thinking at the expense of long-term investing,” said Commissioner Daniel Gallagher of the US Securities and Exchange Commission in speech this week.
In the US, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 has pushed most public companies to delay performance bonuses for senior executives by about a year, slightly helping reduce “short-termism.” In its latest survey of CEO pay, The Wall Street Journal finds that “a substantial part” of executive pay is now tied to performance.
Much more could be done to encourage “long-termism,” such as changes in the tax code and quicker disclosure(披露) of stock acquisitions. In France, shareholders who hold onto a company investment for at least two years can sometimes earn more voting rights in a company.
Within companies, the right compensation design can provide motivation for executives to think beyond their own time at the company and on behalf of all shareholders. Britain’s new rule is a reminder to bankers that society has an interest in their performance, not just for the short term but for the long term.
【1】According to Paragraph 1, one reason for imposing the new rule is the _______.
A.enhance banker’s sense of responsibility
B.help corporations achieve larger profits
C.build a new system of financial regulation
D.guarantee the bonuses of top executives
【2】It is argued that the influence of transient investment on public companies can be _______.
A.indirect B.negative
C.favorable D.temporary
【3】The US and France examples in paragraphs 5 and 6 are used to illustrate_______.
A.the obstacles to preventing “short-termism”.
B.the significance of long-term thinking.
C.the approaches to promoting “long-termism”
D.the popularity of short-term thinking.
【4】Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Failure of Quarterly Capitalism
B.Patience as a Corporate Virtue
C.Decisiveness Required of Top Executives
D.Frustration of Risk-taking Bankers
23、 When studying English, it’s best to focus on the big picture. Trying to improve your speaking? Aim for fluency and “standard” pronunciation. Want to get better at writing? Practice vocabulary and grammar.
But this way of learning, though necessary, misses one big thing: all the differences there are in how different people speak English. For example, people from the US and the UK speak very differently. If a British friend invited me to eat lunch at his apartment, he might say: “Come over to mine ‘round 12 pm’.”
But if I invited him over, I might say: “Be at my place a little after 12.” “My place” is more commonly used in the US; “mine” is more frequently used in the UK – both are informal ways of saying “my house” or “my apartment”.
Even people in different parts of the US speak very differently. For example, imagine that you are talking to a group of people and want to address them all at once. What pronoun do you use? “You”, you should reply — that’s the correct pronoun whether you’re addressingone person or a group.
But using “you” to address multiple people feels strange in conversation, so speakers find ways around it. The most common choice around the US is to say “you guys”. But working class natives of my hometown, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, say “yinz”: as in, “yinz wanna go to the bar later to watch the game?” In eastern Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey, some people say “youse”: as in, “youse are always hanging out in the street”. In the southern US, people say “y’all”: as in, “don’t forget about us, y’all!”
The point is, there’s a lot more to languages than what’s standard and proper. So take a tour around the US, y’all. Yinz will be glad that youse did it.
【1】Which aspect of language learning does the author specifically focus on in the article?
A.The reason why we need to practice standard pronunciation.
B.How to learn from native speakers.
C.How to see the big picture when speaking English.
D.The different ways native speakers use the language.
【2】The underlined word “addressing” in Paragraph 4 probably means ______.
A.turning to.
B.dealing with.
C.speaking to.
D.sending a letter to.
【3】If someone greets you and your family by saying “It’s good seein’ y’all!”, he is likely from ______.
A.the southern US.
B.Pennsylvania.
C.New York.
D.New Jersey.
24、How to deal with silent treatment?
Is someone you know giving you the silent treatment? Maybe you did something wrong: you embarrassed or humiliated the other person; You let them down or failed to give them your support when they needed it.【1】.
Be clear about what happened
You probably already know what it was that you said or did.【2】. You could say, “ I feel like there’s a problem between us and that you might be upset with me.” If you do know what happened between you to cause this gap, ask if you can talk.
【3】
Explain that you know what happened between you wasn’t good and that you’d like to be friends again. Ask them what their thoughts and feelings are now about what happened. Acknowledge what they say about how they feel, and then say how you feel. For example, “ I understand why you are upset and that you are angry. I feel sad/upset/bad about what happened, and I’d like to put things right. ”
Take responsibility and apologize
This doesn’t mean taking all the blame.【4】. For example, “ I know you wanted our situation to be kept private and I’ve really upset you by telling other people about it. I’m sorry I did that. I thought that talking about it to others would help me make sense of what was going on.”
Try only once
【5】. You’ve done your best. Now, it is up to them. They may need more time to process what happened between you, so give them some space.
A.But if not, ask.

G.It simply means admitting your part in any wrongdoing and expressing that you’re sorry.
