二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Luke Fortune drove from a small town in Central Oregon to Portland, where he parked his car in a paid garage overnight. The next morning, he discovered that the car’s window had been smashed along with his dreams for the future: his backpack and computer were gone.

Two days after the theft, another young man was standing outside his apartment, also in Portland. Masoud Almazrouei, 29 , was an exchange student from the United Arab Emirates. He had been approached by a man who said he had a computer for sale. Only $ 200. He needed a computer, so he bought it, took it home, and turned it on. Within seconds, he saw files and photographs. He realized it could be stolen. Almazrouei found what appeared to be the owner’s cell phone number and called it. Fortune didn’t trust this guy with a thick accent and thought it was a trick.

Soon after, a police officer called Fortune to say that a man had dropped the computer off and had said he was sorry. He passed along the man’s number.

Fortune called and thanked Almazrouei and insisted on paying him a reward of $ 200 , the money he was out. Almazrouei refused. He said, it was his honor and duty as a Muslim to return the property to the rightful owner.

Still the encounter produced its own kind of rewards. For Fortune, it was a lesson in cultural awareness with the sometimes bitter national debate about immigrants, especially from the Arab world. “I’m from a small, mainly white town,” Fortune said. “I’ve never met a Muslim. He’s a good man.”

Almazruel’s lesson was perhaps more complex. When a story about the two young men’s encounter made it to the local papers, Almazrouei received a call from Wim Wiewel, the present of Portland State University, where Almazrouei is studying economics.

“We thought since you gave back the laptop, we should give you a laptop so that you’ll have one,” Wiewel told him. “We’re very proud of you. It was a great story, and you did the right thing.”

1How did Almazrouei return the computer to Fortune finally?

A.He went to Fortune’s apartment and handed it to him.

B.He asked the police to return the computer to him.

C.He apologized to Fortune and handed it to him.

D.He sent the computer to him by express delivery.

2Why did Fortune think it was a trick?

A.Because he used to discriminate against Muslims.

B.Because he never met an immigrant before.

C.Because he believed “There is no such thing as a free lunch. ”

D.Because he believed “Never talk to strangers.”

3What does the sentence “Still the encounter produced its own kind of rewards” mean?

A.Almazrouei received a reward of $ 200 from Portland State University.

B.Fortune could seek his dream with his computer back.

C.Both of the young men gained something in their own way.

D.Kindness can eventually pay off one day.

  • 22、I recently heard a wonderful new parenting phrase that I suspect is going to become a regular addition to my vocabulary. The phrase is “benign neglect”, and it refers to leaving one’s children free to make their own decisions, control their own time, and generally act like adults.

Jeni Marinucci, who first introduced me to this phrase, described how she treats her children almost as if they were hearty houseplants: “They should be watered abundantly and you should ensure they get plenty of sunshine. But otherwise, just let them be.” From a young age, her children have been making their own hair and other appointments (after she showed them how to do it). Similarly, their time is their own to use as they wish. On a lazy Saturday, it’s up to them to figure out a ride to the movies and how to make breakfast and lunch for themselves.

The “benign neglect approach” may sound extreme to some readers. Indeed, one commenter on Marinucci’s article accused her of neglecting to raise her children at all, which seems a bit uncomfortable. It’s true that her approach would not work for everyone, but at the very least she recognizes what so many parents these days fail to acknowledge — that our beloved children will spend a far greater percentage of their lives as adults than they will as children, so we parents neglect a fundamental requirement of our job if we fail to prepare them for that independence.

I like that “benign neglect” pays attention to the parental side of parenting, and does not focus entirely on the children. However, miracles will only happen if I hand over responsibilities to my growing children. It’s like the old proverb: Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.

【1】What is the first paragraph mainly about?

    A.Making decisions.

    B.Controlling one’s time.

    C.The author’s vocabulary.

    D.A new parenting phrase.

【2】How did Marinucci introduce “benign neglect”?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By analyzing the data.

    C.By giving a statement.

    D.By making comparisons.

【3】What are the parents advised to do in raising kids?

    A.Give them a good education.

    B.Instruct them to be independent.

    C.Meet their reasonable demands.

    D.Love them unconditionally.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Focus Your Kids Entirely

B.Learn to Say No to Your Kids

C.“Benign Neglect” Isn’t a Bad Thing for Kids

D.“Benign Neglect” Doesn’t Work for Everyone

  • 23、Long Walks in Europe

    Waldstätterweg Route, Lucerne, Switzerland

    Distance 71 miles

The Waldstätterweg Route is one of the safest when it comes to snowy conditions, and the views and the colours of the trees are breathtaking at the end of October. This seven-stage route spreads to the shore of Lake Lucerne, with the glaring blue water being a constant companion. Old paths and elegant routes through woods link lakeside settlements.

Harz Witches Route, Lower Saxony, Germany

    Distance 58 miles

The Harz Mountains have long been associated with German folklore (民俗). Harz Witches Route runs along forest tracks through Harz National Park and can be walked throughout October and beyond. The route takes in forests, Germany’s largest wooden church, and a 439-metre rope suspension bridge. It also follows the poet Goethe’s hiking route up the Brocken.

    GR141, Andalucía, Spain

    Distance 68 miles

Autumn isn’t just a good time to walk in Andalucía. The weather stays warm long after winter starts to bite further north. It’s cheaper and less crowded, too. In November, conditions are milder here and some plants continue to flower. And two newly created GR routes begin here: both are well marked, reasonably challenging, divided into six stages and walkable in a week.

    Menalon Route, Peloponnese, Greece

    Distance 47 miles

The Menalon Route is an excellent option for autumn. Temperatures are pleasant and autumn colours are wonderful well into November. It’s a quiet time to visit, too. Nights in mountain villages are a highlight. Dimitsana, surrounded by snowy peaks, is a particular jewel. In Stemnitsa, there is a folklore museum showing the village’s jewellery-making heritage.

【1】Which route may attract people who are interested in folk and local religious culture?

    A.Waldstätterweg Route.

    B.Harz Witches Route.

    C.GR141.

    D.Menalon Route.

【2】What can people do on Menalon Route?

    A.Admire colorful flowers.

    B.Enjoy wonderful nights.

    C.Learn about local festivals.

    D.Explore the forests.

【3】What do the listed four routes have in common?

    A.They cover similar distances.

    B.They require no charges.

    C.They suit autumn walks.

    D.They feature snow scenery.

  • 24、“Father, do you see Mother in your dreams?” the young girl asks. “You know sometimes I do.”

“Mother comes to see me a lot, you know. We sit and talk.” The father smiles. “How is your homework coming along?”

“Why do I have to study so hard?”

“It is what your mother would have wanted!”

She regrets speaking her mind. “I’m sorry, Father, I shouldn’t have said that.” She looks up and sees his eyes well up with tears.

“It’s okay, love,” he gets up and pours himself a drink. “I’ll just sit outside for a while. You finish up your work, okay?”

“I’m sorry, Father; Mother did love you very much. She told me all the time.”

“Homework, first, eh? Then we can chat about your mother.”

He heads off outside and sits in his usual chair, looking around the courtyard. The whole area relaxes the mind and somehow soothes the soul.

“All finished, Father. May I get a drink and sit with you? I have some questions.”

She comes with two drinks one for him and one for herself. He looks surprised. She never really liked him having a drink. Although he had cut back a lot from before he brought her here, it still seemed strange.

“Mother told me all about you. That is before she passed away. We would laugh together at your love stories.”

He listens without uttering a single sound.

“Why didn’t you come and take her away with you? She really wanted that. Did you know that?”

Her father looks at his daughter lovingly. “Circumstances were difficult back then. It was just the way things were. When it came time to…” He sighs. “To visit her it was too late.”

The girl smiles. “I hope I will have the same kind of love you and mother had.”

“Without all the heartache,” her father adds.

“She always knew you loved her. She told me every day,” the child mentions cheerfully. “I saw her crying sometimes when she read your letters.”

“Did she make you promise to look after me?” She inquires.

“She asked me to take care of you.”

    “You promised her, didn’t you?”

    “Yes, I did.”

“It is nice out here, isn't it? Mother would have been very happy here.”

She talks with some authority. Her father remains silent. A smile comes to his weary brow. He nods his head.

“Mother wanted me to give you something. I think now the time is right.” She runs to her room. Upon returning she hands her father a book. “It’s mother’s diary! She wanted me to give it to you.”

He takes the book and holds it in his trembling hands, “Thank you.”

“Mother said you would understand things better.”

    “Wise woman, your mother.”

He places the book on the table as he gets up. The girl gets up and wraps herself around her father.

“I love you.” she looks up at his face.

He picks her up and hugs her. “I love you, too.” His voice trembles.

“It’s okay, Father. We have each other now and mother is in both of us.”

    He kisses her head.

“Time you went to bed,” her father softly says.

He puts her down and she scampers off to get washed and ready for bed.

Clearing up everything he checks on his daughter. She is in bed waiting for her good night kiss. He tucks her in and bids her goodnight.

Just as he is to leave she tells him. “Mother told me she adopted me when I was a baby.”

He stands at her bedroom door. Words fail him. Yes, he knew she was adopted.

“I am really lucky for being loved by my parents, even if I am not really theirs.”

You trying to bring on the water works?” he tells her.

She giggles, “Goodnight, Father. I love you.”

    “Love you, too.”

His face lights up as he wipes his dampened eyes.

The door closes and the child falls asleep dreaming of her mother.

Sitting outside he picks up the diary and opens it and reads the first line: “I love you, my dearest, if only things could have been different…”

【1】Why isn’t the mother with her family?
