  • 21、Many Americans are turning to Japan, they think, a country of high academic(学术的) achievement and economic success, for possible answers. However, the answers provided by Japanese preschools are not the ones Americans expected to find. In most Japanese preschools, surprisingly little emphasis is put on academic instruction. In one survey, 300 Japanese and 210 American preschool teachers, child development specialists, and parents were asked about various aspects of early childhood education. Only 2 percent of the Japanese respondents(答问卷者)listed “to give children a good start academically” as one of their top three reasons for a society to have preschools. In contrast, over half the American respondents chose this as one of their top three choices. To prepare children for successful careers in first grade and beyond, Japanese schools do not teach reading, writing, and mathematics, but rather skills such as determination, concentration, and the ability to work as a member of a group. The huge majority of young Japanese children are taught to read at home by their parents.

Like in America, there is diversity(多样性) in Japanese early childhood education. Some Japanese kindergartens have specific aims, such as early musical training or potential(潜力的) development. In large cities, some kindergartens are attached to universities that have elementary and secondary schools. Some Japanese parents believe that if their young children attend a university-based program, it will increase the children’s chances of eventually being admitted to top-rated schools and universities. Several more progressive programs have introduced free play as a way out for the heavy intellectualizing in some Japanese kindergartens.

1We learn from the first paragraph that many Americans believe ________.

    A. Japanese preschool education emphasizes academic instruction

    B. Japanese parents are more involved in preschool education than American parents

    C. Japan’s economic success is a result of its scientific achievements

    D. Japan’s higher education is superior to theirs

2In Japan’s preschool education, the focus is on ________.

    A. preparing children academically

    B. shaping children’s character

    C. teaching children mathematics

    D. developing children’s artistic interests

3Why do some Japanese parents send their children to university-based kindergartens?

    A. They can do better in their future studies.

    B. They can make more group experience grow there.

    C. They can be individually oriented when they grow up.

    D. They can have better chances of getting a first-rate education.

4Free play has been introduced in some Japanese kindergartens in order to ________.

    A. broaden children’s knowledge

    B. train children’s creativity

    C. lighten children’s study load

    D. enrich children’s experience

  • 22、Roughly the size of a soda can, sitting on a bookshelf, a relatively harmless device(设备) may be turning friends away from your home. The elephant in your living room is your Internet-connected camera, a device people are increasingly using for peace of mind in their homes. But few stop to think about the effect these devices may have on house guests. Should you tell your friends, for instance, that they’re being recorded while you all watch the big game together?

"It’s certainly new territory, especially as home security cameras become easier to fix," says Lizzie Post, president of the Emily Post Institute, America’s distinguished manners advisors. " I think it will be very interesting to see what manners appear in terms of whether you tell people you have a camera or not, and whether guests have a right to ask that it be turned off, if it’s not a security issue. "Post wants to make clear that she’s not talking about legal rights, but rather personal preference.

When it comes to security cameras, Post says it’s a host’s responsibility to make sure guests feel comfortable within their home. If the host casually acknowledges that there is a camera in the room by telling a story about it, that may be enough to provide an opening for a guest to say if they are uncomfortable.

However, if a contractor(合约工)is working in your home, you don’t need to tell them that there are cameras watching. Then again, the camera can also work in contractors’ favor. "If anything does go wrong while they’re in the house, they don’t want to be blamed for it," she says. "In fact, the camera could be the thing that proves that they didn’t steal the $20, or knock the vase off the table.

【1】The visitors are concerned that the security camera may .

    A.threaten their health

    B.spoil their peace of mind

    C.disturb their privacy

    D.affect their preference

【2】What is a host’s responsibility concerning the security camera?

    A.Indicating its position.

B.Making their guests feel at ease

    C.Turning it oil in time.

D.Having a casual talk with guests.

【3】How can the home security camera benefit contractors working in your home?

A.It can prevent the accidents happening.

    B.It can prove their innocence.

C.It can record their working progress.

D.It can make their work more enjoyable.

【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards the security camera?

    A.Negative.

    B.Pessimistic.

    C.Favorable.

    D.Objective.

  • 23、   A ten-year-old sperm whale(抹香鲸)was found dead on a beach in Scotland.A necropsy(尸检)revealed that nearly 100 kilograms of plastic and other trash had formed clumps(硬块)in its digestive system. The tragedy quickly made headlines. Why would a top predator in the ocean eat gloves, rope, and plastic cups?

Conventional wisdom suggests that marine animals eat plastic because it is there and they don't know any better. It is true that plastic may smell like food to some of them. But that doesn't explain why only certain types of whales-deep-diving toothed whales, such as sperm whales and pilot whales-turn up dead on beaches with stomachs full of plastic.

It's possible, says Savoca, that plastic trash sounds like food to toothed whales. These species

hunt deep in the ocean, sometimes nearly 500 meters below the surface, where it's pitch black(漆黑)。They use echolocation(回声定位)to hunt for food, typically squid(乌贼)。

By contrast, baleen whales(须鲸),including humpbacks and blue whales, have natural filters(过滤器)for their food.Baleen, the brush-like filter-feeding system they have in place of teeth,as well as their narrow throats, keeping them from swallowing anything much larger than the krill(磷虾群)that forms the basis of their diet. That could help explain why baleen whales are not ending up with plastic filled stomachs.

Fifty years ago, there was almost no plastic in the ocean. The lifespan of a large whale can be

twice that long.In the lifetime of a single whale,we went from an ocean with no plastic to hundreds of thousands of tons of it.Plastic comes on top of other factors affecting life in the ocean-climate change, overfishing, shipping traffic, and noise pollution."it's a real shame because their lives are challenging enough even without the additional pressure we put onto them,"says Savoca.

1What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

A.That plastic smells like food to toothed whales.

B.That marine animals started to eat plastic decades ago.

C.That a number of toothed whales are found dead on beaches every year.

D.That conventional wisdom about why marine animals eat plastic doesn't apply to all whales.

2Which of the following statements DOESN'T explain why toothed whales are more easily harmed by plastic pollution than baleen whales?

    A.They don't feed on krill.

B.They live in the dark depths of the ocean.

C.They are not born with brush-like filter-feeding systems.

D.They don't determine the location of their food with their eyes.

3What does the author want to emphasize in the last paragraph?

A.Whales have a longer lifespan than humans.

B.Plastic has a negative effect on climate change.

C.Great changes have taken place in the ocean in the past 50 years.

D.Plastic pollution has worsened already serious issues affecting marine life.

4Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

    A.Different diets,different fates

    B.Silent killers in the ocean

    C.Plastic trash in-the ocean

    D.Saving whales

  • 24、My legs were shaking, my heart pounding. As we neared the edge of the cliff, I double-checked all my equipment to make sure it was secure. I felt anxious, but not eager for my turn as I waited in line with the members of my group. Fear rose from the pit of my stomach as I realized there was no one else in front of me Slowly, I lowered myself to the edge of the nearly 200-foot cliff. My skin shook like a dozen earthquakes when

I reached the belay man, the person who hooked me to the belaying ropes, which keep me from falling. He hooked me up, and I slowly lowered myself over the edge of the cliff, breathed deeply, and went into a sitting position with both feet in front of me. I closed my eyes, gulped(大口吸气), and began to go down.

Panic took over as I reached a point where my feet could no longer touch the rocky wall. The wall was right there, fooling me. My foot made contact with the wall, causing me to rotate. As I slowly began to spin around an interesting thing happened; my panic vanished. The beautiful view of the surrounding area overwhelmed(淹没;压倒)me. All the different-sized trees were evergreens, which seemed to blanket the hill-side. The forest was filled with life as different types of animals raced across my field of vision. As I looked up-ward the sky seemed to open up into a blue vastness. A sense of excitement overtook me. I'd been waiting for this moment, night and day, for one long month, and finally my dream had become a reality. I began to feel calmer and more relaxed.

As I finally neared the bottom of the cliff, there seemed to be less animal activity. Looking up, the cliff did not seem as frightening as it did going down. My feet were shaky when they finally touched the soft and muddy ground. Pride swelled up within me. Traveling on the muddy road, I began the long climb upward.

【1】How did the author feel when he was about to go down the cliff?

    A.Excited.

    B.Eager.

    C.Frightened

B.To place him over the edge.

C.To let him go down faster.

D.To tie him to the tree.

【3】When did the author begin to spin around?

A.When his feet couldn't touch the rocky wall.

B.As soon as his feet touched the rocky wall again.

C.When he lowered himself down the cliff.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I was walking along the road to school one day and I met my friend Raine. He suggested that we skip school and go to the movies. I refused as my dad was very fierce and strict. After much persuasion, I gave in. There was a Will Smith movie on and I was a fan.

So we set off to the movies together, bought our tickets, popcorn and drinks and settled down comfortably. As we were early, the lights were still on. We watched people come in groups, families and there were couples too. Some of them looked like school students playing truant(逃学)like us. As I turned around, I caught a glimpse of my uncle Andy and Aunt Jane walking in. They were kind and cared about me very much. I sank into my seat quickly to avoid being spotted. I signaled to Raine that there was someone I didn’t want to see and Raine made it more obvious by turning around and asking “Who? And where?” loudly. It made me sit even lower in my seat.

To make things worse, they came and sat in the row behind us and were saying to each other how I would have loved to come to this movie as I adored Will Smith. They were even commenting about the students playing truant. Soon the movie began and I was glad when the lights were turned off but I didn’t enjoy the movie at all for fear of being spotted. So, I sat there like an astronaut, peering over the front seat.

Every now and then I would secretly take a quick look at my aunt and uncle. I was sure they were also looking at me. Feeling nervous and anxious, I kept wondering how I could leave the cinema without being noticed.

    注意:

    1.所续写短文词数应为150左右;

    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

When the movie ended and the lights came on, I remained seated.
