“Sorry, Dad. Now I know it is important to understand that animals need to eat right. I won’t do that again because it is bad for them. And thank you for telling me that.”
My dad smiles and says, “Good for you, Jim. I am so happy that you are learning to think about the result before you do something. We can help the animals by being responsible for their health. 27、When Minna Stess was six, her parents built a skate park in their garden. That’s where Stess learned skateboarding from her older brother and then got very interested in it.
When you are a kid with a dream, life comes to you fast. For Stess’s parents, it’s been so fast that they didn’t realize their daughter was serious about her skateboarding. Stess was often the only girl competing locally in California, the US. She kept winning prizes and finally arrived on the national scenes. Now the 14-year-old girl is the youngest member of the United States team.
Stess’s road to learning skateboarding is not always easy. “Getting hurt is the biggest part of it,” she says. In 2019, at the age of 12, Stess broke her elbow, which made her have three operations and kept her out of action for three and a half months. The girl still remembered what she said then to her dad, “It’s because I’m hurt and I can’t skate that I really know how much I love it.”
As one of the best park skaters in the US, Stess was going to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, which were postponed because of COVID-19. But her father thought it might be a good thing for his daughter. “She’s so young. She’s going to grow a lot in the next year. It’s a good chance to be a kid and hang out with her friends.”
“I never thought of it as an Olympic sport because it’s more like a hobby.” Stess says. “But I think it would be a really life-changing experience. It’s great!” Whatever happens at the games, Stess says skateboarding will always be her lifelong pursuit(追求).
