  • 27、Ever since I graduated from high school I've worked in the factories surrounding my hometown every summer. However, making the transformation between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to be unacceptable, getting to a factory by 6 o'clock each morning is suffering. My friends never seem to understand why I'm so relieved to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation.

There are few people as self-confident as a college student who has never been out in the real world. People of my age always seem to overestimate the value of their time and knowledge. In fact, all the classes did not prepare me for my battles with the machine I ran in the plant, which would jam whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part backward or upside down.

The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could disappear over night. Issues like being laid off and overseas relocation had always seemed distant to me until my co-workers told me that the unit I was working in would shut down within six months and move to Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour.

After working 12-hour shifts (轮班) in a factory, the other optionshave become only too clear. " This job pays well, but it's hell on the body, " said one co-worker. " Study hard and keep reading. " she added. When I'm back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy re-writes seems too irresponsible after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound stale (陈腐的) now ring true.

My experiences in the factories have inspired me to make the most of my college years before I enter the real world for good.

【1】What does the author think of his summer holiday?

A.It was no holiday for him at all.

B.It brought him nothing but suffering.

C.It was a relief from his hard work at school.

D.It offered him a chance to make more friends.

【2】What can we infer about most college students?

A.They do better in the real world.

B.They are confident when they work.

C.They think too highly of themselves.

D.They are expert at handling machines.

【3】What is the biggest pressure for blue-collar workers?

    A.A low income

    B.The lack of security

    C.An unstable location

    D.Less break

【4】How did the working experiences change the author?

A.He became responsible for his work.

B.He learned to be more practical at work.

C.He began to respect blue-collar workers.

D.He came to appreciate his college education.

  • 28、   Winslow Homer was a famous American painter. Since Art History class in collegeI had always admiredhis works andI was lucky to see a large exhibition of his works when I was in my early 30s. It was at this event that I bought a print of his painting “Snap the Whip”. It always hung in my classroom until I retired from teaching.

I thought it truly captured the freedom andfun of childhood. In the paintinga group of young boys are playing a game arm in arm on the grass ground in front of a farm house. They are jumping and laughing wildly with great joy. One of the boys is falling down to the ground. They are not even wearing shoes!

During my last year of teachingthere was a young woman in her first year of teaching right next door to me andwe got to be goodfriends. She had been an art student before taking up education. Her eyes were drawn immediately to this print when she entered my room. So on my last day of teachingafter the students hadleftI took the painting off the wall and walked next door and gave it to her.

She was really surprisedbut very glad to have it. I was delighted that she likedit and all the students she would have would treasure it as much as I had. We found the perfect place for it on one of her walls and hung it together. I was happy that she brought back this wonderful memory for me.

  • 29、   As an internet influencer, there seems to be nothing special about Miquela Sousa. The 19-year-old lives in Los Angeles, US, posts pictures of herself sporting fashionable looks, and has just made her way into the March edition of Vogue magazine. But Miquela isn’t real – she is an electronic character.

Her fans don’t seem to mind – she has 855,000 followers on US social networking platform Instagram. And her first single Not Mine – yes, she “sings” too – also reached No 8 on music streaming (流媒体) platform Spotify last August.

It’s kind of curious that in a time when authenticity (真实性) and “being real” are valued more than ever, “fake” celebrities like Miquela are appreciated and seen as icons (偶像).

Perhaps the reason for Miquela’s popularity lies behind the fame of a similar star, Hatsune Miku. This 16-year-old animated(动画的) singer from Japan has held singing concerts not only in her home country but also in the US and China.

Even though Hatsune’s no more than a 3-D figure projected (投射) onto the stage, her fans are more than willing to pay to actually see her “in person”, because to them, she’s better than human singers. “She’s rather more like a goddess: She has human parts, but she transcends human limitations. She’s the great post-human pop star,” wrote reporter James Verini on Wired magazine.

Critics may say that 3-D stars could never replace humans, but when it comes to being authentic, are humans really the best example of how to do it?

Most of us edit our photos before posting them online, and we tend to create a fantasy that we’re living a perfect life by letting people only see the brighter side of it.

“Miquela is no less real to me than any other internet stranger with whom I’ve interacted,” wrote reporter Leora Yashari on the website Nylon. “Her existence in itself represents a new breed (种类) of influencer – someone who is breaking the boundaries of what is real and what is fake.”

1What is the best title of the passage ?

A.A character with animated talents. B.A computer-generated role model.

C.A new sports star with fashionable looks. D.An experienced life-like dancer.

2What does the word “ transcend” in paragraph 5 means

    A.take over B.look like C.go beyond D.hold up

3What is the purpose of the author when he mentioned Hatsune Miku?

A.To show the similarities 3-D stars share. B.To make a comparison with Miquela Sousa.

C.To explain why 3-D stars are well received. D.To stress how 3-D stars go beyond human limitations.

4What message does the passage agree with ?

A.Animated heroes could match the authenticity of humans one day.

B.3-D stars are not as real as human celebrities.

C.Human celebrities have greater influence than animated ones.

D.3-D icons can also be as influential and authentic as humans’.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Hundreds of years ago, Charles Darwin predicted that facial expressions of emotion are 1. If you’ve ever seen an episode of the popular US TV drama Lie To Me, you will really understand facial expressions. The leading actor of the show, Dr. Cal Lightman has spent 20 years studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions, which allows him to point out other people’s studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions which allows him to point out other people’s 2 and on many occasions, to be skilled at tricking in order to get the truth.

Is there really much truth behind this science of 3 human emotions through expressions? Paul Ekman, a(n) 4 psychologist whose work focuses on mapping facial expressions, is Lie To Me’s scientific advisor and the following are some of his explanations.

    Hand-to-face gesture indicates a lie.

Each micro-expression is unique to 5 specific emotions because the person is often unaware of doing it. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are lying when someone uses a hand to hide part of his face. The person could be holding back information but you may better consider looking at other more important clues rather than just the simple hand-to-face gesture.

    A liar refuses eye contact.

People look away when they are thinking carefully and considering each word before it is spoken, not just when they are 6 an excuse. Oblique eyebrows are a very reliable 7of sadness and few people can make this 8 expression, so it is actually never faked.

    Guilty knowledge technique is 9.

Lightman often uses the guilty knowledge technique, mentioning something that only the guilty person will know about and show a(n)10. This is often used in polygraph exams: “Was the person strangled, shot or stabbed to death?” Only the killer knows and is likely to respond physiologically when the actual weapon is mentioned.
