24、 Some people ski (滑雪) down mountains. Others climb hug rocks or take photos of dangerous animals. Why do people enjoy risky (冒险的) activities like these?
Some people take risks simply because it makes them feel good. An expert Bob says that these explorers (探险家) are always looking for change and excitement. When people do something new or risky, something special in the brain creates a happy feeling. They love this feeling and want to experience it as often as possible.
Some people don't take risks for the feeling of excitement but to achieve something. For example, Mike Fay went on a dangerous 2,000-mile special journey in central Africa. He worked to help save the animals there. Fay’s efforts helped create 13 national parks.
For other people, such as extreme athletes (极限运动员) taking risks is part of their job. Sports psychologist Shane says extreme athletes see the work differently. In a dangerous activity, most people do not feel in control. Extreme athletes are different: they feel in control in dangerous situations. The danger can even help them. For example, famous skier Daron Rahives says that being afraid makes him try harder to succeed and all the risk-takers like to challenge themselves.
Most of us are not extreme athletes or explorers, but we still take risks in our lives for all kinds of reasons. And what kind of risk-taker are you?

25、She had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She must have been 6 years old. It was pouring so heavily. We all stood there just inside the door of the Wal-Mart.
Then, we heard the girt asked, “Mom, let’s run through the rain.”
“What?” Mom asked.
“Let’s run through the rain.” She repeated.
“No, honey. We’ll wait until it slows down a bit,” Mom replied. This young child waited about another minute and repeated, “Mom. let’s run through the rain.”
“We’ll get wet if we do.” Mom said.
“No, we won’t, Mom. That’s not what you said this morning.” The young girl said.
“This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?”
“Don’t you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer (癌症), you said, if God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!”
We all stood silently, No one came or left in the next few minutes. Mom said nothing for a while. “Honey, you are right. Let’s run through the rain. If we get wet, maybe we just need washing,” Mom said. Then off they ran.
We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they rushed past the cars and they held their shopping bags over their heads just in case they got wet. When they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars.
And yes, I did. I ran. I got wet. People can take away material possessions, your money or your health. But no one can ever take away your precious memories. So don’t forget to make time and take the chances to make memories every day! I hope you still take the time to run through the rain.

26、 Last month when I was taking part in a US college interview , I was asked , “ what makes you special ? ” In fact I had answered questions likes this many times since I decided to go to college in the US. The US colleges paid special attention to different achievements. For example, a person who is very good at math can go to a famous college but also can be a good football player.
This experience made me think again that I must try to find where my own interests might lead me . To be honest, it was not easy. However, I never felt sorry to choose this way because it helped me understand myself . If I took the College Entrance Examination, as we call it gaokao in China, it could never possibly do .
When I entered high school, I took gaokao seriously because it seemed to me a great way to show how good at my lessons. However ,as I grew older , I realized gaokao did make me work hard at my lessons , but the pressure also pushed many other activities out of my life , like guitar―playing . Although I had no time for it , I will still get to it in the future .
No doubt, gaokao provides a way of choosing those who are successful in their studies . But it is really important for all of us to rethink what “ talent ” really is today . This is because we now live in a world in which all of our other human qualities are needed for success, not just the high grade .
Ken Robinson once said, “ the society depends on different kinds of talents . ” However, gaokao pays too attention to a person' s grades but little to his other qualities. And it is these qualities that makes life colorful and fun.
As high school students, we can not change the present situation of eduction , but we are always free to think outside of the box . Although good school grade is still useful, I hope one day we will see our education also welcomes the amazing possibilities in different people .

A. My school life abroad.

27、 “It hurts me more than you,” and “This is for your own good.” My mother used to say so years ago when I had to learn Latin, clean my room, stay home and do homework.
That was before we entered the permissive period in education in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The schools and the educators made it easy on us. They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy (不干预政策), We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them computers, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation.
Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we've made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon Klompus who says of her students-“so passive”- and wonders what happened. Nothing was demanded of them, she believes. Televison, says Klompus, contributes to children's passivity. “We're talking about a generation kids who've never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them. Instead of saying 'go look it up', you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say 'no' to a kid.”
Yes, it does. It takes energy and it takes work. It's time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It's time to take the car away, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it's for their own good. It's time to start telling them “no” again.
