四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、The workers who brought the girl to the orphanage(孤儿院) knew little about her. The street where they found her had been her home for many years. Her parents were unknown. They left her long ago. At the orphanage, the girl, like all the children there, was taught to read and write. While she was studying at the orphanage, she learned something else-to be independent(独立). At twenty-one, she left the orphanage and began to work as a secretary. And then, in 1975, while she was still working as an ordinary secretary, something special happened. She entered the Miss Hong Kong Competition and won it. This was the turning point in her life. Now her name, Mary Cheung, was known to everybody.

Mary entered the competition because she wanted to show that orphanage girls could be something. Winning the competition gave her the chance to start a new life. This led her first into television and then into business as a manager. When she was working as a manager, she had trouble with her reports. “My English just wasn’t good enough.” she says. Luckily, she had a boyfriend (who later became her husband) to help her.

Mary studied management(管理) at Hong Kong Polytechnic and graduated in 1980. She started her own business in 1985. But she did not stop developing herself. She then studied at the University of Hong Kong. Since 1987, she had spent a lot of time on photography(摄影). She has held several exhibitions of her works in many places-China, New Zealand and Paris. She still found time, however, to work on TV, write for newspapers and support her family.

The girl from the street has come a long way, but her journey has not finished yet.

  • 25、If you bought some candy months ago but never ate it, how can you tell whether it’s still eatable? The easiest way is to check the “expiration dateEXP printed on the cover. If that date has already passed, you may throw the candy away. But is that really necessary?

According to a new report from the NRDC, tons of food is wasted each year, largely because people don’t fully understand what expiration dates actually mean, so they think the food is not safe to eat.

Food dating was introduced in 1975 because customers wanted more information about the things that they were eating. When they first showed up, use-by dates only showed freshness because producers wanted their products to be tasted in their best conditions.

However, most customers mistakenly believed that use-by dates showed how safe the food was. But the truth is that these dates have nothing to do with the danger of food poisoning(中毒). Eggs, can still be eaten three to five weeks after being bought, even though the use﹣by dates is much earlier. When their use-by dates pass, strawberry-flavored drinks may lose their red color and cookies may lose their crunch(松脆的口感), but they are not harmful.

“It’s an unclear subject, the difference between food quality and food safety,” said Jane Roberts from a US food testing company. “Even the workmates in the food factory are not sure about it. This is why the use-by dates must be printed on the covers of products. We hope it can help customers understand the information so that they won’t waste a lot of food.”

But this won’t be a mistake that is easy to correct, because people have believed it for so long. Another problem is that the quality levels of different foods change differently. Some are still eatable long after their use-by date while others are not.

As a result, food factory officials are not thinking of changing the use-by dates to a date which can show when the food is to be thrown away.

【1】Every year, why is tons of food thrown away?

A.Because it is no longer delicious.

B.Because it is no longer fresh.

C.Because people think it’s not safe to cat.

D.Because the use-by dates are wrongly printed.

【2】What did the use-by dates show at first according to the passage?

    A.Food safety.

    B.Food quality.

    C.Food freshness.

    D.Food producer.

【3】What do the underlined words “expiration date (EXP)” mean?

    A.生产日期

    B.出厂期

A.Even after their expiration dates pass, some foods are still safe to cat.

B.“Expiration dates” were first used to show when food was possible to go bud.

C.Most customers care more about freshness than food safety.

D.Most customers fully understand what expiration dates mean.

    C.Customers and food.

    D.Food quality and freshness.

  • 26、I was twenty years old, and my parents were looking forward to the day when I would be earning my own living. Unfortunately, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted my future occupation to be. The only thing I did know was that I did not want to spend the next 45 years teaching, being a nurse or sitting in an office. But that was before the postman delivered a catalogue (目录) of courses that were being offered at the local college. As I looked through it, I was attracted by a page that talked about the difficulties faced by deaf people in their everyday lives and how students could help by learning sign language. It went on to say that graduates of the course usually find work in different organizations, such as law companies, the Stock Exchange, insurance companies and banks. Then I saw something that really caught my eye: “Singer” are also needed for sporting events, concerts, theatrical performances and, believe it or not, circuses! By the time I got to the bottom of the page, I knew I had found the perfect occupation.

I enrolled (注册) on the course, which to my parents’ great delight was free of charge. The course was brilliant. My favourite part was the final lesson, when our teacher asked us to sign our favourite song. It was really difficult because not only did we have to sign the words, but we also had to find a way of showing whether the song was happy or sad and whether the beat was slow or fast. It was the hardest thing I have ever done—but also the most rewarding.

    D. almost always start their career in a law company

    B. she should sign a song for the last lesson

    C. her teacher sang a very sad song to the class

    D. she realized that her parents didn’t have to pay

4】【4Which of the following best describes the writer?

    A. A young woman who has found her ideal career.
