26、The sun is going to expand into the orbit of Mercury according to scientific calculations, which will result in the entire Earth catching on fire. Who will save the world?
This imaginative tale is at the heart of the latest Chinese sci-fi movie The Wandering Earth. Unlike many American space-themed films where the solution to a disaster Earth faces is always fleeing (逃离) the planet in spaceships, this time we’re taking the Earth with us. The film, which has made it the country's most successful film of all time, has offered a different and more ambitious idea.
The “ambition” didn’t come from nowhere. For thousands of years, “homeland” has had a soft spot in the hearts and minds of Chinese people. One old idiom that shows a strong feeling that Chinese people have had for their homeland is “luoyeguigen”, which means returning to one’s homeland in old age, like fallen leaves returning to the roots of their tree.
“What is Chinese sci-fi?” Guo Fan, the film’s director, said in an interview. “A vehicle that really expresses our cultural and spiritual core ( 核 心 ) can be called Chinese sci-fi. Otherwise, we’re just following others and telling the same Hollywood stories.”
And the makers of The Wandering Earth may have chosen the best time to tell its Chinese sci-fi story. The film was released on Feb 5, the first day of Chinese New Year. It was a time when many people had just made the hard journey back to their hometowns. So to them, there is only one possible way to tell the story: Earth goes wherever humans go, because it’s our home.

27、 Airports are mini cities, often with their own firefighters, doctors and even priests. But goat herders(牧工)? Passengers flying out of San Francisco International Airport recently might have caught a glimpse of something strange: nearly 600 goats chewing away at overgrown weed. Each spring the airport needs to remove the brush in a remote comer to protect nearby homes from possible fires.
For the past seven years, the airport has turned to Goats R Us, a goat-powered brush removal company, which charged US $34,900 for the service this year. A large amount, isn't it? Why not employ machines on humans? Two endangered species, the San Francisco garter snake(束带蛇)and the California red-legged frog, live there. Thus, this humane approach has been adopted to secure their peaceful life.
What do the herders and their dogs do? There's always a goat or two that would like to take a different path. "Just as a kindergarten teacher knows which kids need a little extra attention, so we will make sure the dogs can target the 'naughty goats' to keep them secure," says Terri Oyarzun, co-owner of Goats R Us. When asked how to lead goats to the next plot of plants. Terri says, "It's effortless. You know, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence? Goats were the inspiration for that philosophy."
The goats travel 30 miles each spring from their home in Orinda, California to the airport in a 16-wheel truck. They spend two weeks cutting away a 20-foot firebreak on the west side of the airport. When Oyarzun's mats aren't clearing brush at the airport, they are busy doing similar work on the side of California's free-ways, at state parks, and anywhere else with overgrown vegetation. The family has about 8,000 total active goats, nearly twice that of three years ago.

28、Loneliness is a widespread problem with complex roots.
There has been a quiet pandemic developing while most people's attention has been on covid-19. The lockdown has worsened a problem that has been spreading in many developed nations for decades: loneliness.
It is a complex issue which covers not only social lives, but the way you work and the way you vote. Noreena Hertz, an academic, deals with the subject in an important new book, "The Lonely Century". Loneliness increases the risk of heart disease, strokes and dementia(痴呆症). Those who say they are lonely are likelier to be depressed five years later. In addition, lonely people can become more hostile towards others and more attracted to extremist politics.
Part of the problem stems from contemporary employment. Globally, two in five office workers feel lonely at work. This rises to three in five in Britain. Gig-economy(零工经济)jobs can leave people with insecure incomes and without the companionship of colleagues. The pandemic has made it more difficult to make, and maintain friendships, particularly for new employees.
Ms.Hertz points her finger at other recent developments. One of them is social media. The internet has led to much cyber-bullying (although it has also been a source of companionship during the lockdown). And people glued to their smartphones spend less time interacting socially.
Some changes in behavior are caused by individual choice. Before the pandemic no one was stopping people going to church or taking part in sports. They simply preferred to do other things. American fathers spend three times as much time with their children as they did in the 1960s. That is surely a welcome development.
So recreating a communal society may be difficult. When the pandemic ends, people may enjoy the chance to be with their neighbors and colleagues for a while. But the trend is clear. Technology means that people can get their entertainment at home, and work there, too. It is convenient but it also leads to loneliness.

A.Covid-19.

29、 I'm now living in the south of France with my husband Keith and three small children, and I feel like a fish out of water everywhere but one place-the Saturday street market. It's been operating in our small town of Sommieres since the 13th century, but we've only lived here for three months.
From Monday to Friday, life is all about the kids.I'm busy helping my children deal with life in a French school. It's not easy, and their stress is the whole family's stress,as Keith and I are occupied with the daily school runs, piles of homework and school notes in French.
But on Saturday, the market is for me.I feel so peaceful as I walk along the quiet street toward the busy town square. The knife-sharpening man is there, operating a machine that looks like it dates from the Industrial Revolution. There' re street musicians with guitars and microphones, and the sound of beautiful songs fills the air.And the food,of course,is delicious. The cheese man doesn't speak-he just points and cuts, offering a piece from his knife.Lines come out of the door for fresh bread at the bakery.Organic vegetables, herbs and desserts are a feast for the eyes, before being put into the bag to be enjoyed later for lunch. The noises and smells of the market are unfamiliar and thrilling, but their procedures are clear to me.This is part of why I love the place so much:Unlike during the week, when I'm constantly faced with my own difficulties,I know how this place works. My terrible French isn't the barrier to communication that it is in other circumstances.
At school and in the village,I can't joke or join a conversation, and although the other parents at the school are kind,I'm an outsider. But at the market,I'm just another customer with a basket.Surrounded by day trippers,I feel like a local- greeting people I know and petting dogs.
My Saturday experiences allow me to hope that in the near future I'll feel equally confident in my everyday life.Until then,Saturdays prepare me for the coming week of school runs.

The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their 【4】 screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket. As USA Today noted, they’re “the 【5】 of a small tablets and smart-phone, all in a single device”.
The technology could 【6】 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 【7】 available space.
In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 【8】 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.
So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?
According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 【9】. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 【10】 the majority of people.
But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.
Patrick Moor-head, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if fold-able or roll-able mobile displays are the future of smart-phones; the only question is when and by whom.”

The World Health Organization, or WHO, estimates that more than 300,000 women die every year during pregnancy or childbirth. Each year, about 2.6 million babies are born dead and another 2.7 million babies die during the first 28 days of life, it said. Most of the deaths are taking place in South Asia and in Africa, south of the Sahara Desert.
Many of the deaths could have been avoided with quality health care, WHO officials said. Some stillbirths (births of dead babies), infant (new-born baby) deaths or deaths of mothers result from complications (并发症) during childbirth. Others may result from health problems with the mother. A poor diet or using drugs may also be to blame, the WHO added.
Another problem is that nearly all babies who are stillborn and half of all newborn deaths are never documented. Those deaths are not reported to or investigated by government health agencies. Traditions and beliefs often affect the collection of important records about infant deaths. In many countries, there is a belief that a stillbirth may not represent a lost life. Officials said this means the actual number of stillborn and newborn deaths is probably even higher than the WHO’s own current estimates. The United Nations agency says the lack of information makes it harder to find solutions. It is important for all births and deaths to be recorded so that health officials can make better decisions on how to prevent future deaths.
The WHO released three reports earlier this month to help health agencies do a better job collecting information.

I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my music, so when the annual winter recital (独奏会) was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs. My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing letdown into something worthwhile. “You and your sister should perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living (养老院),” my mom suggested brightly. “I’m sure the seniors there would really appreciate the music and you could each play more than just two songs.”
I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the residents at the home with some lively tunes.
My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for my sister and me to perform. We were told we could play the piano during the Sunday diner hour in two weeks. In the coming days, I worked especially hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would enjoy, including many old classics. My sister and I decided that first I would play three songs and then she would, taking turns until the end of the hour.
When the much-anticipated day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. We were greeted by an old woman who introduced herself as Phyllis. Then we came to the dining room and Phyllis announced to the room, “These two girls have come to sing and want to introduce themselves!” As she handed the microphone to me there was scattered applause.
“Hi, my name is Baylie,” I said with a smile.
“Hi, I’m Chloe,” my sister said shyly.
“We have come here to entertain you with some piano songs. We hope you enjoy our performance,” I enthusiastically announced.
