22、 There are around 100 tribes(部落)that live in global isolation, mostly in South America and India. The Sentinelese have lived on one of the Andaman Islands in Eastern India for 60, 000 years. They protect their island by fighting against people from outside. Their language is different from any other known language. Another Andaman tribe is the Jarawa. In the past, they were independent and fought against anybody trying to make contact with them. But in 1998, the Indian government built a road across their land, and since then, they’ve had more contact with the outside world.
Some Amazon tribes avoid contact because of unhappy memories. The Mashco-Piro left their vegetable gardens after rubber companies killed most of their tribe at the beginning of the 20th century. Those who survived became nomadic(游牧的)and started hunting animals in the forest.
The Awa live in the Amazon forests ofBrazil. Out of 350 members, 100 have no contact with the outside world. They left their villages and adopted a nomadic lifestyle around 1850 to escape attacks by Europeans. In the following years, farmers in nearby communities started cutting the trees to expand their farmland. The Awa lost most of their hunting land. The few Amazon tribes that still exist are fighting to keep their traditional way of life.
Survival, an organization that fights for the rights of tribal people, says that uncontacted tribes are the most vulnerable(弱势的)humans on the planet and that’s why their environment should be unavailable to the rest of us. After years of pressure, the organization got Brazil’s government to clear non-natives from the Awa land. All non-Awa people are leaving so the tribe can get their forest back.
But some think it's impossible for tribes to stay isolated forever in a connected world. Contact will be made one day. So the question is:Whose choice should it be, ours or theirs?

23、 Six supporters of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), including one inside a cat costume and another dressed as a pig, marched on the sidewalk outside High School District 113 in Highland Park, Illinois, US. Their goal was to get the district to end animal dissection in science classes.
Animal dissection has always divided people: Is it right to dissect frogs, pigs or other animals in school science classes, particularly when computers can show detailed images of the parts of animals?
“Especially with all the violence in the US, it is important we teach children compassion for all living beings, said Mysti Lee, assistant campaign manager for PETA.
The American Anti-Vivisection Society reports that 18 states, including Illinois, have laws allowing students to choose alternatives to dissection. And in recent years, biology classes have moved toward the study of cells, molecules and genetics. “Dissection is horrific and unnecessary,” protester Victor Przysiezny said.
However, most biology teachers believe that dissection is an important part of education when done right. “It’s one thing to see it on a computer screen,” said Jaclyn Reeves. “Its another to see the size and scale. Science is about getting your hands dirty.” She added that dissection can inspire students to take up a career in biology or put them off.
At its recent protest in Highland Park, PET A singled out Bio Corp., a company that provides frogs, pigs, turtles, rabbits, cats and other animals and their parts for educational purposes. Following the charges of animal cruelty, Bill Wadd, co-owner of Bio Corp., invited city officials to tour Bio Corp. He said that more than 98 percent of the animals Bio Corp received last year were already dead. “We just take what people would throw away,” Wadd said. “Instead of throwing it in the trash, why not have students learn from it?”
District 113 spokeswoman Christine Gonzales said that district officials would think about using computer images in class instead. “We are always looking for new and innovative methods, because we do want to ensure our kids get the best instruction and are kind to all creatures,” she said.
【1】Who opposes animal dissection?

24、U.S. teens spend more than eight hours a day on screens, and there’s growing concern over how social media may affect their mental health. Now, a new study has found that limiting screen time to about one hour a day helped anxious teens feel better about their body image and their appearance.
The study arose from the personal experience of Helen Thai, a doctoral student in psychology at MeGill University. “What I noticed when I was engaging in social media was that I couldn’t help but compare myself,” Thai says. She was well aware that social media posts often feature polished, airbrushed or filtered images that can alter (改变) appearances in an unrealistic way, but it still affected her negatively.
So, Thai and a team of researchers decided to test whether cutting time on social media platforms including Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat would improve body image. They recruited a few hundred volunteers, all of whom had experienced symptoms of anxiety or depression, which could make them vulnerable to the effects of social media. Half of the participants were asked to reduce their social media to 60 minutes a day for three weeks while the other half continued to use social media with no restrictions, which averaged about three hours per day.
The researchers gave the participants surveys at the beginning and end of the study, which included statements such as “I’m pretty happy about the way I look,” and “I am satisfied with my weight.” Among the group that cut social media use, the overall score on appearance improved from 2.95 to 3.15 on a 5-point scale. This may seem like a small change, but any shift in such a short period of time is striking, the authors say.
“The study is encouraging, but it only included people who had symptoms of anxiety or depression. It’s worth evaluating this approach with other groups, such as people with or at risk of eating disorders. It’s also possible that the benefits of cutting back could extend more broadly to anyone in this age group,” says Psychologist Andrea Graham, co-director of the Center for Behavioral Intervention at Northwestern University.
【1】What problem may social media bring to teenagers according to Thai?
A.They may become addicted to the Internet.
B.They tend to become sensitive to others’ comments.
C.They may have unrealistic expectations of their image.
D.They tend to compare themselves with the images posted online.
【2】What can we learn about the participants during the study?
A.They scored their appearance twice.
B.Half of them stopped using social media.
C.They hoped to improve their body image.
D.Most of them showed dissatisfaction with their weight.
【3】What did Graham think of the study?
A.It was a good try but had limitations.
B.It was well designed but poorly conducted.
C.It was a failure but the methods deserved praise.
D.It was encouraging but the evidence was unreliable.

A.Shorter Screen Time, Better Feelings on Look
