21、 Many animal and plant species have become extinct and many more are in critical danger. Finding ways to protect the earth's wildlife and conserve the natural world they inhabit (居住) is now more important than ever.
Dodo
The Dodo is a classic example of how human caused damage to the earth's biology. The flightless Dodo was native to the Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It lived off fruit fallen from the island's trees and lived unthreatened until humans arrived in 1505. The easily controlled bird became a source of food for sailors and was attacked by animals introduced to the island by humans such as pigs, monkeys and rats. The population of Dodos rapidly decreased and the last one was killed in 1681.
Rhinos
The Rhino (犀牛) horn is a highly prized item for Asian medicine. This has led to the animal being hunted in its natural habitat. Once widespread in Africa and Eurasia, most Rhinos now live in protected natural parks and reserves (保护区). Their numbers have rapidly decreased in the last 50 years, and the animals remain under constant threat from poachers(偷猎者).
The Giant Panda
The future of the World Wildlife Fund's symbol is far from certain. As few as 1,000 remain in the wild. The Chinese government has set up 33 panda reserves to protect these beautiful animals and made poaching them punishable with 20 years in prison. However, the panda's distinct black and white patched coat fetches a high price on the black market and determined poachers still pose (造成) one of the most serious threats to the animals continued existence.
Whales
The International Whaling Commission is fighting to ensure the survival of the whale species. Despite the fact that one-third the world's oceans have been declared whale sanctuaries (保护区),7 out of 13 whale species remain endangered. Hunted for their rich supply of oil, their numbers have decreased to just 300. Collisions with ships, poisonous pollution and being caught in fishing nets are other major causes of whale deaths.
Tigers
The last 100 years has seen a 95% reduction in the numbers of remaining tigers to between 5,000 and 7,000 and the Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers are already extinct. The South China tiger is precariously close to disappearing, with only 20 to 30 still alive. Like the Rhino horn, tigers' bones and organs are sought after for traditional Chinese medicines. These items are traded illegally along with tiger skins.

22、The first time Richard Epstein went to his local ice-skating rink (溜冰场), he was handed a free pair of skates. “Do things out of my comfort zone, and good things happen,” he observes.
This wisdom was borne out last December, when Epstein, a 78-year-old scientist, skated in his exhibition. His wife filmed his routine, which he performed with his coach, then his eldest daughter posted it on Twitter. Nearly 3 million people viewed it. Epstein somewhat can’t understand the response, describing himself as “just an old guy going around in circles”.
Often, when he drives to the rink, he reminds himself that good things follow discomfort. He always feels a little anxious. “There is a risk of failure that I have to get over.” he says.
As a child, Epstein was “really terrible” at sports. He still feels embarrassed that he couldn’t threw a ball straight. “I’m an active person but one of the world’s worst athletes. I don’t have this ‘used to be good’ mentality,” he says. What the does have is a long personal and professional history of embracing (欣然接受) mistakes, and uncertainty.
He used to look back at his childhood self, and think that one day he would feel relaxed and cool and comfortable in his own shin. Maybe ice-skating makes up for clumsiness (笨拙) in childhood? Epstein has also tried snowboarding, rock climbing and inline skating, all of which challenge balance.
At high school, Epstein was streamed in “the medium track”. However, as a scientist, he has always committed to projects with uncertain futures, and worked fruitfully in that unmapped space. The word he comes up with to describe his scientific style and perhaps he would say it applies to the rink too is “clumsy”.
Epstein never lets his old age or fear of failures prevent him from pursuing his passion for exploration. He enjoys how the ice takes him out of his ordinary ways. “There’s the wind blowing through my hair. It is a joy to slide and turn, to get on the inside edge of the skate.”
【1】How did Epstein feel about people’s response to his exhibition video?
A.Anxious.
B.Proud.
C.Confused.
D.Delighted.
【2】What do we know about Epstein’s childhood?
A.He was an average student.
B.He was mentally challenged.
C.He had a good sense of balance.
D.He showed little talent in sports.
【3】What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A.Epstein is too old to manage his own life.
B.Epstein is brave enough to try new things.
C.Fear of failure stops Epstein taking chances.
D.Epstein’s life returns to normal because of ice.
【4】Which of the following might Epstein agree with?
A.Life is full of uncertainties.
B.Creative work lies in wisdom!
C.Age contributes to one’s success.
D.Experience is crucial to one’s career.
23、Heart disease is the most common cause of death in the United States. Over a million people each year will have a heart attack and 25% will die before they get to the hospital or in the Emergency Department.【1】Prevention is the best way so it does not damage your heart and limit your ability to enjoy life. Simple ways might help reduce your risk:Don’t smokeThis means that you should stop smoking as soon as possible if you already smoke, and if you live with a smoker , you should put limits on the smoker.【2】Get moving【3】Find a form of exercise you enjoy enough to want to do it regularly and stick to it. If you have health issues that limit exercise, see your doctor for suggestions and make sure you begin with a program that will not be too challenging for you to keep with it.【4】Make sure you follow a heart prevention diet, even if you don’t have anysymptoms (症状) of heart disease.【5】You should eat a high-fiber, low-fat diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Meats should be lean (瘦的),and fats should be limited to heart healthy fats such as olive oil. Sugars and processed foods should be limited, and fruits and vegetables should make up a large part of your daily meals.

24、When it comes to speeding up, some electric vehicles rely not only on a battery to deliver the necessary wattage, but also on a second source of power called a supercapacitor (超级电容器).
The battery serves as a marathon runner, providing a steady giving-off over a long distance. The supercapacitor is a racer who runs a short distance at top speed, releasing a large amount of energy rapidly. Besides, supercapacitors can be recharged more quickly, too. They can, though, store only a part of the amount of energy which a battery stores, so they soon run out.
Because of this, engineers have been trying for a while to combine the best bits of a supercapacitor with the most useful features of a battery, to make a storage device with both speed and endurance. They are now having some success.
Indeed, NAWA Technologies, France, claims its supercapacitor-like battery could run more than twice the distance of an electric car, allowing it to run for 1,000 km on a single charge. This new device could also, NAWA says, be recharged to 80% of its capacity in as little as five minutes.
Capacitors and batteries work in different ways, so combining them is difficult. A capacitor stores energy physically, in the form of static electricity (静电). This is easily and rapidly released, so capacitors have good power density (the rate at which they move energy, per unit of weight). An acceptable modern supercapacitor has a power density of several kilowatts per kilogram.
Batteries store their energy chemically, in the form of reactive substances in their two electric poles. The electric current is the reason for the battery’s existence. Chemical reactions take time, so batteries have low power density.
A lithium-ion battery (锂电池) of the sort used in electric cars might gather only a tenth of a kilowatt per kilogram. But chemicals can hold a lot of energy, so batteries have high energy density (the amount of energy they can contain, again per unit weight). A Li-ion battery can store 200-300 watt-hours per kilogram (wh/kg). However, supercapacitors generally manage less than 10 wh/kg.
【1】How does the author develop paragraph 2?
A.By making comparisons.
B.By giving figures.
C.By offering examples.
D.By showing definitions.
【2】Why do engineers intend to combine a battery with a supercapacitor?
A.They try to popularize supercapacitors.
B.They hope to overcome all shortcomings of batteries.
C.They dream to produce a practical new electric vehicle.
D.They want to make a storage device with speed and endurance.
【3】What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A.The new battery has been on sale.
B.Capacitors and batteries work in different ways.
C.NAWA is confident in its supercapacitor-like battery.
D.Supercapacitor-like battery can run as far as an electric car.
【4】Why are working theories of capacitors and batteries introduced?
A.To show capacitors and batteries are different.
B.To prove that the combination of the two is difficult.
C.To help us to base scientific researches on theories.
D.To inspire us to learn more about capacitors and batteries.
