  • 21、DEEP DIVE

DEEPEST-KNOWN CAVE SYSTEM — Veryovkina Cave

Veryovkina Cave is currently the deepest-known system. In 2018, scientists reached what may be the bottom at , 257 feet. Dangers, such as rockfalls and floods, lurk (潜藏) at every turn. Why risk it? Scientists could develop new medicines from microbes found in cave samples.

DEEPEST PART OF OCEAN — Mariana Trench

South of Japan lies the deepest place on Earth: the Mariana Trench. The lowest point is called Challenger Deep. It’s 36, 070 feet deep — almost 7 miles! The biggest earthquakes on Earth occur here. Studies of these zones helped scientists confirm the theory of plate tectonics (板块构造论), which explains why earthquakes and volcanoes occur. Pressure in Challenger Deep is bone-crushing, but life still exists.

LOWEST SPOT ON LAND — Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is the lowest point on land at 1, 400 feet below sea level. Ten times saltier than ocean water, the Dead Sea is very dense: you literally can’t sink! Except for a few seasonal streams, only the Jordan River flows into it. No water flows out. It’s in a hot desert, and water evaporates (蒸发) faster than the lake is refilled. All of this lowers the sea by about 3 feet per year! Despite its name, the Dead Sea holds life. A few kinds of algae and bacteria love its salty water. So do people!

    DEEPEST LAKE — Lake Baikal

At just over a mile deep (5, 387 feet), Lake Baikal is the deepest inland body of water. It’s also the oldest and the largest freshwater lake: it holds as much water as all the Great Lakes combined. Scientists love studying Lake Baikal. It’s home to thousands of animals and plants, many of which live nowhere else.

【1】Which place attracts geologists who study earthquakes most?

    A.Veryovkina Cave.

    B.Mariana Trench.

    C.Dead Sea.

    D.Lake Baikal.

【2】What do we know about the Dead Sea?

A.It holds no life forms at all.

B.There is less and less water in it.

C.Only seasonal streams flow into it.

D.Water flows out faster than it is refilled.

【3】In which magazine is this text most likely to appear?

    A.Psychologies.

    B.Women’s Health.

    C.People.

    D.Lonely Planet.

  • 22、Electronic heroes

As an internet influencer, there seems to be nothing special about Miquela Sousa. The 19-year-old lives in Los Angeles, US, posts pictures of herself sporting fashionable looks, and has just made her way into the March edition of Vogue magazine. But Miquela isn't real – she is a computer-generated character.

Her fans don't seem to mind – she has 855,000 followers on US social networking platform Instagram. And her first single Not Mine – yes, she 'sings' too – also reached No. 8 on music streaming (流媒体) platform Spotify last August.

It's kind of curious that in a time when authenticity (真实性) and 'being real' are valued more than ever, 'fake' celebrities like Miquela are appreciated and seen as icons (偶像).

Perhaps the reason for Miquela's popularity lies behind the fame of a similar star, Hatsune Miku. This 16-year-old animated singer from Japan has held singing concerts not only in her home country but also in the US and China.

Even though Hatsune's no more than a 3-D figure projected (投射) onto the stage, her fans are more than willing to pay to actually see her 'in person', because to them, she's better than human singers. 'She's rather more like a goddess: She has human parts, but she transcends (超越) human limitations. She's the great post-human pop star, ' wrote reporter James Verini on Wired magazine.

Critics may say that 3-D stars could never replace the authenticity of humans, but when it comes to being authentic, are humans really the best example of how to do it? Most of us edit our photos before posting them online, and we tend to create a fantasy that we're living a perfect life by letting people only see the brighter side of it.

'Miquela is no less real to me than any other internet stranger with whom I've interacted (互动), ' wrote reporter Leora Yashari on the website Nylon. “Her existence in itself represents a new breed (种类) of influencer – someone who is breaking the boundaries (界限) of what is real and what is fake. '

    1Who is Miquela Sousa?

    A.She's a life-like character with musical talents.

B.She's a new sports star with fashionable looks.

C.She's an experienced singer with thousands of fans.

D.She's an animated figure created by a Japanese company.

2Why did the author mention Hatsune Miku?

A.To show the similarities 3-D stars share.

B.To make a comparison with Miquela Sousa.

C.To explain why 3-D stars are well received.

D.To stress how 3-D stars go beyond human limitations.

3What can be concluded from the last two paragraphs?

A.3-D stars could match the authenticity of humans one day.

B.Animated celebrities are not as real as human celebrities.

C.Human celebrities have greater influence than animated ones.

D.3-D stars' public personalities may be just as authentic as humans'.

  • 23、They may be teenagers, but 17-year-old Brittany Bull and 16-year-old Sesam Mngqengqiswa have grand ambitions—to launch Africa’s first private satellite into space. They are part of a team of high school girls from Cape Town, South Africa, who have designed and built equipment for a satellite that will orbit over the earth’s poles scanning Africa’s surface.

Once in space, the satellite will collect information on agriculture, and food security within the continent. Using the data, “we can try to determine and predict the problems Africa will be facing in the future”, explains Bull, a student at Pelican Park High School. “Where our food is growing, where we can plant more trees and vegetation and also how we can monitor remote areas,” she says. “We have a lot of forest fires and floods but we don’t always get out there in time.” Information received twice a day will go towards disaster prevention.

It’s part of a project by South Africa’s Meta Economic Development Organization(MEDO) working with Morehead State University in the US.

The girls (14 in total) are being trained by satellite engineers from Cape Peninsula University of Technology, in an effort to encourage more African women into STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).

Scheduled to launch in May 2017, if successful, it will make MEDO the first private company in Africa to build a satellite and send it into orbit.

Mngqengqiswa comes from a single parent household. Her mother is a domestic worker. By becoming a space engineer or astronaut, the teenager hopes to make her mother proud. “Discovering space and seeing the Earth’s atmosphere, it’s not something many black Africans have been able to do, or get the opportunity to look at. I want to see and experience these things for myself,” says Mngqengqiswa.

Her teammate Bull agrees, “I want to show to fellow girls that we don’t need to sit around or limit ourselves. Any career is possible—even aerospace.”

1What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

    A. Information provided by the satellite.

    B. The benefits brought by the satellite.

    C. Problems African agriculture faces.

    D. The way the satellite collects information.

2Why are the experts teaching the girls satellite technology?

    A. To turn them into good farmers.

    B. To help African women to live better.

    C. To train employees for a private company.

    D. To attract more African women to sci-tech fields.

3What do you think of the girls in the text?

    A. Ambitious and pioneering.

    B. Generous and considerate.

    C. Independent and modest.

    D. Brave and tolerant.

  • 24、Sunscreens (防晒霜) can offer protection from two types of ultraviolet (UV) rays (紫外线): UVB, which according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, are the chief cause of sunburn and play a key role in the development of skin cancer, and UVA, which get through the skin more deeply and are largely responsible for skin aging and wrinkling, as well as skin cancer risk. The SPF (防晒指数) measurement on sunscreens refers to the UVB protection level — and the number may not mean what you think it does. SPF 15 doesn’t protect you from 15% of UVB rays, just as SPF 100 doesn’t protect you from 100% of the rays. In fact, as you get into the higher numbered SPF sunscreens (think: 50 and above), the difference in UVB protection is actually pretty small.

Theoretically, though the increase in UVB protection with a super-high SPF sunscreen may be not worth considering, it may help, and certainly can’t hurt, to use it — that is, as long as you do so correctly. “The only downside is whether you’re giving yourself a sense of false security,” Dr. Gohara says.

Indeed, as Dr. Wang also pointed out, when people choose increased SPFs, they may actually feel so protected by the product that they finally ignore proper sun protection. “When people use really high SPF products, they tend not to reuse, they tend to stay out in the sun much longer, and they don’t use other protective measures such as clothing and hats,” he says. Regardless of any increase in protection that a high SPF may or may not offer, one thing is certain: It doesn’t give your body a free pass from sunburns, aging, or cancers, and it doesn’t protect you from those things for any greater length of time than the lower SPF options. Both Dr. Wang and Dr. Gohara emphasized that, no matter what the SPF is, it’s important to reapply your sunscreen every two hours.

【1】What rays can cause skin cancer according to the text?

    A. UV   B. UVA   C. UVB   D. UVA&UVB

【2】What can we know about SPF from Paragraph 1?

    A. It tells us the UVB protection level.

    B. Its better to use higher numbered SPF.

    C. SPA100 means preventing 100% rays.

    D. Theres a big difference between SPF 50 and above.

【3】Which of the following can replace the underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 2?

    A. protection     B. disadvantage

    C. result      D. method

【4】Why are we advised to reapply our sunscreen every two hours?

    A. We choose too low SPF products.

    B. The higher SPF can make us stay outside longer.

    C. Clothing and hats are not enough for sun protection.

    D. It can’t completely protect us from aging, sunburns or cancers.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jose’s father died when he was 9 and his mother has barely earned enough to pay the family bills. The dropout rate of the school he attended was high because there were lots of kids from fatherless homes with no money. But Jose was different. He tried to find jobs mowing lawns and delivering newspaper to help his family. He also excelled in math and art at school. He wanted to be a remarkable man.

What Jose expected most was the Boy Scout meeting every Wednesday afternoon. Their scoutmaster, George guided the troop to learn how to give VCR, treat snake bites and identify plants. They climbed at Camp Cherokee and attended the National Scout Jamboree in Virginia. George kept close to the kids. He knew their struggles and wishes. He often dug into his pocket when one of them needed a little extra money. He led the troop with a gentle hand, encouraged them but let the boys find their own way forward. He always said to the boys, “I have always been here for you.” “He was a father figure watching over me,” said Jose. He worshiped George and practiced hard, hoping to win an Eagle Scout badge just like his scoutmaster.

But at the start of his junior year, his family faced a crisis: Maria could not find enough work to keep them from losing their apartment. Besides mowing lawns and delivering newspaper, Jose had to take an afternoon job cleaning offices and one at night making microchips at the manufacturing plant. There was no time left for homework, little for sleep. He missed classes and the weekly Boy Scout meeting. For the first time, his grades slipped.

George sensed the change. “Why are you skipping meetings?” he asked and Jose would only say he had too much work to do.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
