21、(2013·山东卷)Sparrow is a fast-food chain with 200 restaurants. Some years ago,the group to which Sparrow belonged was taken over by another company.Although Sparrow showed no sign of declining, the chain was generally in an unhealthy state. With more and more fast-food concepts reaching the market, the Sparrow menu had to struggle for attention. And to make matters worse, its new owner had no plans to give it the funds it required.
Sparrow failed to grow for another two years until a new CEO,Carl Pearson, decided to build up its market share. He did a survey, which showed that consumers who already used Sparrow restaurants were extremely positive about the chain, while customers of other fast-food chains were unwilling to turn away fromthem.Sparrow had to develop a new promotional campaign.
Pearson faced a battle over the future of the Sparrow brand. The chain's owner now favored rebranding Sparrow as Marcy's restaurants.Pearson resisted, arguing for an advertising campaign designed to convince customers that visits to Sparrow restaurants were fun.Such an attempt to establish a positive relationship between a company and the general public was unusual for that time.Pearson strongly believed that numbers were the key to success, rather than customers' spending power. Finally, the owner accepted his idea.
The campaign itself changed the traditional advertising style of the fast-food industry. The TV ads of Sparrow focused on entertainment and featured original songs performed by a variety of stars.Instead of showing the superiority of a specific product, the intention was to put Sparrow in the hearts of potential customers.
Pearson also made other decisions which he believed would contribute to the new Sparrow image. For example,he offered to lower the rent of any restaurants which achieved a certain increase in their turnover(营业额).
These efforts paid off,and Sparrow soon became one of the most successful fast-food chains in the regions where it operated.

22、Fewer than 250 people have feasted their eyes on the Titanic since it was discovered on the seabed of the North Atlantic Oceans in 1985, but a small number of citizen explorers will make the epic two-mile journey to the depths this year.
OceanGate Expeditions announced its second annual expedition to the wreck in the summer of 2022. The Titanic Expedition is conducted as a series of eight-day missions starting in May and ending in June 2022, and each seat costs $250, 000.
Aaron Newman, OceanGate Expedition Mission Specialist during the 2021 trip, said in a statement: “This is one of the most interesting and unique experiences I have ever had. Less than around 200 people have ever been down to the Titanic and seen the wreck in 110 years. Even diving to almost 4000 meters in a submersible (潜水器) is an experience onto itself. That’s what life is about.”
The citizen explorers will begin their adventure by sailing on the expedition ship from St. John’s in Newfoundland, Canada, to the site of the Titanic wreckage, located 370 miles away. The Titan submersible is equipped with the latest camera technologies to capture ultra-high-resolution imagery (超高清影像) that will help determine the wreck’s rate of decay and assess the marine life that dwell on it. An experienced submersible pilot, P. H. Nargeolet said in a statement: “We have a lot of room inside the Titan submersible. We can have five people in the sub and there is a big view port.”
The Titanic, which was called the “unsinkable ship”, went down on April 14, 1912, four days into her first voyage from Southampton, England to New York. The giant ship collided with an iceberg and in the end, 1,517 of the 2,224 passengers and crew aboard died.
According to the National Oceanic and Atomspheric Adminstration, te ship is likely to collapse within the next 40 years.

23、 Chinese pronunciation puzzled experts in China for a long, long time. How do you recover the sounds immortalized in classical texts? How do you make the old poems rhyme again?
A scholar, Chen Li, reconstructed the language in the 1840s. He's facing a centuries-old problem. He examined the book closely in front of him. It looked old, untidy even. But it had quite a backstory. 1261 years earlier, Lu Fayan outlined what would become the Qieyun. He broke down the sound of each character with two more characters! An upper character to match the initial consonant. And a lower character to rhyme with the final sounds, including the tone. With fanqie, you can capture the sound of a syllable! Simple. And clever.
But it didn't give an overview of Chinese phonology. Rhymers needed to take another step: organize this information into tables The 12h century Rhyme Mirror is full of rime tables. The starting label gives the table number and the kind of rhyme these syllables have. Along the top row are six articulation categories for consonants. And down the side, the four tones. Though the interpretation is debated, confident scholars spent centuries sounding out ancient Chinese syllables and teaching that Chinese had exactly 36 initial consonants.
But Chen Li's not convinced. He's combing through old fanqie and his research revealed flaws.
There weren't 36 initials There were 41. Five of them needed to be split in two. But there's more: the sounds in the rime tables are not the sounds in the Qieyun. Later research will go on to show that even the earlier stage itself is complicated. It's a compromise between ancient literary dialects. All this hard work merely left us with categories.
In the early 1900s, a Swede, Karlgren, traveled to China and added an important piece. He filled out the rime categories with real sounds. Linguists went on to refine these reconstructions of Ancient Chinese. They even revealed small but important distinctions, like chongniu. Actually, it's not a single language called Ancient Chinese. It's a period in linguistic history called Middle Chinese. Because there's an even older language to uncover, a thousand years older sill.
Maybe one day we'll rhyme our way into Old Chinese.
【1】How does the author begin the article?
A.By raising questions. B.By giving an assumption.
C.By illustrating a typical case. D.By describing a unique scene.
【2】What's the shortcoming of Qieyun?
A.It was unpractical to break each character.
B.It gave the detailed information about sounds.
C.It became complex with many different characters.
D.It failed to give an overview of Chinese phonology.
【3】What contributions did Chen Li make to the Chinese phonology?
A.He combed through old Qieyun. B.He found the faults of old Qieyun.
C.He left us with categories and real sounds. D.He made a compromise to ancient dialects.
【4】What's the main idea of this passage?
A.The reconstruction of Qieyun. B.The discovery of Rhyme Mirror.
C.The researches on Chinese phonology. D.The development of Chinese language.
24、The extraordinary Eastgate Building in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city, is said to be the only one in the world to use the same cooling and heating principles as the termite mound(白蚁堆).
Architect Mick Pearce used precisely the same strategy when designing the Eastgate Building, which has no air-conditioning and almost no heating. The building—the country’s largest commercial and shopping complex—uses less than 10% of the energy of a conventional building of its size. The Eastgate’s owners saved $3.5 million on a $36 million building because an air-conditioning equipment didn’t have to be imported.
The complex is actually two buildings linked by bridges across a shady, glass-roofed atrium(天井) open to the air. Fans suck fresh air in from the atrium, blow it upstairs through hollow spaces under the floors and from there into each office through baseboard vents(通风口). As it rises and warms, it is drawn out via ceiling vents and finally exists through forty-eight brick chimneys.
During summer’s cool nights, big fans blow air through the building seven times an hour to cool the empty floors. By day, smaller fans blow two changes of air an hour through the building, to circulate the air which has been in contact with the cool floors. For winter days, there are small heaters in the vents.
This is all possible only because Harare is 1600 feet above sea level, has cloudless skies, little dampness and rapid temperature changes—days as warm as 31℃ commonly drop to 14℃ at night. “You couldn’t do this in New York, with its hot summers and cold winters,” Pearce said.
The engineering firm of Ove Arup & Partners monitors daily temperatures. It is found that the temperature of the building has generally stayed between 23℃ and 25℃, with the exception of the annual hot period just before the summer rains in October and three days in November, when a doorkeeper accidentally switched off the fans at night. And the air is fresh—far more so than in air-conditioned buildings, where up to 30% of the air is recycled.
【1】Why was Eastgate cheaper to be built than a conventional building?
A. It was designed in a smaller size.
B. No air conditioners were fixed in.
C. Its heating system was less advanced.
D. It used rather different building materials.
【2】What does “it” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A. Hollow space.
B. Baseboard vent.
C. Fresh air from outside.
D. Heat in the building.
【3】Why would a building like Eastgate Not work efficiently in New York?
A. New York has less clear skies as Harare.
B. Its dampness affects the circulation of air.
C. New York covers a larger area than Harare.
D. Its temperature changes seasonally rather than daily.
【4】The data in the last paragraph suggests Eastgate’s temperature control system_____.
A. works better in hot seasons
B. can recycle up to 30% of the air
C. functions well for most of the year
D. allows a wide range of temperatures
25、The Long Goodbye to Saturn’s Rings
Of all the planets in our solar system, Saturn might be the prettiest. Those rings gleam in soft pinks, grays, and browns, shimmering in the darkness. But Saturn’s rings aren’t a permanent feature. In fact, they’re ________.
The rings are losing material every year. Incoming micrometeorites (微陨石) and the sun’s radiation disturb the small, dusty pieces of ring matter. The particles(微粒), suddenly transformed, start moving along those invisible paths. When the particles get too ________ to the top of Saturn’s atmosphere, gravity pulls them in, and they vaporize in the planet’s clouds.
Astronomers call this “ring rain,” and over time this and other phenomena will destroy the ________ element that, to us, makes Saturn, until nothing is left. Right now? “This is us looking at Saturn’s rings in their heyday (鼎盛时期),” James O’Donoghue, a planetary scientist at JAXA, Japan’s space agency, told me. A magnificent sight that, from our perspective, seems ________, but, on the grand scale of things, is momentary.
Saturn’s rings have impressed observers for centuries, ________ we got truly close to them for the first time in the early 1980s, when NASA’s Voyager spacecraft sped past during a grand tour of the outer planets. At the time, scientists ________ that the rings probably formed alongside Saturn about 4.6 billion years ago, when the solar system was young, noisy and full of life. Back then, with rocky objects flying around everywhere, a new planet could easily have ________ some, hung them around its middle, and let gravity flatten them.
But Voyager’s flyby suggested a ________ story. The observations captured the rings in greater detail than ever before, revealing that the system didn’t have as much ________ as researchers had predicted, which meant that they couldn’t be billions of years old.
Saturn’s ring system had seemed as ________ as the solar system itself; now it seemed that the rings didn’t exist along with dinosaurs. The solar system had ________ by then, so where would Saturn have gotten the raw material? Then in 2017, a NASA spacecraft called Cassini skimmed past Saturn’s rings, sending home as much information as possible, which ________ what the Voyager missions had observed, that the rings weren’t massive enough to be ancient.
The science community hasn’t come to a(n) ________ about the origin story of Saturn’s rings. But, if the rings are indeed cosmically young, scientists say that they probably formed when one of Saturn’s moons, itself quite old, drew too close and was smashed to bits. The moon was likely a small one; our own moon, O’Donoghue said, could be used to ________ thousands of ring systems like Saturn’s.
The story of Saturn’s rings is a reminder that the worlds of our solar system, however still and ________ they might look from here, are dynamic places, with dramatic histories of their own.

26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成 一篇完整的短文。
I yawned (打哈欠)as I got off the last step of the bus. I had woken early that morning, and had not been able to sleep on the long ride from Riverside High, thinking about that day’s race, the Eye Opener. I had never raced in a state-wide race before. Over thirty high school teams ran, along with quite a few colleges. The rest of my team and I unloaded the bus, and we relaxed and waited for our race patiently.
“Start warming up,” our coach told us, roughly forty-five minutes after we arrived. After finishing our stretches, we headed over to the starting line, eager for the race to begin.
The starter walked to the middle of the field. “There will be two commands,” his voice boomed, ‘‘Runners set, then the gun. If you hear another shot, return to the starting line to start again. ” My heart raced as I got my legs ready to race.
“Runners set!” the starter shouted Bam! The gun fired, and he rushed out of our way. Adrenaline (肾上腺素)rushed through my body as I raced through the mass of runners. As I rounded the first turn, my schoolmates greeted me with heartening shouts. Then, in what felt like only one minute, I arrived at the one mile mark.
“6’10”, a man declared as I ran by. I tried to ignore him, but my legs began to bum as I realized I had run a mile and still had two to go. I slowed down my pace, for I knew the second mile was the worst of all three. Minutes later, I felt horrible. My legs ached, feeling like lead blocks. My vision was clouded as sweat dropped down into my eyes, and my arms felt as if they would fall off if I swung them one more time. Just as I almost reached my limit, a boy passed me. He also seemed to have lost strength but soon he was a little ahead of me.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
