二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Japan's prime minister encouraged the decision to ban viewers, even family members, by issuing a state of emergency order in Tokyo earlier this month in response to rising COVID-19 case numbers.

From the perspective of sports psychologists, an Olympics without fans is a real-life science experiment that is helping researchers and clinicians to comb through the true impact of a crowd of fans on its players—and on viewers at home. The strange circumstances under which the games are held may place unexpected pressure on some athletes. On Tuesday, superstar gymnast Simone Biles dropped out of the women's team event, telling teammates and reporters she wasn't in the right “headspace” to compete. “It's been really stressful this Olympic Games. There are a lot of different variables going into it,” Biles told the Washington Post.

The 2020 Summer Olympics bears similarities and differences to other major sporting events without viewers. The English Premier League supplemented (增加) game broadcasts with crowd noise from the soccer video game FIFA 20, mixed with game audio in real time. A Taiwanese baseball team and German soccer team began populating stands with cardboard cutouts of fans, and the trend caught on internationally.

Jamey Houle, the lead sports psychologist for Ohio State University Athletics and a former Al-American gymnast, says competitive athletes are trained in visualization— imagining performing a certain action or motion, such as doing a roundoff back handspring in gymnastics. Without moving a muscle, players using visualization can solidify neural (神经的) connections and activate their motor cortex (皮层). To visualize most effectively, Houle says, athletes working with sports psychologists will try to simulate as closely as possible the conditions of actual gameplay. Empty stadiums may thus have a measurable impact on players' performance. This phenomenon is grounded in a psychological concept called “social facilitation”, referring to a change in a person's performance that occurs when others are around compared to when a person is alone.

【1】What caused Biles to drop out of the women's team event?

    A.The poor physical condition.

    B.The absence of the audience.

    C.The fiercely competitive event.

D.The influence of crowds of fans.

【2】What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?

A.The Taiwanese baseball team is a success.

B.The tendency mentioned is popular among some sporting events.

C.The 2020 Summer Olympics is stricter in preventing the pandemic.

D.The crowd noise plays a leading role in the English Premier League.

【3】How does Houle explain the impact of empty stadiums on players' performance?

A.By doing a roundoff back handspring.

B.By simulating the conditions of actual gameplay.

C.By using the concept called social facilitation.

D.By changing the viewers of a player.

【4】What message does the author mainly convey in the text?

A.Athletes should be trained in visualization.

B.Audience should be admitted to the Olympics.

C.Social facilitation is helpful to sporting events.

D.Viewers present may influence players' performance.

  • 22、   Robots are now being employed not just for dangerous tasks, such as discovering mines or rescuing people in disasters. They are also finding application as household helps and as nursing assistants. As the number of machines increases, which are equipped with the latest artificial intelligence and take on a growing variety of specialized and everyday tasks, the question of how people see them and behave towards them becomes ever more urgent.

A team led by Sari Nijssen of Radboud University and Markus Paulus, Professor of Developmental Psychology at Ludwig-Maximilians- Universitat (LMU), have carried out a study to determine the degree to which people show concern for robots and behave toward them based on moral principles.

According to Sari Nijssen, the study set out to answer the following question: "Under what circumstances would adults be willing to sacrifice robots to save human lives?" The participants were faced with a hypothetical (假设的) moral dilemma:Would they be prepared to put a single person at risk in order to save a group of injured persons? The intended victim presented in the situations was either a humanoid robot that had been humanized (人性化的) to various degrees or a robot that was clearly recognizable as a machine.

The study suggested that the more the robot was humanized, the less likely participants were to sacrifice it. Situations that included vivid stories in which the robot was described as a merciful being or as a creature with its own understandings, experiences and thoughts, were more likely to stop the study participants from sacrificing it in the interests of anonymous (无名的) humans.

"This result indicates that our study group attached a certain moral status to the robot," says Paulus. "One possible suggestion of this finding is that attempts to humanize robots should not go too far. Such efforts could come into conflict with their intended function—to be of help to us."

1What has become a concern about robots?

A.How to treat them in life. B.How to humanize them.

C.How to use them effectively. D.How to find more applications.

2In the study the participants probably have to decide _______.

A.where to experience risks. B.when to sacrifice a robot.

C.which robot to work with. D.what robots should be like.

3What can be inferred from Paulus' words?

A.Humanized robots offer less help to people.

B.Certain moral status should be attached to robots.

C.Humanizing robots too much may be improper.

D.Conflicts often happen between humans and robots.

4Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A.Robots, a Must for Future B.Robots Saved, People Take the Hit

C.Humanized Robots, a New Trend D.Humanized Robots Replace Human

  • 24、Less than three months after a gunman walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, killing 17 students and teachers, seniors on Saturday night will celebrate their prom.

Still, the Parkland high school prom will be far from ordinary. Not only will it be held under tight security, but there will be a tribute honoring the lives of the four seniors killed during the February 14 tragedy.

With some students still saddened and emotions running high, local businesses, vendors and community members have come together to offer products and services at cost or even free of charge, in hopes of relieving students of their burdens- even if just for a night. The event should involve all the hallmarks of a typical American prom: eye-grabbing decorations, lots of flowers and a dance floor packed with students dressed to the nines.

The biggest contribution came from the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, which has donated a ballroom and catering for the evening. The money saved allowed the prom planning committee to charge as little as $30 per ticket- down from the usual of about $100.

Other businesses also stepped up, offering hairstyling, makeup, photography and even prom dresses. To help ease students' pain, Gabriela Miller, an alumni and salon and spa owner, asked her staff to donate their time and services to girls preparing for the prom. They enthusiastically agreed. On Saturday, Miller and dozens of beauty experts from surrounding communities will do hair and makeup for more than 230 girls.

Apart from business, neighbors also did their part. Shawn Rosenthal, who lives a few miles south of Parkland, felt so moved by the attack that she organized a collection to provide free prom dresses to senior girls. Within days, with the help of her friends, they'd collected more than 100 prom dresses of all colors, shapes and sizes. They caught the eye of the Alumni Association, which was also gathering dresses, and pooled their efforts.

Such a community effort could help the students “heal for a moment.”

【1】What is the prom intended for?

A.The four seniors killed in the tragedy.

B.The surviving seniors in the high school.

C.The 13 victims except the Senior Grade 3.

D.All the 17 students killed in the violence.

【2】Why did the people offer products and services at cost or for free?

    A.To lessen the students' sorrow.

    B.To reduce the expenses.

    C.To enrich the celebrations.

    D.To prepare for the prom.
