24、 Some teenagers think that newspapers are boring and only for adults. But that’s not true. There are many interesting stories in the paper. You just need to make clear what you are looking at. “I spend about half an hour reading newspapers every day,” said 15-year-old Gao Ming from Beijing. “I’m interested in things happening at school.” School news is just one kind of news story in newspapers. There’s also world news from international problems to pop stars. Read the newspaper carefully, we’ll find different types of articles on the pages.
News stories — these stories are about events. Reporters try to show all points of a story to help readers understand what happened. Reporters try to speak to as many people as possible. They also use pictures and numbers to show the readers that the stories are true. The newspaper has lots of news stories on the news page and front page. When we read them, we learn more about the facts, not the writers’ ideas.
Opinion writing — opinion writing is usually about something happening right now. But it isn’t just facts. Here writers add their own opinions to the news. Writers pick only the facts that help back up their ideas. They make readers believe that they are telling the truth. This is usually the kind of story that gets people thinking. Go to “Speak Out” on Page Two for an example of opinion writing in Teenagers.

27、The Boston Marathon(马拉松)is one of the world’s oldest and most famous races. It has a 125-year history. Nearly half the players who take part in the 26.2-mile race are women. But for most of the time in the past, only men were allowed to enter the race.
A woman named Gibb helped change that in 1966. That year she took part in the Boston Marathon and finished faster than most of the men.
Gibb first saw and got to know the Boston Marathon in 1964. And she wanted to run the race herself. For nearly two years, Gibb trained hard to prepare for the race. But when she sent in an application(申请) for the 1966 race, it was refused.
At the time, the longest official (官方的) races for women were only 1.5 miles. Many people didn’t think women were able to run longer than that. But the 23-year-old Gibb refused to give up her dream. She came up with a plan to run the race anyway. On 19th April, she showed up at the marathon. She wore her brother’s shorts and a shirt to disguise that she was a woman.
Gibb hid near the starting line. When the race began, she jumped into the crowd. Shortly into the race, Gibb took off her shirt. To her surprise, the crowd cheered when they realised she was a woman. Gibb finished the race in 3 hours and 21 minutes —faster than two thirds of the men.
In the following years, she and other women ran in the Boston Marathon, even though the rules still stopped women from running in the race. Finally, in 1972, the marathon was opened to women.
