24、A Book Review—The Snake-Stone by Berlie Doherty
The setting: Urban England (the cities), but also rural England (the countryside) including remote English villages.
The theme: The main theme is a teenage search of self-discovery, in this case the search for a mother from whom the hero(主人公) was separated at an early age. It also talks about love, getting on with others, being persistent(坚持不懈的) and trying to deal with doubts, troubles and worries. As the book moves to a close, James, swimming coach says to him, “You are not like a kid following instructions any more. You are diving like a young man who knows where he is going.”
The characters: James is the hero of the story. He is a championship diver, and has a comfortable life with his foster parents(养父母). Yet he also has the qualities to take himself on a long journey to find his birth mother. The other characters in The Snake Stone, James’s parents, his diving coach, best friend, the villagers, people he meets on his journey, are pictured realistically.
The turning point: The turning point in the story comes while James’s foster parents are away in London, and he wonders about the identity(辨认) of his birth mother. The only clue he has is a fossil(化石), “the snake stone” which she left behind along with a note on which she had written: “Take good care of Sammie.” It was written on a letter with parts of an address still there.
The journey: Instead of going to London, James decides to find his birth mother. With help from his geography teacher, James sets out for the remote country village where his mother might be found. James has painful, challenging, but also humorous and happy travels. He finally meets his mother, Anne, and comes to understand why she left him at a stranger’s door fifteen years before. Although the meeting is not long, it leaves him with a feeling of completeness. As a journey of self-discovery, The Snake Stone also provides its readers with a happy ending. 25、From tiny seeds, great discoveries grow. Recently, China’s Chang’e 4 moon lander(登月舱) carried a mini-garden. It became home to the first plant to grow on another world.
This is yet another success for Chang’e 4. On January 3, 2019, the probe (探测器) became the first lander to touch down on the far side (背面) of the moon. This is the unknown face of the moon that is always looking away from us, so we never see it from down here on the earth. Although it is often known as the dark side of the moon, the far side actually gets as much sunshine as the near side. For example, when all we can see is a new moon, the far side of the moon is in full sunlight.
Part of Change 4’s task is to see how a moon base could be built for humans, including exploring whether humans could grow food and other plant products there. Chang’e 4 carried a mini-garden with air, water and soil with seeds planted in it. When plants shoot on the earth, their stems grow away from the gravity (the force that keeps your feet on the ground), and so they always shoot upwards. The moon’s gravity is a sixth as strong as the earth’s, so Change 4’s experiment was a test: would the earth plants know which way was up on the moon? Four days after landing, a tiny cotton shoot showed that they know.
Night has now fallen on the far side of the moon, sunlight will not return until the start of February, both on the near and the far sides. As a result, the cotton shoots died. Besides the darkness, the plants can’t stand the cold (it can drop to -170℃ on the moon at night). However, the experiment is a success, since it has proved that it is possible for plants to grow in space.
【1】Which of the following is TRUE about Change 4?
A.It carried a mini-garden.
B.It landed on the near side of the moon.
C.It built a moon base on the moon.
D.It found plants oh the moon.
【2】What can we know from the text?
A.The far side of the moon gets less sunlight.
B.We can see the far side of the moon from the earth.
C.The stems fail to grow away from the earth’s gravity.
D.The earth plants know the way to grow on the moon.
【3】What can be inferred from the text?
A.Plants have been grown on the moon.
B.It is perfect to do experiments on the moon.
C.The cotton shoots can last for weeks on the moon.
D.We can see a new moon at the start of February.
【4】In which section of a magazine can you read the text?
A.Health and sport.
B.History and culture.
C.Science and technology.
D.Population and environment.
26、Jay Kohl, an American student, posted an online advertisement two weeks ago searching for a Chinese family to stay with so that he can learn the language and culture.
"I'm a clean, non-smoking, and warm-hearted American man looking for a homestay in the Wudaokou area to improve my Chinese language skills,” he wrote. "I'm willing to offer help with English tutoring(家教)and even can help you with applying for foreign universities.”
He still hasn't found a suitable home.
"Most of the families that contacted me seem to be interested in doing business instead of cultural exchange," he said. "I think I might have to rent an apartment in the end.”
Kohl isn't the only foreigner finding it difficult to find a homestay in Beijing. Michael Benson, who wants to come to Beijing in September, has also faced the same problem.
Why is finding a homestay family so difficult? Beijing Today consulted a Chinese teacher, Jessie Xi, who has been teaching foreign students at the University of International Business and Economics for more than six years.
Xi has accepted many homestays, and from her own experience and what she's been told, she said there were four major problems visitors may meet when applying for homestays.
Problem 1:Having too high expectation for language improvement.
Problem 2: Considering oneself as a guest instead of a family member.
Problem 3: Not making clear what a family's rules are beforehand.

27、There are few clear rules in the UK saying drivers should not park on the pavement(人行道). But Scotland, a country of Britain, is planning a complete ban on pavement parking. And, earlier this year, the UK government admitted it was considering changing the law for the other parts of Britain.
Joe Irvin of Living Streets (the UK charity for everyday walking) says there is “no excuse”for the disagreement and has called on the UK government to act the same way.
“Pavement parking is really thoughtless—and if you think about people with wheelchairs, pushchairs, or sight impairment (受损), they have to go out on to the road,” says Mr Irvin.
Steve Hynd, from Bristol, said his father, who uses a wheelchair, had recently ended up in hospital after a parked car had blocked his path.
“My dad’s experience was near his care home,” he says. “He was trying to wheel himself back inside and a car had parked up on the pavement. He tried to get around it and fell out of his wheelchair. He went to hospital. He’d hurt his head and got a black eye where his glasses had gone in.”
Groups such as the AA and RAC admit “some streets”should not allow pavement parking if it causes problems to emergency vehicles(紧急车辆) but they do not believe in a complete ban across the country.
AA president Edmund King says, “We would be worried if there was a total ban. It is clearly possible in i some areas to park on the pavement while still allowing room for pushchairs or people In wheelchairs to pass do not believe in a complete ban across the country.”
AA president Edmund King says, “We would be concerned if there was a total ban. It is clearly possible in some areas to park on the pavement while still allowing room for pushchairs or people In wheelchairs to pass.”
Hugh Bladon of the Alliance of British Drivers argues a complete ban would cause serious problems as some streets were so narrow.
The simple way to deal with the problems, Mr. Bladon believes, is that all drivers must leave at least one metre between their car and the inside of the pavement to allow people with pushchairs and so on to pass by.

A.Give equal rights to drivers in the UK.
B.Prevent Scotland from making the law.
C.Ban pavement parking totally in the UK.
D.Find more ways to protect walking people.

A.He is against it.
B.He is uncertain of it.
C.He feels hopeful about it.
D.He pays little attention to it.
【3】What does Hugh Bladon want drivers to do when parking?
A.Be careful with cars on the pavement.
B.Stop parking on the pavement forever.
C.Allow people with pushchairs to go first.
D.Leave enough space for pavement walkers.
