24、While most teens are busy with sports, friends, and online games, Xiuhtezcatl Martinez is working to save the planet. He is one of the most famous environmental activists (积极分子) in the world.
So how does a teenager become a well-known environmental activist?
“I grew up in a family where people were always thinking about the environment,” says Xiuhtezcatl.
When Xiuhtezcatl was just 6 years old, he decided he had to do something about climate (气候) change — a serious environmental problem. Scientists have been studying climate change for many years. They know that Earth’s climate changes on its own over time. But right now, it is changing more and more quickly than usual because of pollution created by people — by the cars, trucks and planes we ride in, and by the coal and oil we burn for electricity.
Xiuhtezcatl points out that climate change is a serious problem. “People can feel very helpless about climate change, like there is nothing they can do,” he says. But that is not true. “Humans caused climate change,” Xiuhtezcatl says. “And we can try to solve it.”
Xiuhtezcatl began looking for solutions (解决办法) when he was just a little kid. His elder brothers and sisters ran an environmental group called Earth Guardians, which was started by their mom. First he listened when they had meetings. Soon he was traveling around the country and the world. His goal? To educate and inspire people to join the fight against climate change.
Today Xiuhtezcatl runs Earth Guardians. The group works with thousands of kids around the world. He speaks to students in classrooms about steps they can take to help the planet. And he writes and performs hip-hop songs about the environment. Xiuhtezcatl believes that if many people change their habits, we can reduce (减少) the causes of climate change.

25、 Where did humans come from? An Australian researcher believes that she’s found the answer: river valley in the African country of Botswana (博瓦纳).
Professor Vanessa Hayes from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney said she and her team have traced (追踪) modern humans back to small group of people who lived in this valley, according to the BBC.
“It’s an extremely large area, it would have been very lush (苍翠繁茂的), and it would have actually provided a suitable habitat for modern humans,” she said. She and her team studied mitochondrial (线粒体的) DNA (mtDNA) from people who live in south Africa, such as the Khoisan people. This type of DNA is only passed down from mother to child. This makes it easier to trace one’s ancestry (祖先), according to Business Insider. By tracing mtDNA back through different generations, the team concluded that every person alive today is related to a woman who lived in Botswana.
However, some experts doubt Hayes’ findings, saying that studies like hers are no longer important or necessary. “The idea that we’re looking for a single origin [of modern humans] is out of fashion,” said John Hawks, a researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, US, in Popular Science.
There are many other locations around the world where humans could have gotten their start. It is likely that mankind appeared in many places at the same time. “I increasingly think that there probably wasn’t a single population in which modern humans evolved (进化). If that is the case, there is no ‘homeland’,” said Ryan Raaum, who researches African population genetics (遗传学) at Lehman College, US.
【1】According to Hayes, where did humans come from?
A.Australia. B.Botswana. C.South Africa. D.Latin America.
【2】Hayes and her team studied mtDNA because ________.

A.important B.wrong C.fascinating D.unnecessary
【4】What is the story mainly about?
A.New findings about the origin of humans. B.New findings about mtDNA.

Because they don't spend much time with me,they always feel guilty (内疚的) and will buy me many expensive things and let me do whatever I want. My grandparents never let me do any chores because they want me to do my schoolwork.
I used to take everything for granted (理所当然) and I never said “thank you” to people. As time went by,I found that my classmates didn't like me and my best friends left me. One day,I asked Leo, who used to be one of my best friends. He said that I was mean (自私的),rude and bad-tempered (坏脾气).“No one wants to make friends with a person who always receives but never gives anything!”he said. I was shocked at his words. “Oh,no! Please don't leave. I need friends! I will be lonely and unhappy without friends!” I locked myself up in the room and cried. “I want my friends back. But how?”
Then I noticed that all the popular kids in the class are friendly to others. They always smile and say “thank you” to others. They do whatever they can to help when others are in trouble. Other kids like them and always play with them. “I need to change! I will get my friends back,” I said to myself. From then on,I started to change myself. I learned to say “thank you” to others,I smiled and volunteered to help other kids. I tried to be as nice as I could. Gradually, I found that other kids liked to talk with me and they would ask me to play with them and even told me their secrets. My friends came back to me again.
Now I have more friends than I used to have and I am happier than I used to be.
