二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In a paper published recently in Nature Communications, the authors, including experts from China’s Tsinghua University, said that most of the current electricity demand in advanced, industrialized nations can be met by some combination of wind and solar power. “Wind and solar could meet more than 80 percent of demand in many places without crazy amounts of storage or additional generating ability, which is the critical point (临界点),”said co-author Steve Davis,UCI professor of Earth system science,“if we want to have a zero-carbon emission (排放) future without using fossil energy resources”.

The team analyzed 39 years’ worth of hourly energy demand data from 42 major countries to evaluate the adequacy of wind and solar power resources to serve their needs. They found that a full shift to sustainable power resources can be easier for lower-latitude (低纬度的) countries, which can rely on solar power availability throughout the year. The researchers highlighted Germany as an example of a relatively smaller country, in terms of land mass, at higher latitude which will make it more challenging to meet its electricity needs with wind and solar resources.

“Historic data show that countries which are farther from the equator (赤道) can occasionally experience periods during which there is very limited solar and wind power availability,” said lead author Dan Tong, assistant professor of Earth system science at Tsinghua University. “One recent occurrence of this phenomenon in Germany lasted for two weeks, forcing Germans to turn to dispatchable (可调度的) generation, which in many cases is provided by fossil fuel-burning plants.” Among the approaches the researchers suggested to alleviate this problem are building up generating capacity, developing long-term storage capabilities and pooling resources of multiple nations on a continental land mass to make the burden lighter to a certain country.

“Europe provides a good example to help people produce net-zero carbon electricity,” said Tong. “A lot of consistency and reliability could be provided by a system that includes solar resources from Spain, Italy and Greece with plentiful wind available in the Netherlands, Denmark and the Baltic region.”

【1】What does Steve Davis imply by saying “critical point”?

A.Carbon emission will be reduced by using wind and solar power.

B.Electricity demand will be beyond human control in the future.

C.Electricity generating can be replaced by wind and solar power.

D.Fossil energy will be used with zero-carbon emissions in the future.

【2】What can make a country rely on solar power all the year?

A.Having a large land of its own.

    B.Having a small population.

    C.Being developed in all respects.

    D.Being located near the equator.

【3】What does the underlined word “alleviate” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Ease.

    B.Stress.

    C.Accept.

    D.Arrange.

【4】What can we learn from Tong’s words in the last paragraph?

A.People can solve increasing energy demand in the future like Europe.

B.Most countries in Europe have a lot of solar resources to make electricity.

C.Europe has done a good job in producing net-zero carbon electricity.

D.Countries like Spain, Italy and Greece have plenty wind resources.

  • 22、On television all over the world, there are programs about the work of the police. They are popular because they are usually very exciting. In London, there is a television program called “Police Five”—because it is on for five minutes once a week. A television reporter, Shaw Taylor, talks about crimes in the London area. • 23、Daily News—San Francisco chef Cecilia Chiang, who first changed the stereotypes about Chinese cuisine in the United States, died Wednesday. She was 100.

Chiang was the owner, chef and mastermind behind the game-changing San Francisco restaurant, the Mandarin. She is widely credited with bringing real Chinese food to America and was a celebrity chef before celebrity chefs were popularized.

Chiang, who was born near Shanghai, came from an upper-class Chinese family. Although she wasn't shy about admitting her good fortune, she faced other, perhaps more hard-won obstacles. To convince the dining public that Chinese food didn't have to be Thursday's cheap take-out option, Chiang had her work cut out for her, when she moved to the Bay Area in 1959. She insisted on showing diners the refined side of Chinese food and wanted to upgrade the Chinese dining experience. To do this, she also needed to be aware of aesthetics.

The Mandarin did not serve chop suey or chow mien, two standard dishes on every Chinese restaurant in the US at the time. But this is exactly what Chiang wanted to avoid. In fact, her early encounter with Chinese food in America had left her determined to show San Francisco what Chinese food was really like.

“She deliberately and constantly supported outsiders trying to make their mark in food,” her granddaughter, Siena Chiang said. “I hope she is a signal and an inspiration to people with marginalized identities to always believe in your own worth and knowledge, and not to give into other cultures.”

【1】What is the best title of the passage?

A.Celilia brought real Chinese food to America.

B.Celilia opened a game-changing restaurant in San Francisco.

C.Celilia, a great chef of Chinese cuisine, died at the age of 100.

    D.Celilia, a chef celebrity.

【2】Which of following can best replace the underlined phrase “had her work cut out ”?

A.Cut her work into small parts.

B.Had lots of work to do.

    C.Reached out for help.

    D.Was out of her job.

【3】What did Celilia Chiang do to change Americans’ impression on Chinese cuisine?

    A.To be an aesthetician.

B.To stop offering takeout food on Thursday.

C.To serve chop suey or chow mien.

D.To improve the Chinese dining experience.

【4】What can we learn from Sienna Chiang’s words?

A.Celilia encouraged outsiders to value their own culture.

B.Celilia is a signal and an inspiration to Americans.

C.Celilia adjusted Chinese food according to American culture.

D.Celilia competed with outsiders in making their mark in food.

  • 24、The continuous increase in the number of COVID-19 cases worldwide has had a deep and broad effect on how we live and interact with one another, resulting in many changes that are likely to be long-lasting.

For example, to reduce contact during COVID-19, shaking hands, a standard style of greeting used by officials and businessmen has been replaced. In the US, the country hardest-hit by the outbreak, with over 36 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and more than 610, 000 deaths, the top health official said such social gatherings should end, even when COVID-19 is over. Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told The Wall Street Journal, “I don’t think we should ever shake hands ever again, to be honest with you.” Neel Gandhi, a professor at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, told ESPN, a US sports broadcaster, “When we talk about transmission, the hands are the place that I focus on the most.”

If such advice from health experts is followed, it will produce a big shift in human behavior. However, some people are finding alternative ways to greet one another at a time when direct contact is disapproved of. In South Korea, bowing deeply has become popular. In Australia, officials have suggested that people pat each other on the back instead of shaking hands.

Handshakes are just one form of contact that has largely ended during COVID-19, along with hugging and high-fives. As many people worldwide rebuild their social lives, experts are predicting that some degree of social contact will disappear for good.

Chen Xuefeng, deputy director of the Institute of Psychology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said, “In the post-COVID-19 era, people are likely to behave more discreetly for a while. They will pay more attention to themselves, such as caring for their health, spending more time alone, moving offline activities online, socializing less and saving more.” Chen added, “This new way of life means that some industries where old habits are deep-rooted will face challenges in upgrading.”

【1】What does Anthony Fauci suggest doing in the face of COVID-19?

    A.Avoiding handshakes.

    B.Ending social gatherings.

    C.Moving offline activities online.

D.Using a standard style of greeting.

【2】How does the author show the big change in human behavior in paragraph 3?

    A.By example.

    B.By data.

    C.By experiment.

    D.By imagination.

【3】What does the word “discreetly” in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.Confidently.

    B.Carefully.

    C.Technically.

    D.Roughly.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.Old unnecessary habits worldwide.
