  • 21、Just what is a tiger mother? Amy Chua is a law professor at America’s Yale University and her recent book on the subject is making waves. She’s been called “dangerous”,“outrageous”,even a “monster” for her descriptions of how she brought up her two daughters.

Her book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother describes fighting with a daughter for hours at the piano to ensure the child gets a piece of music right. She rejected birthday cards made for her by her girls because she didn’t think they had made enough effort. She compared one child negatively with the other, threatening to burn their toys. Her rules include: schoolwork always comes first; an A-minus is a bad grade; children must be two years ahead of their classmates in math, and playing the violin or the piano is a must. Ms. Chua considers the Chinese hard work ethic as a way of creating happy, successful children—at least in her case. Although she’s had a large amount of flak for her theories, one thing can’t be ignored—the success of Chinese children in the education system.

In Britain, shocking research shows that Chinese girls, for example, are outperforming all other foreign groups at GCSE—79 percent getting 5 A—C Grades, compared with 58 percent of white British girls. So what is it about Chinese parenting that’s leading to high achievers? And how do Amy Chua’s theories play into that success?

She told me that if her daughter came back from school with 96/100 in a test, Chua would ask her what happened to the other 4 points. It’s about always knowing “you can do better”,she told me. Interestingly, in China, the birthplace of the tiger mother, people are moving away from traditional Chinese parenting. They are following more western parenting styles.

【1】What can we learn about Amy Chua according to Paragraph 2?

A.She is very strict with her children.

B.She doesn’t think her children are clever.

C.She is very interested in playing the piano.

D.She knows playing is important to children.

【2】The underlined word “flak” in the third paragraph probably means“________”.

    A.attention  B.criticism  C.curiosity  D.contribution

【3】It can be inferred from the text that ________.

A.Amy Chua will change her methods

B.Amy Chua considers her methods useful

    C.Amy Chua’s children don’t love their mother

D.Amy Chua’s children prefer western parenting styles

  • 22、Studying is one of those things that's easy to lose motivation (动力) for.【1】. And there are several ways to make sure your studying is stress-free and even fun.

    Remember Why You Study

The first thing to do is to remember why you're studying. Reasons to study may include keeping up your overall grades or passing a class. 【2】. This can go a long way in motivating you to start.

    【3】

Your environment has an effect on your emotional state. So make sure you're studying in a place that helps. Try cleaning and tidying up your desk and remove distractions from your space as well, like cell phones. It also may be a good idea to make sure you're not so comfortable in your workspace that you fall asleep or feel lazy. 【4】.

    Change Locations

Sometimes, your typical studying location may get boring. If you're having a hard time motivating yourself, try moving to a new environment to study. Going to the local library or a coffee shop can make you feel like you're really "doing something" and can promote your motivation. If you can't go to a library or coffee shop, you can try just moving your work into another room.

【5】. So if you take action first, your motivation may end up making a surprise appearance after all.

    A.Clear Your Desk

    B.Prepare Your Environment

    C.Environment can influence your emotions

D.In short, motivation actually often follows action

E.But regaining motivation for studying isn't impossible

F.Take some time to reflect on what your reason for studying might be

G.Sitting upright at a desk can put you in the right mental mood to dig into your work

  • 23、   This week my client asked me whether I will be working between Christmas and the New Year. I did not know. I had been charging full speed ahead and had not thought about it. I am grateful to my client for motivating me to look up from my computer and take a moment to reflect on 2020 ending and 2021 approaching.

The end of December is a time when people share their reflections on how the last year has gone, and set resolutions in the hope that they will do better in the New Year. However, considering the uncertainty of carrying out resolutions, I invite you to consider the idea of setting intentions now.

Take a moment to reflect on how resolutions work for you.

The Cambridge dictionary defines resolutions as ‘a promise to yourself to do or to not do something’. The first thing that comes to mind when I read this is: what happens when we break the promise to ourselves?

This is typically how it goes for me: Throughout January I am going strong with those resolutions. Then comes mid-February, the novelty (新鲜劲) of the resolutions fades, with the increased demands of life. At last, those resolutions start to take a backseat. This brings a frustration or disappointment at “not succeeding” and a gradual abandonment of the resolutions as though they were never really important. By the next New Year, I would have forgotten what my resolutions were in the first place.

If setting New Year resolutions works for you, then go tor it.

    Setting intentions

What if we try setting intentions instead?

Intentions are based on what our values are, i.e., what is important to us in different areas of our life such as our physical health, mental health, career, hobbies and relationships with family, friends, partners and education. They have a broader focus on the present moment and on how we act now. They give us a direction and determination that empower us to achieve goals and meanwhile live a meaningful life in the present.

【1】Why did the author mention his conversation with the client?

    A.To summarize the whole text.

B.To introduce the topic he'll discuss.

C.To show what a busy life he lived.

D.To inform the New Year is coming.

【2】What can we learn about the author's resolution?

    A.He didn't make it.

    B.He forgets it on purpose.

C.He likes to make it big.

D.He often fails to realize it.

【3】Which can be seen as an example of setting intentions?

A.David determines to pass TOEFL next year.

B.Cathy hopes to be cheerful at the party today.

C.Tom aims to have his own car after graduation.

D.Elizabeth promises to lose weight in one year.

【4】What does the underlined word “empower” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Enable.

    B.Force.

    C.Persuade

    D.Order

【5】What could be the best title for the passage?

A.Reflecting On the Past, a Good Habit?

    B.Setting New Year Resolutions, Difficult?

C.Carrying Out Resolutions, a Piece of Cake?

D.Setting New Year Resolutions or Living with Intentions Now?

  • 24、There are two grand ambitions now for computer science truly intelligent machines and use for quantum computers recent developments suggest not only that these goals should be achievable but that they could be closer than we think.

Take the quest to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) — AIs that go well beyond being good at one specific task, but can instead do anything a human can. Some people still think this is impossible. And yet analysis of AIs designed to master human language has prompted other experts to suggest that AGI might only be a matter of scaling up current technology. Build gigantic AIs and true, human-level intelligence will come, they say.

This “scaling hypothesis” has come to the fore largely thanks to GPT-3, an AI released by San Francisco-based OpenAI last year that generates remarkably fluent streams of human language on command. GPT-3 is just a scaled-up version of GPT-2, a similar predecessor. This new neural network boasts an order of magnitude more parameters, equivalent to the number of synapses linking neurons in real brains, than its forerunner.

Researchers who evaluate such language AIs have been surprised by just to know how much more advanced GPT-3 is than GPT-2. It can do things it wasn’t trained to do, for example, and there are hints that it might be capable of human-like reasoning.

Time will tell if the scaling hypothesis is right. In the meantime, it will be interesting to see if the AI players was the deepest pockets, such as DeepMind, following OpenAI’s focus on scaling.

However when it comes to genuinely use for quantum computers there is no doubt that scaling is key— we are going to need machines with thousands of qubits, the quantum version of a classical bit. This is why the news that researchers have demonstrated a viable way to make sure those qubits don’t constantly fall prey to errors is a big deal. We might finally have a way to scale up the number of operational qubits to what we need.

There are still no guarantees. Even so, it seems that computer science is striding into the 2020s in rude health.

【1】Which of the following has the closest meaning to “scaling up” underlined in Paragraph 2?

    A.increasing

    B.revising

    C.upgrading

    D.expanding

【2】What can we infer from the passage?

A.GPT-3 is way more advanced than GPT-2.

B.GPT-3 is totally different from GPT-2.

C.The number of operational qubits is not sufficient enough.

D.It won't be long before we see truly intelligent machines.

    【3】According to the passage, ________

A.genuinely useful quantum computers could come earlier than expected.

B.experts firmly believe artificial general intelligence (AGI) is only a matter of time.

C.researchers have demonstrated a practical way to scale up the current technology.

D.it is guaranteed that the scaling hypothesis will prove right.

【4】What is the author's attitude towards development in computer science?

    A.doubtful

    B.optimistic

    C.uncertain

    D.pessimistic

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

At nine years old, I went through more than the usual amount of change for a girl of my age. In the past few months, my stable and predictable life had been turned upside down when my parents lost their jobs because of the economic crisis. This set into motion a series of events, including my parents losing our beautiful Victorian home and forcing our family into a fifteen - foot pull trailer we’d previously only used for weekend camping trips.

Life in the trailer was tough. We were incredibly crowded. When Mom, Dad, my brother and I all sat on the sofa at the end of the trailer, the entire front end began to tip in our direction, forcing one of us to jump up and rush to the front. Worse still, our food was not enough.

One day, my mother sat at the small table and casually wrote a wishing list on a paper towel — all about food, while keeping an eye on the last of our food, fried chicken, on the stovetop. “We need to pray,” she said aloud. “We don’t have enough food to last the week.” Then we joined hands and asked God to offer us some food.

Then Mom left the wishing list on the table, got up and started putting the chicken on a plate for dinner. I opened the tiny door and let the smell of dinner follow me as I wandered outside to find my dad. He was working on our broken-down truck. As Dad leaned over the engine, I noticed a disheveled man walking up to our trailer.

“Can I help you, sir?” my dad asked in his friendly way.

“I’m hoping you can,” he said, “I’m hungry and was wondering if you had any food to spare.”

I looked up at Dad, knowing we didn’t have much.

“Sure!” Dad said without hesitation. He brushed off his hands and went inside, quickly returning with a fresh piece of fried chicken wrapped in a paper towel. The man’s face lit up.

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
