二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A CV is a sales document; it conveys the information of what you are looking for and why. Why you are qualified for such work, covering your previous work experience, education, qualification and interests, so effort should be made to make CV as clear as possible in order to sell you most effectively for the post which you are applying for.

    Profile

The profile should be a short sentence stating clearly:

•What work you are looking for

    • What you have to offer (Why you are qualified)

I believe in starting the CV with a profile. This explains to the employer what you are looking for and summarizes all of the attributes ( 特质) that can be found in detail on the rest of your CV.

The employer knows what they are looking for. If your profile states this in summary, then you are making their job a lot easier and they are more likely to put you in the “yes" pile, as they quickly check a large volume of CVs.

    Work Experience

Work experience should come directly after the profile in reverse chronological  (反向时间 顺序) order. The first thing an employer will look at is the last job you have had and if you had the relevant experience or achieved something relevant to the job you are applying for in previous roles.

    Education

Education should be also in reverse chronological order.

    Other Qualifications

If you have attended any training courses or have industrial qualifications they should be entered here. Remember this is a sales document ― list everything you have done here — sell yourself!

    Interests

Qualify you hobbies and interests. Do not mention a thing like "I like to go running" without qualifying it as to what has been achieved. For example, it would be better to say “I am part of the Harriers running club.” or “I recently completed the Great North Run."

1If your profile states your attributes in summary, you'll____.

A.make your job a lot easier

B.be sure to persuade the employer

C.be more likely to get the job

    D.fail to pass the interview

2To write a good CV, you have to _______.

A.tell everything you've experienced in detail

B.place the Profile after the Work Experience

C.use only short sentences to express yourself

D.present the relevant facts to the employers

3Which is the most concerned by the possible employer?

    A.Your interests.

    B.Your last job.

    C.Your training courses.

    D.Family background.

  • 23、Climbing, I once thought, was a very manly activity, but as I found my way into this activity, I came to see that something quite different happened on the rock.

I started climbing when I was an undergraduate in Liverpool. I didn’t come from a climbing family, but I reveled in outdoor activities. I often swam in rivers and pools, walked around in fields and went out for Sunday walks in the hills and woods. Moving to Liverpool was quite a contrast. Suddenly, I was in a busy city environment, surrounded by streetwise kids. It was fun, but I felt out of place.

Therefore, I joined the university mountaineering club. I began climbing inside an old church in Liverpool and instantly fell in love with the sport. Indoor climbing was safe, warm and fun. It made me sociable. I loved placing my body on the wall and following the lines of hold-ups towards the ceiling. I soon got the hang of climbing. When the climbs went well, everything flowed in a delightful dance.

With those same mountaineering friends, I began rock climbing. But climbing on real rock did not bring me the same instant rush of pleasure. Fumbling (笨拙地摸找 ) for routes and following more experienced male leaders, I struggled with moves and was frequently told off for using my knees on crags (峭壁) — apparently that was bad form. I fell off and hung on the rope, shouting for help from my partner who would do his best to help me by shouting out directions down from the top of the crag.

But climbing has taught me to better deal with risk, understanding my own vulnerability while also developing strengths I never had before. I have gained an insight into the movements between people and stone. Working with gravity, geology and rhythms of weather, I gain a unique relationship with the earth. This connection lies at the heart of my passion for rock climbing.

【3】What can we say about the author’s rock climbing experience at first?

  • 24、Interviewer: Good evening, and welcome to Between the Pages. This evening, I’ll be talking to Dr. Richard Fairhurst, whose new book The New Age of Invention has just been published. Welcome, Richard!

Richard: Thank you. It’s a pleasure to be here.

Interviewer: I guess you have been asked about the title of your book before. It suggests that the present day is a new age for inventions, but many people might think that the great age of invention is over.

Richard: Well, that’s an interesting point. There have been golden ages of invention throughout history. Think of the four great inventions in Ancient China: gunpowder, papermaking, printing and the compass. These things changed the world forever. Then there were the great Western inventions: the steam engine, the telephone and the radio. And now, we find ourselves in the great new age of technology.

Interviewer: So are most of the new great inventions tech-based?

Richard: A lot, yes. For example, advances in virtual reality and wearable tech, as well as the flexible battery, mean we should soon be seeing further developments. In addition, important advances have been made in medicine and environmental science thanks to increasing computer power.

Interviewer: Can you give us some examples?

Richard: Sure. New inventions like 3D printers have been used to make replacement hearts and bone parts. In terms of the environment, it is now possible to create an intelligent walking house. It is capable of using GPS technology to travel to different places, with computing technology controlling its “legs”. What's more, huge advances in solar technology mean it can be eco-friendly, too.

Interviewer: Impressive stuff! I’ve also been told that you’re an inventor yourself. Is that correct?

Richard: Yes, I am, but I’m only one member of a big team — most inventors now work as part of big international teams.

Interviewer: I see. So what is it that inspires us to invent things?

Richard: Most inventions start with recognising a problem that needs a solution. This was no doubt the reason behind the invention of the wheel in ancient times, which much later developed into the car.! Now, reduced energy supplies and environmental pollution have led to more advances in the technology of new energy vehicles. But what remains important is that we have an incredible desire to think and create, and that’s the real spirit of invention.

Interviewer: One last question. This is the one everyone really wants to know: will anybody ever invent a time machine?

Richard: I think you’ve been watching too many movies! Nothing like this has been invented yet and I’d say we’re a long way from an invention like that at the moment! But, as they say, “Never say never!”

【1】What do we know about Dr. Richard Fairhurst?

A.He is an interviewer of a TV programme.

B.He is the director of Between the Pages.

C.He is a doctor from the local hospital.

D.He is the author of The New Age of Invention.

【2】Richard introduces the four great inventions in Ancient China in order to show .

B.his broad knowledge in the field of science in the past

C.the existence of the golden ages of invention in history

D.their uselessness for the development of the society now

B.The desire to solve problems inspires invention.

C.Environment is a top concern in the new great inventions.

D.At of today’s great inventions are based on technology.

【4】What is Richard’s attitude towards the time machine?

A.He considers it possible to invent a time machine.

B.He is quite indifferent to the invention of a time machine.

C.He thinks it unrealistic to see a time machine on the screen.

D.He is sure that a time machine will not be invented.

    A.Computer Technology

    B.A Famous Inventor

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What’s worse, he found that he only had one dime left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn’t eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at a door, thinking about what to say when it was opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. “What can I do for you?” asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while, “Would you please give me some...a drink of water?” the boy dared not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied with a warm smile on her face. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.”Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point.

Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give an effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.
