  • 22、   You may have come across several “strange” cultural practices; some would grip you with fear, while others would leave you astonished. The wife-carrying competition in Finland falls into the latter category.

Strange as it might sound, wife-carrying is a real sport in Finland. In fact, it is a highly competitive sport in which male competitors race while each carrying a female teammate. The objective is for the male to carry the female through a special obstacle track in the fastest time. The length of the official track is 253.5 metres with two dry obstacles (障碍) and a water obstacle about one metre deep.

The first modern-day wife-carrying event was held in Finland in 1992 and foreign competitors gained admission in 1995. This event is now held annually in Sonkajärvi, Finland as the World Championship.

Although many might consider the sport a joke, competitors take it very seriously. Like every serious sport, the wife-carrying competition also has its guidelines which are set by the International Wife-Carrying Competition Rules Committee. While the International rules are the basis for all competitions, rules and prizes do vary for each competition.

It is not mandatory that you must be legally married to the “wife” to be carried, she may even be your neighbour’s wife or even someone you met during the competition; she must, however, be over 17 years of age. And her minimum weight must be 49 kilograms; otherwise, she will be burdened with a rucksack containing additional weight to bring the total load to be carried up to 49 kg. All participants must enjoy themselves. Yes, that is also one of the rules.

Special prizes go to the most entertaining couple, the best costume, and the strongest carrier. And for the grand prize, the wife’s weight in beer goes to the couple who completes the course in the shortest time. Whether you win or lose, the good thing is the sport encourages team spirit among couples.

1Which can’t be used to describe the wife-carrying competition?

    A.Fearful. B.Astonishing.

    C.Competitive. D.Serious.

2What is true about the competition?

A.The first event was in 1992.

B.The rules are flexible for each competition.

C.The official track is 253.5 metres long and 1 metre deep.

D.By no means can wives weighing less than 49 kg participate in it.

3What does the underlined word “mandatory” in paragraph 5 mean?

    A.Important. B.Necessary.

    C.Strange. D.Possible.

  • 23、Many organizations learned in the past year that remote work can be highly effective, with 83% of employers surveyed saying that the shift to remote work has been successful for their company, according to a PwC study. In addition, 54% of workers want to continue working remotely after the pandemic. Now that it’s clear where the work is done is not as important as people once thought, the other dimension of flexibility that workers desire for is the freedom to determine when the work is done. A 2019 study by the International Workplace Group found that 80% of workers would turn down a job that did not offer a flexible work schedule for one that did, and 76% of workers said they’d consider staying at their current employer if they could work flexible hours.

According to a Microsoft Work Trend Report, the 9-to-5 workday is disappearing, as the increase in remote work has allowed for more flexible hours. Employees are increasingly working asynchronously completing tasks on their own schedules, which may be different from those of their colleagues. Asynchronous work is now essential to being part of a modern, digital economy, staying competitive in the war for talent, and building a globally distributed workforce.

Tsedal Neeley, a Harvard Business School professor, says, “Companies have to profoundly rethink what it means to be part of a modem work structure. This idea of 9-to-5 or face-time culture is actually not helpful for a digitally advanced economy.” She highlights that underlying face-time culture is the need to monitor or see people in order to feel like work is advancing. However, this assumption that being productive requires seeing people do the work is not only limiting, but also ridiculous, as technology and automation are increasingly used to get work done and are inherently not as observable. Asynchronous work, she adds, is “a completely new mindset in line with a digital economy.”

【1】What job would most workers accept according to the studies in Paragraph 1?

A.They can enjoy the flexibility of working hours.

B.They are free to decide how the work is done.

C.They can work in a remote place as they wish.

D.They work from 9 am to 5 pm during the workdays.

【2】Which of the following can best replace asynchronously in Paragraph 2?

    A.On their own.

    B.In the meanwhile.

    C.With ease.

    D.At different times.

【3】Which of the following may Professor Neeley agree with?

A.Face-time culture is part of a modern work structure.

B.Face-time culture helps monitor the advanced economy.

C.Asynchronous work fits in well with a digital economy.

D.Asynchronous work limits the technology and automation.

【4】What’s the writing purpose of this passage?

A.To persuade people to keep up with times.

B.To introduce a new work mode to people.

C.To report social effects on public choices of work.

D.To discuss the advantages and disadvantages of remote work.

  • 24、The biggest hamburger restaurant chain(连锁) in the world is McDonald’s. It started in 1955 with just one restaurant, but now has more than 20000 worldwide. There are more than 12000 McDonald’s restaurants only in the US. You can find them in 100 countries on six continents. There isn’t a McDonald’s in Antarctica, but I don’t suppose they eat hamburgers at the South Pole. When you eat at a McDonald’s restaurant you are joining the 35 million people who eat and drink at McDonald’s every day, and there are more than one million people who work there. McDonald’s has sold 100 billion hamburgers since it opened, and it sells more than 6.8 million pounds of French Fries every day.

Some people question the nutritional value of the food; some people think the fast food causes too much waste and pollution. So the fast food business gives us plenty of food for thought, as well as convenient, affordable meals.
