二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、I was born a bookworm. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t read: It was almost like breathing to me. My fictional worlds took me to all the places I needed to go and I experienced everything indirectly.

My father was in the military service when I was a child, so we moved every two years, but we insisted on going to bookshops wherever we lived. He would take me to the nearest bookshop every Saturday morning and wait patiently while I browsed (随便看看)—after all, the choosing of a new book is something that cannot be rushed. And so started my lifelong love affair with bookshops.

One day I was thinking up the setting for How to Find Love in a tiny bookshop when a feeling of calm, contentment, and excitement came over me. It was a feeling of perfect happiness. That was my light bulb moment: My book would be set in a bookshop, and I could explore what books meant to each of my characters and how they had shaped their lives.

The book isn’t just about discovering romantic love. It’s about finding the love of books: something that can sustain you throughout your life, and provide escape, entertainment, education, comfort, wonder. And, as I learned from my own father, it’s a love you can share with everyone. There is nothing more satisfying than sharing something you have read with someone else, knowing they will love it as much as you do.

But if we are to keep bookshops alive, we need to use them, and to encourage the next generation to make them a part of their life and view bookshops as a treat, a pleasure, an adventure, a gateway, so they become something we can’t live without. Thus my challenge to you, fellow readers, is to go to your local bookshops as often as possible and come out with something that might change your life.

  • 22、Four Underwater Cities You Must Visit

    Dwarka-India

Dwarka is located 70 feet under the sea near the inhabited island of Bet Dwarka. It was built sometime between 9, 000 and 12, 000 years ago and those fortunate enough to visit can witness a diverse variety of buildings in addition to a seaport and protective walls made of sandstone. Furthermore, large stone anchors indicate that overseas trade took place in Dwarka during the Age of Antiquity all the way through medieval times.

    Pavlopetri-Greece

Pavlopetri was founded around 5, 000 years ago, making it one of the oldest underwater lost cities in the world. Since it was rediscovered in 1967, archeologists and tourists alike have been fascinated by the well-preserved handicrafts. What makes Pavlopetri stick out is that it has a nearly-complete town plan, including at least 15 buildings. There is also evidence that it was once a major producer of textiles, with some of the equipment still complete!

    Antirhodos-Egypt

This ancient underwater island was rediscovered in 1996 near the Alexandria harbor. In addition to being the site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Ancient Wonders of the World that had been presumed(推测)lost forever, explorers can find a marble-floored 3rd century B. C. palace. The best thing is that the island is only a few meters under the water, which makes it easy to explore even for new divers!

    Atlit-Yam-Israel

This underwater site was discovered in 1984 off the coast of Atlit near Haifa, and is estimated to have been settled between 6, 900 and 6, 300 B. C. This location offers the clearest evidence of where humans made the transition(过渡)from hunter-gatherers to settled farmers. Dive insurance is required, so make sure you are covered when you plan your trip.

【1】What can we learn about Dwarka?

    A.It has a historical palace.

C.It has a completely preserved town.

    D.Atlit-Yam.

【3】What do visitors need to do before visiting Atlit-Yam?

  • 24、Microsoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neurone disease to communicate with others from a phone.

The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and convert them into letters, words and sentences.

For people suffering from ALS(渐冻症), also known as motor neurone disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate.

“Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor impairments are expensive, not robust under sunlight, and require frequent re-calibration (重新校对) and substantial, relatively immobile setups,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology.

“To mitigate the drawback,we created GazeSpeak, an eye-gesture communication system that runs on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, robust, portable and easy to learn.”

The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate.

The sticker shows four grids of letters, which each correspond to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence algorithm(计算程序) is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.

1Who is the smartphone app designed for?

    A. People with motor eye disease.

    B. People suffering from eye communication.

    C. People with problems in intelligence.

    D. People suffering from motor neurone disease.

2The underlined word “mitigate” in the fifth paragraph probably means ________.

    A. relieve   B. get rid of

    C. remove   D. find

    3According to the text, ________.

    A. for people suffering from ALS, eye movement is one of the best ways to communicate.

    B. a new communication system that runs on a smartphone is designed to be immobile.

    C. the speaker could use the app by pointing their smartphone at the listener.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The day when the jobs were handed out was one of the most exciting for all the children in the class. It took place during the first week of the term. On that day, every boy and girl was given a job for which they would be responsible for the rest of that school year.

As everything else, some jobs were more interesting, and the children were eager to be given one of the interesting ones. When giving them out, the teacher took into account which children had been most responsible during the previous year, and those children were usually the ones who most looked forward to this day. Among them Rita stood out. She was a kind and quiet girl; and during the previous year she had carried out the teacher’s instructions perfectly. All the children knew Rita was the favourite to be given the best job of all—to look after the class dog.

But this year there was a big surprise. Each child received one of the normal jobs, like preparing the books or the radio for the lessons, telling the time, cleaning the blackboard, and looking after one of the pets. But Rita’s job was very different. She was given a little box containing some sand and some ants. And even though the teacher insisted that they were very special ants, Rita couldn’t help feeling disappointed. Anyway, she accepted the task. Most of her classmates felt sorry for her. They sympathised with her and remarked on how unfair it was that she had been given that job. Even Rita’s father felt sorry for her, and as an act of protest, he told Rita to pay no attention to this insignificant pet. However, Rita, who liked her teacher very much, preferred to show the teacher her ability by doing something special with such an insignificant task. “I will turn this ‘little task into something great,” Rita said to herself.

    注意:

    (1)续写词数应为150左右;
